“Quality in Africa at a price - as usual.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

Same old story. A lovely hotel but at significant cost. Always the way in Africa.

Checked in for an overnight stay in June 2012 with a colleague.

Taxi dropped us at the gate where we were shuttled to reception by a golf cart. Into reception, through a metal detector and security, and to reception.

Check in was extremely slow, and it appeared to me that our reservation had been misplaced. I suspected this as my colleague and I looked very scruffy and therefore like a couple of paupers. One flash of the company Amex card and the reservation appeared faster than Walt Flannigan's dog.

Reception, staff and rooms are all impeccably presented. Decorated to a high standard, and if trip advisor is to be believed, your only really choice in Djibouti.

Ate a quite expensive all you can eat lunch at the on site restaurant that was very nice actually.

Spent the afternoon with a couple of drinks by the pool, which was again lovely and spotless.

There was very few negative points about Kempinski. The hotel appeared to cater for higher level military officials and soldiers and businessmen, so was very much geared up for service.

The only issues I would mention are the high price of the rooms, drinks, meals, everything... The rooms also come with an amazingly annoying fire alarm which emits a periodic strobe effect to show it's working. Very annoying when you're trying to sleep. Internet was only available in the lobby and my room had no wireless signal.

Finally, after an afternoon by the pool and a wander into town, I returned to find the maid had been in my room, turned the welcome channel back on the TV, arranged some slippers by the bed and turned down the duvet for my return. Some people might like this, to me it was just plain freaky. Felt like I was constantly under surveillance.

This is proof that Nigerian hoteliers can learn a thing or two from Kempinski Djibouti. They have exactly the same challanges as hotels in Nigeria, but they still built an excellent hotel with high standards in contruction and value for money. Unlike Nigerian hotels that offer high prices, bad service and poor quality construction.

Well done Kempinski this is an acheivement, open a Hotel in Lagos and you will kill the non-competition!

I travel to Djibouti frequently for work and always stay in Djibouti Palace Kempinski because it is definitely THE BEST.
The hotel is a beautiful piece of architecture, the finishes are stunning.
The apartments are quite spacious and bright with a splendid sea view especially at sunset! The beds are massive and comfy, we also have all the amenities in the kitchen.
The staff and service is beyond expectations, from the front desk to the restaurant and the housekeeping all are courteous and attentive. What really stand out here are the small details: they always put chocolate truffles and a fruit basket in the rooms. They also take good care of their guests: one of my colleagues received a cake on his birthday! : )
My favorite restaurants are
-“Bankoualé” near the beach, they serve exquisite Yemeni fish
-“Café Arta”- the pastries in this café are just irresistible!
The spa and the beach area are the perfect place to relax… they frequently organize huge beach parties ; the music is always great, everyone dances non-stop until 6 in the morning!!!!!!
I highly recommend DPK without hesitation!

Hotel is very nice to look at but sometimes the stench of the septic system was a little much. The service (except for pool staff) is very, very slow and causes frustration. Sometimes the pool was not as clean as it should have been.

Some staff were helpful and friendly, others were not helpful at all. Taking orders were a pain with some as they understood very little english, and even were confused. Front desk is a little better the service, but still lacking to help and aid as a 5 star hotel should. Eat at the italian restaurant if possible. The breakfast buffet says closes at 11, but they start taking things away at 10:30. After that theres no help or service for food. closing should be listed at 10:30. Amenities are there, but its not worth the price. They charge $60 for airport shuttle, be aware, as i was not told this when they offered the pickup service. On the way back it can be worth it if you have to stay in the airport a while, as they have a private lounge, where you get access and are comfortable, with sandwiches, wi-fi, coffee, etc.

Room Tip: If you can book ahead, theres some specials to be had online, with tours included, and rooms at disc...

We at Djibouti Palace Kempinski would like to thank you for taking time to post your comments.
The comments provided by our guests are one of our key sources for developing and improving our hotel to achieved highest level of service.

We regret to know about the unfortunate situation you faced due to miscommunication. Prompt action has been taken in this direction to avoid such kind of incidents in the future

Regarding the breakfast it is misfortunate that you had been informed that it closes at 11:00 am. As mentioned in our Hotel Services Guide provided at check in, the opening hours for our Buffet Breakfast is 06:.30 am to 10:30 am. Though if our guests would like to stay a bit longer or arrive late, we kindly inform them that preparation for the lunch will start and that they are more then welcome to stay if so wishes.

We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed our Italian restaurant Tentazioni, and also that you got the chance to enjoy our extended services at the Airport lounge (K-Lounge).

Thank you again for your comments and we look forward to welcoming you again at Djibouti Palace Kempinski.

Far and away the best hotel in Djibouti, but would rate poorly in service against 5 star hotels in any other part of the world.

Check-In: The gentleman who checked me in was unfriendly and uninformative. I had been traveling over 24 hours and arrived approximately 1 hour before the check-in time of 3 o’clock. I waited patiently and was provided a room about 30 minutes later.

Day 1: Room temp was warm. AC was not circulating well. Ate dinner at the oceanfront Bankouale Restaurant that grilled by the water – very nice. Went to the Sky Lounge for a drink after dinner with associates. A nice place, but we did have a strange reception. The young lady at the door asked us if we were staying in the hotel - we said yes and a member of my party asked if she worked there - she said she did but said nothing else to us so after an awkward silent pause we proceeded in.

Day 2: Had an early day and had to leave before the restaurant was open for breakfast. Called room service for coffee and explained I was short on time. The gentleman said he’d get me the “7 minute special” and was true to his word. No newspaper delivered - thought it was strange as I had requested it at check-in. In the afternoon I complained about the AC. Maintenance came and fixed. Used the pool and gym which were both nice and lived up to expectations of a 5 Star hotel. Used the business center to check email - connection was slow but it did work.

Day 3. No newspaper delivered. I called and was informed their printing machine was not operating correctly but would be able to deliver it later that afternoon. Went to Lac Assal restaurant for breakfast which had a beautiful buffet. Upon attempting to settle the bill was informed the breakfast was included with my room rate. That was nice, but I felt I should have been informed of this at check-in. TV was out that morning. I called for service. The person who did “TV work” was not in, but did come a couple hours later and fixed the cable promptly.

Day 4. Breakfast Excellent again. Exceptional staff service. Was able to get a newspaper at
the restaurant, but still none delivered. Received a call asking for Mr. Doug (not my name) saying it was a survey for my stay… passed as I wasn’t sure it was on the up and up.

Check-out: Was pretty seamless. I asked the friendly young lady if I could pay my incidentals in cash and charge the room to my work credit card which was no problem.

Best Part: Breakfast Buffett and the staff in the Lac Assal Restaurant

Worst Part: My welcome at reception and no free internet.

Oddity: They don’t provide hand soap for the bathroom sink.

Bottom Line: The ABSOLUTE BEST in Djibouti, but as the country develops (and they get some competition), Kempinski will need to improve.

Room Tip: Would recommend an Ocean Side View. Despite the roughness of the country, the view was quite beauti...

The service at the Kempinski was exceptional by any standard.

The problem is that everything is super inflated. A standard buffet dinner cost about $50. After two beers, you'd have spent 10,000 Djibution Francs, or $57. The taxi to the hotel was a non-air conditioned rag which cost about $20. I took the hotel's Mercedes back to the airport (20 minutes) and it cost $70. The standard room was $365 per night. You get the picture.

The bfast and service was terrific and the internet was acceptably fast....also "not included"!

The beds were incredibly comfortable and all the bathroom facilities were top notch.

Room Tip: All rooms are very quiet and it is far off the road so there are no "road noise" issues.
