“Very central location!”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

We stayed at Ras Hotel twice. The first time our twin room smelled like sewer and wasn't clean very well but the second time we got a twin room that was clean and didn't smell at all. There seem to beo different kinds of rooms on the second floor (Nelson Mandela floor): renovated and not renovated. The better (renovated?) rooms seem to be located at the beginning of the second floor hallway, where as less nicer rooms seem to be at the end of the hallway. Would recommend to see the room first. Service (both in hotel and restaurant) is very good and professional. Decor in the hotel takes you back to the 60s!

We spent even nights in the Ras Hotel. The rooms are clean, the bathrooms have hot water and although it can be noisy, we spent time only to sleep. The National Restaurant has very nice traditional food. Generally the staff are very friendly. Laundry is very cheap and quick to be returned.

The biggest asset is the presence of the Abeba Tour Agency, who organised our trips very professionally and with care. The price of the accommodation and the trips very reasonable.

Room Tip: Select the rooms furthest from the reception. We stayed in room 132 and we had peace although the ho...

We had hoped to upgrade but were a tad disappointed. The room was fairly clean, and it was quiet since it was in the back. The food is ok, but there's better in other traditional restuarants. The location for shopping is excellent, however, being a block from Churchill St. It's next door to the Lion of Sheba monument as well.

Negative points:

- Ras Hotel is actually quite expensive for Addis Ababa 35 dollars for a double room. The room are outdated on the first floor. Second floor, they have been redone recently and are nicer.
- Upstairs, the hotel hosts celebrations, weddings or birthdays and it can be noisy until 23h.
- Too many comings and goings without security

Positive points:
- The restaurant is quite good for the value. It is more western food than typical Ethiopian food. For that, you should go upstairs at the National restaurant but it was always empty when we were there, no locals eat there.
- Really good Wifi internet connection for good price but just in he lobby. You can ask the employee to activate it until midnight.
- The hotel is on a main road near Churchill avenue. You have Ethiopian Airline, ATMs, and restaurants nearby.
- The rooms have good size

Room Tip: Ask for the redone bedrooms on the second floor.

I stayed here for eight nights, in the rooms on the ground floor, which have yet to be re-vamped. Yes, they are tired and in need of renovation, but for 306 biir ($17) they represent very good value. The cold water shower was actually reasonably warm.
I doubt that a cheaper hotel exists in Addis, which also offers breakfast included and has a reasonable restaurant.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, but the restaurant adds 10% service charge plus 15% tax, making the final bill very different from the prices on the menu.
There is internet / wireless access available in the lobby for 24 birr per hour.
Overall, a good choice, fairly central with a few other eateries nearby.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are cheap and tired, upper floors twice the price, but much newer. You decide.

This is by no means a wonderful hotel BUT for the price, it's probably the best there is! I stayed here a total of 3 nights after checking out of the unfortunate National Hotel and was very pleased with my decision.

Rate was 587 birr (about $32), so it was the cheapest place I stayed in Addis but one of my favorites. Here is why.

-Location. Loved this central location, by the post office and by the Ethiopian Airline office, 10 minute walk to Meskel square or to Churchill Ave. shopping, right by a supermarket, and a short minibus ride to Piazza.
-Atmosphere. This place had a great vibe. A good mix of foreigners and locals. Unlike, say, the Radisson, it felt like I was in Ethiopia. Awesome outdoor space in front with restaurant, for dining or just people watching.
-Wood flooring in room. This was a refreshing change from the norm.
-Clean small room was well designed and had just about everything I needed. Okay, a hook or bar for a towel in the bathroom is lacking, but that's the only thing I can think of.
-Quiet! Except for some occasional bark-offs by the neighborhood dogs, this was a surprisingly quiet spot.
-Shower and toilet are two separate rooms. Shower worked every time. Water goes everywhere, but it's a small nuisance, and luckily it's confined to the separate room.
-Cheap massages. I got a $7 massage. It wasn't the best, and was only 35 minutes instead of the 45 advertised, but still pretty good deal!
-Luggage storage was available and secure.
-Internet cafe in the lobby. About 24 birr per hour ($1.30).

I stayed at maybe 12 places in various parts of the country and this was one of my favorites. Not super comfy but interesting and memorable.

Room Tip: I stayed in 118.

My daughter and I stayed here for two nights before heading out on our tour of Ethiopia. The room (second floor) was basic but the bathroom was remodeled with plenty of warm water. You can see the former prestige that this hotel must have once had but much of the charm seems to have faded.

We ate at both the restaurant on the second floor (traditional Ethiopian with a coffee ceremony) and on the main floor off the lobby. The food was good at both and there are nice breakfast options available. The main floor restaurant was also a good place to people-watch, as it seemed to be a common place for locals to meet and converse.

The staff was accommodating and the front desk was helpful in pointing us places and calling us cabs. All in all, the Ras Hotel met our needs with no complaints.
