“Hidden Gem!”
Reviewed May 20, 2012

This place is a classic! Located on Bole Road more or less opposite of Dembel Mall you will find really good and hearty food here. While the menu offers a whole range of dishes the specials are few authentic German dishes prepared by the Ethiopian Owner and Chef who used to live and work as a cook in Germany for many years. You can get Schnitzel "hunter style" or "Rouladen" (rolled beef) with brown sauce and a few other traditional dishes. When we came first we were sort of skeptical since German food offered outside Germany seldom meets anyone's expectations. Anyhow, this place offers hearty and well cooked food and we have not been disappointed so far. Lots of other dishes from Enjera and Pizza are also on the menu so there's something for anyone. Dishes are also very reasonably priced, service is prompt and attentive and and the place has a very pleasant, quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Fully recommended!

“Herring in a landlocked African country!”
Reviewed April 26, 2012

This is not really a 'German' restaurant, they have plenty of other things as well. But the German dishes are, as far as tested, very spot on. And while beef is easy to obtain here, and the roulades were fantastic (the gravy it comes in was to die for), I was most surprised to see herring in a cream sauce with onions and sliced apple! A very northern German dish.

I have no idea how the chef lady gets her hands on herring, but this dish was very very tasty. And afterwards we all shared a double portion of Kaiserschmarn. Also great.

Yes, this place is not the easiest to find ... just have a driver call the place before (and maybe you even want to order before, as our order took about 90 minutes) but it is very worth finding.

“German Cooking in Addis Ababa”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

I read the review for African Queen's Restaurant and was pleased to see a German restaurant in Addis. We tried going with friends, but no one could tell us where it was. We ended up near the airport at a bar, a rather seedy looking place called Aftica Queen. We went somewhere else.
The second time we went, I had the front desk at our quest house call them. Even then, it took a while with our trusty taxi driver, Tsegaye, to find it. Please note that when Ethiopians say "in front of" they mean across the stret from. That said, the sunshine chicken place was also very small and easily missed.
It's on the right side of Bole Road as you head for Meskel Square. After you pass the big sign for Zebra Grill, look for it on your right within the next few blocks. The front does not say it's a German restaurant. The fron is African Queen's burgers. But just walk through and this restaurant is in the back.
My wife had leber knoedel soup and it was just like Germany! The kreplach soup had large kreplach filled with the same filling as my wife's dish. Also very good.
The rouladen I had weree just like Germany, but the meat was still rather tough. That's the way Ethiopiian beef is, almost always. The stroganoff my wife had was also very good and the meat was somewhat more tender.
If you like German food, go to the Afican Queen's. It's worth finding!

“A Ethiopian cook with german backround has the best food...”
Reviewed March 17, 2011

The African Queen is a nice and small restaurant in Addis Ababa, close to the investment office.
You can have traditional Ethiopian food all things you like and because the owner of the restaurant has lived in Germany for some years - she knows the German language and the good food from Germany.
It is a nice and small place and most times she is booked out because everybody likes the place. So if you need place for more people you should make a reservation.
It is perfect for dinner for two people, groups and friends or a big birthday party. Good luck.
