I can honestly say that if this review was based on our welcome to the restaurant it would be a ZERO rating. We made reservations for 7pm and when we arrived the doors were closed at 6;45 because the restaurant does not open to 7. Fine but why not be able to wait inside??? We made the reservation for 4 people but we decided that I wanted my friend form Addis to join us. Anywhere in the world adding a fifth to a 4 is easy. Well the Owner. A class AA+ B*&#H made it sound like were trying to kill someone. I was just going to leave but I see that I was making my friend uncomfortable with this issue. They finally relented added the chair and we enjoyed a great meal. So if you follow the rules to a T it can be a great experience but ask out of the Norm forget it. The rest of the staff was great. I felt like they were trying to compensate for the owner. It would be a fantastic restaurant if she was not there. A simple course in how to treat another person is in order. or just watch the rest of the staff take care of her customers.

Ok...so we had spent 7 days in the Simien mountains and were hungry...we arrived at Castelli almost an hour late for our reservation and although we received some quizzical looks given our lack of appropriate attire and unshaven appearance we had the most fabulous meal !

We started with the antipasti, which was unbeleivable and then had a primi piatti of various pasta and risotto which we shared tapas style followed by a primi piatti where we all had some meat variation. The wine list is superb and the service was outstanding !

The food and wine is not cheap, but this is certainly the best gastronomic experience we had in Ethiopia.

At Castelli it seems if time has stand still. Classical italian atmosphere, intimate dining rooms, very good and fresh food. Price-quality is suberb. A must be if you are in Addis and would like to sense Piazza atmosphere and have a good lunch at the same time.

A few people recommended this restaurant - and we hadn't planned to have Italian food in Addis Ababa. But glad we tried it out and the most memorable meal of our short trip to Addis. The food was good, our waiter Volvo was fantastic - recommending just the right items for us and it felt like sharing a meal with him. He really made the experience for us so I'd recommend you ask to have him help you if possible. The prices are expensive but we didn't mind considering the overall experience. The food was fresh, despite opting for the buffet. The decor is white table cloth, roses-in-a-vase type of place. It certainly felt like eating at an institution, and if you've had your fill of Ethiopian food after a while, it would be a good change of style.

Food experience - nothing extraordinary - there are much better italian resto than castelli --where you can actually get a fresh food instead of a left-over from lunch!

Staff - you get greeted by an arrogant host/hostees whp sizes you up and down. There are times where they don't even take your reservation if you have a foreign names - which did happen to a couple of my colleagues (US Embassy staff) with indian names!!!

This is a very old europe type of behavior encouraged most likely by the wealthy locals and expats who dined at this "institution". DO NOT EAT HERE!!!
