“Food tasty”
Reviewed October 5, 2013 via mobile

Can't recommend the paneer shahjani and tandoori aloo gobi highly enough, fantastic starters! The potato was not as tasty as the cauliflower (it doesn't seem to be able to soak the flavours up as well) but still worthwhile. I had the lamb bhuna as a main and it was very richly spiced but I love my curries with rich, deep flavours so this worked well for me. It might go better with rice than naan (rice always seems to dilute the flavours more than naan). Left me with an uncomfortable chapatti-putty the next day but still so worth it. Great dinner!

“The only South Indian in town, best desserts”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Indian friends stressed that this place had the best Indian desserts in town. Also it's the only restaurant in Addis that serves traditional South Indian dishes. We ordered some:

- Dosa (a large thin crepe covering savory fillings like potatoes, served with tomato garnishing sauces and coconut chutney)

- Rotti (a savory rice flour-based pancake made with onions, cilantro and cumin seeds)

- Ras malai for dessert (a light custard-like cheese dessert)

Everything was delectable and the service was very good. Lastly, if you go up and pay at the desk by the entrance, rather than ask the waiter for the bill, they will only charge service (with no receipt).

“Best Indian in Addis”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

The Jewel of India is the best Indian restaurant I went to in Addis so far. The menu is extensive and a little bit overwhelming for anyone without previous exposure to Indian food. It is good to go with at least three people and order a range of dishes, because the portions are large and the curries are really heavy. When we go with six people, we order three starters and three curries with naan and rice and you have a fair chance of finishing the food and not taking half of it home. The South Indian food is my favorite, but they hardly ever have the idli and the sauce that comes with the dosa is a little too watery. As a starter, I also recommend the paneer pakora. As most Indian restaurants, this is a great place for vegetarians, the Malai Kofta and the Spinach with chickpeas is particularly good. Although I go there often and really enjoy the food, I cannot give five stars given the appalling state of the bathrooms with smell terrible and are in desperate need of refurbishment. Finally, this is one of the few places I know serving Hakim Stout (and lassi, yay!). This place is realtively pricey (around 250 Birr with drinks if you share with people for dinner per person), but I think it is totally worth it.

This Indian restaurant is with no doubt the best Indian restaurant in Addis Ababa. They serve you everything right from Chaat to mouth watering deserts.
