AVANI Gaborone Resort & Casino
Ranked #2 of 17 Hotels in Gaborone
Reviewed January 12, 2013 via mobile

Stayed here a couple of times for business and the name of the hotel precedes the overall experience.

+ nice pool area
+ good breakfast

- air conditioning units are VERY loud.
- wifi is prepaid and no signal in the room.
- TV reception is sketchy at best.
- USB drives on tv's are disabled so you can't watch something off your hard drive.
- prearranged take away breakfast was snacks from what could of been the local cafe... And it cost P150
- service is lacking! Totally unacceptable at times.
- very cheap skate attitude, be prepared to pay extra for absolutely everything... This includes casino entrance, having visitors etc.
- coming back from work at 11pm the patio bar turned us away because they were closing, so we went to the casino bar where you can't take bags in and have to pay P20, eventually got room service to bring us a drink in the lounge and it literally took 40min to arrive.
- gym is old, hot and dated.

When I stay in a hotel I look for certain things; a comfortable bed, ability to adjust temp to my liking, quiet, a reasonably good shower. This hotel provides all of those things. Having said that, the front desk staff could be friendlier, I could do without the blast of cigarette smoke from the casino as you walk in the front door, the restaurant by the pool could be better. The breakfast buffet is pretty good. There is a shuttle to and from the airport which is necessary because its kind of out of the way. In the US, this would be a 3 star hotel

Room Tip: noted that people said pool side was noisy. had a pool side room and it was very quiet

The hotel is locate away from stores and eating establishments. There is nothing worth visiting within walking distance. Be prepared to take a taxi. The front desk hotel staff lacks customer service skills. My experience is that they do not go out of their way to assist you. The buffet restaurant also lacks customer service on behalf of the wait staff. I always had to look for a waiter/waitress in order to ask for a cup of coffee and refills every morning. This is was so annoying. The outdoor pool bar was nice and offered the best service. By the way, there isn't an iron and ironing board in the rooms. You have to request them, but have to turn them back in a soon as you're done. Housekeeping will come knocking at your door wanting them back. More lighting is needed in the rooms as well. Not my favorite place by far. Thanks.

Stay here regularly for business and for this purpose the hotel is ideally located and suites basic requirements for a business trip. As my stays are generally just a couple of nights have had no need to test out extensive services such as laundry etc. Internet services can easily be procured.

Rooms are adequate and comfortable. My only complaint would be the very old airconditioning units. In summer, air conditioning is a must yet these old units are noisy and ineffective. Bring earplugs.

The pool bar serves an excellent hamburger. There are many shopping centres and restaurants closeby, but if you want to stay in for dinner, rather go to the Mahogany's restaurant. The meat is very tasty.

Found all staff to be very friendly and helpful.

It's not the best Sun International Hotel I've stayed in, but to date have not had a bad experience at the Gabs Sun.

Room Tip: Room facing the pool with a shower.

I have stayed at the Gaborone Sun on several occasions - it is my preferred hotel in Gaborone. The rooms and pleasant and comfortable, the garden is beautiful with a lovely swimming pool. The Gaborone Sun is also a good conference venue with excellent meeting facilities.

Room Tip: I prefer a room on the upper level facing the garden. The reason for the upper level is so that I c...

The minimum standard for a Hotel room is a comfortable bed, decent shower and overall cleanliness. I give this one a 1.5 out of 3. Only the bed lives up to 4-star standards. The cleaning may be competent but the maintenance is not and no amount of scrubbing can get 20 years of grime off a hotel floor and furniture. The shower will only suit tiny people who don't mind clingy shower curtains and wild fluctuations in water temperature.

This is a large, low-rise complex with dark low-ceilinged public areas, decent conference facilities and gardens with a casino attached. Rooms with low numbers are close to reception but overlook the road while the newer ones in the Mopani wing are quite a walk through the bar, around the pool and across the lawn.

My room had a pleasant view over the golf course. I was luckier than my colleagues who faced the pool where there was a function on till the small hours. The food was nice and staff generally friendly and helpful.

This will remain the corporate venue of choice only until another major chain finally puts up some competition in the country.
