Having visited many hotels in Africa this was a poor experience. There is a casino attached but u have to pay to go in and it's part of the lobby! Staff were the highpoint but the low points were the pool area which smelt of sewage and the food...oh dear....lunch by the pool was awful and horrid quality....dinner had to be in the main restaurant as the fine dining was shut and was again very very average. Will not stay there again.

I stayed at the Gaborone (pronounced Hab-or-own-eh!) Sun Hotel from 1st to 5th April 2012 for a business trip.

I would first of all like to commend the booking staff (especially a lovely lady called Pearl) for their attitude and efficiency over the phone whilst I was making my booking. Pearl was friendly, confident, professional and funny as hell! We brought her some chocolates from the UK as a thank you.

I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel runs a complimentary bus service from the airport and meets every flight into Gaborone. It only takes about 15 minutes to get to the GSH and the staff were again very friendly and helpful. Check-in was absolutely fine and the hotel was much better than I expected from some of the reviews on here. It was clean, modern and seemed to run efficiently.

I was given a room in the suites in the garden facing the lake (I think Makaluri or similar name) so can’t comment on other rooms, but mine was fine, spacious and better than most business hotels in other African countries I have visited. The TV was small, but I hardly used it and there were plenty of UK-style plugs sockets for charging up electrical items. The showers had great pressure and the toiletries were fine. My room was clean and well kept and had access through French doors to the rear garden which was nice.

The pool in clean and well maintained and gets most of the day’s sun if you want to sunbathe. The food in the restaurants is all very heavy – meat and carbs based fare you find all over Africa, but was cooked well and took no time to prepare. Everything comes with fries! The breakfast was substantial and always of good quality and the buffet dinner likewise. The pool bar has a friendly atmosphere and has live music most nights (a guy with a guitar and keyboard).

The hotel is in a good location (although it doesn’t take long to get anywhere in Gaborone) and there are plenty of local taxis that you can book either immediately or in advance outside. Check-out was equally efficient and hassle free. I didn’t go into the casino so can’t comment on that.

Pros: good location, GREAT staff, nice bar, decent rooms, price (try to haggle), nice pool area

Cons: limited international food, expensive internet

The Gaborone Sun hotel includes a casino, but if like me you were there for business, its fine - the sleeping rooms are well away from the casino. The hotel features a decent buffet breakfast and a pool bar/restaurant. The rooms haven't been updated for decades and it shows, but they are reasonably clean. Internet is paid but not particularly expensive. Staff are friendly and tried to help (for example when I arrived early they quickly sorted out a room for an early check in).

Stayed here in Feb 2012. Very clean and updated rooms. Beautiful garden with a pool. Tennis, squash and gym, all very nice and clean. Very friendly staff all over, we miss you Herold! Breakfast is great! Buffet dinner was awesome!!! Pool bar is also great and friendly. Cool and relaxing atmosphere, nice place to draw back from the hustle and bustle in the city. Going to Gabs? - Don´t hesitate, visit the Sun!

Room Tip: Facing the garden, NOT the parking area

This is a good enough and comfortable hotel that is centrally situated in Gaborone. A convenient shuttle service is available between the hotel and airport, and reception service is efficient, although slow when busy. The casino entrance in the lobby does however add a seedy aura to arrival and is not helped by the smell of cigarette smoke. We stayed in the Mopani Wing which is modern with rooms that are well furnished and very spacious. The water temperature was on the low side for bathing and air con necessary but noisy. The internet worked well, although it is time for African four star plus hotels to include this as a free service to guests in line with upmarket hotels globally. The buffet is standard fare, but the food is overall good, although the cheese and some of the other offerings are dry and unappealing. Meals at gazebo bar offer good value.

Having know this hotel for thirty years when it was the Holiday Inn, it certainly has had its ups and downs.
From previous visits the two double/queen beds have all gone. The new format is most definitely business, not family, orientated.
This hotel rooms are tired,( the safe did not work, the air conditioning unit was extremely noisy, the arm was broken on the accent wicker chair, the TV is a 19" old tube TV, the control had the back plate missing, the grout in bathroom had black mould etc).
The breakfast at US$20 per head was the most expensive experienced on this extended visit to Africa, and was far from the best.

Service was very slow.
A group of 12 waited for food for two hours ( 1.15 to 3.30pm, which ended in complementary meals to diffuse the situation).
The wait at the front desk really is so long it really requires chairs to be provided in the area.

The security is very challenging ( I was stopped while carrying food I had not finished from a restaurant and told I could not take it to my room, the security and the casino stepped right in front of me face to face without saying anything, not asking if I was a guest or other.)
This hotel now has many negatives, and I was very disappointed as I have known it as a top quality hotel in the past.

It remains well located , the reason for a higher occupancy, but standards have slipped in many areas, from catering, to room maintenance, to staff traning. It has slipped from 5 star quality to in my mind barely 3. Sad.

This hotel at first glance was not great. The hotel is old but is well kept. The rooms were really clean and the bed was very comfortable. The food was good, the menu was limited but everything I tried was very good. The " Posh Fish and Chips " was outstanding. The staff were very friendly and always had a smile to greet you no matter the time of day or night.

Room Tip: Pool side has a better view
