“Once the best in Luanda, but now weary and still expensive”
Reviewed June 4, 2012

This review is based on several stays at the Alvalade. The Alvalade was once the best hotel in Luanda, but other newer hotels have robbed its business. All air crews used to stay at the Alvalade, but most have now moved to the Talatona closer to the airport. Check in can be an ordeal, as staff speaks only Portuguese and credit cards are a mystery. Maintenance & cleanliness can be an issue as some rooms smell moldy. Air conditioning doesn’t always work. Beds are rock-hard, pillows are flat and sheets can be scratchy. Hot water is usually an issue in the morning. Cable TV has limited non-Portuguese stations and is sometimes out of service. For dinner, the only option is a $75 buffet. On the plus side, the breakfast buffet is excellent and the hotel is safe and in a good area of Luanda. On weekends, the Alvalade often hosts weddings & other gatherings so can be quite noisy. It can take 45 minutes to reach the Alvalade from the airport in morning rush hour traffic, a distance of only a few miles (hotel is visible from the airport). There are newer options in Luanda, so shop around. For what you will be paying, you can find better.

Dear Guest,
We would like to thank you for your time in sharing your experience in Alvalade. Regarding our front office team, I can assure that all of them speak English, however some of them speak only the basics. We have changed our linens recently, as well as the pillows (we have now bigger and more comfortable pillows). We have a list of 30 channels, 20 of them are on a foreigner language (examples: BBC news, TVE, France24, Russian and Chinese Channels). Besides our restaurant you can also taste our sandwiches and salads of our Bar, which is open 24 hours, as well as our room service. Nowadays the traffic is not that intense and Alvalade is the closest Hotel from the airport. We expect your visit shortly and we are available to send our rates in order to compare with other options in Luanda.
Best regards,
Diogo marques

On my African travels yet again - this time due to delays with my passport / visa and flights my company put me over night at the Alvalade.
Don't get me wrong the hotel is pricey from everything from the rooms to a small bottle of water ( 4 dollars ) the hotel is well presented the rooms are big and clean and well looked after.
The staff are very courteous and helpfull , the breakfast buffet is plentifully and there is a excellent selection of food choices to tuck into .
There is a decent size gym , a pool and sun lounges over looking Luanda , Wifi is thru out the hotel . The Alvalade would fit in well in any of the world capital but you have to pinch yourself to believe it is in Luanda , the hotel is well worth every one of its 4 stars I took some photos from outside the hotel and the reality of high standard and poor poverty was evident everywhere.
The locals can be very nice but be carefull at night time there are too many dark areas / alleyways , remember you are in Luanda so use your common sense when you go out .
Enjoy and Obrigardo .

Room Tip: Change your money into Kwansa you get better value for money as the hotels exchange rates are high.

This is the third time I have stayed in the Alvalade, and do not see any progress with respect to the reception.
The hotel itself is good, the rooms are excellent, there is always (fast) internet, good breakfast, in a safe neighbourhood.
However, disadvantages mentioned earlier still persist: Angola is expensive, and the Alvalade is not an exception. The rooms are very expensive compared to other hotels (USD 420 to start with). It is difficult to check in and out at the reception. (take your time!!!) I think that this is related to the hotel's room management system, and the fact that not all reception staff are well versed in English.
Another issue is the fact that it is difficult to make a reservation, and to have the hotel keeping it, or that the hotel does not have an airport shuttle.

Compared to others in Luanda this hotel is in my opinion the best you can get

I have stayed at the Alvalade many times, often for 4 to 5 weeks at a time. The rooms are comfortable, and have the amenities which are on a par with similar hotels in Europe.

Air conditioning was effective, TV was adequate, free WiFi is provided but quality of connection was dependant on how far your room was from the router and the time of day. It was often easier to take my laptop to the bar or lounge areas.

Buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner was available, as was an a la carte menu. Food choice and quality was adequate for an hotel in an expensive third world country recovering from decades of civil war.

Leisure facilities were very basic. Local beers were of average price but imported alcoholic drinks were expensive. Laundry service was efficient.

Hotel security, on a whole was good, however, I witnessed 2 occasions when colleagues were victims of burglary and on another occasion a colleague was robbed at gunpoint in the street 50 metres from the hotel entrance.

Staff response to complaints or when resolving problems was often slow or inefficient.

If required to visit Luanda again, I would not hesitate to stay at the Alvalade again. After all Luanda is a third world capital city, in a country which is rapidly developing following the end of a 27 year internal war.

Stayed at the hotel for one night. Close proximity to airport was a plus. Early start and flight the next morning. The feel of the place is more like a gentlemans club, dark and deep woodwork, etc. Tropico has a better feel about it although same hotel chain. Breakfast good, rooms good, no complaints but would rather stay at tropico. More going on around the place.

The hotel accommodation is of a high standard, but is let down by the poor service and food, and expensive...albeit all Angolan Hotels and Restaurants are expensive.

Positive - close to Airport, particularly as the traffic in Luanda is very bad.

This was the third time i had stayed at this hotel and had decided to give it the benefit of the doubt but after three visits, heres a summary. Hotel reception make it more difficult than it should be and although try hard, just not up to stand for a 4 star. Hotel rooms are nice enough but basic and its nice that you get 2 mini-bottles of water each day. The resturant is good, food buffett is average but overly expensive and do not order the wine, average quality and really expensive.
There is a lot of noise from the corridor either music or a repetitive beeping, if you're on the wrong side of the hotel you can get the air-con fans outside which are loud at several floor levels. Room service is awful and even basic items can take 30 minutes+ a meal can take an hour usually. Breakfast delivery to the room was always late with the excuse that i didn't like toast so they had to wait to make changes although i don't know what they were or why i don't like toast anymore!
The gym is very basic and doesn't have working air-con so gets too hot for a full work out. The pool is really small and not worth anymore comment. The staff typically are nice enough but are more efficient at making sure every charge goes on your bill than effective service.
In summary, its not the worst hotel i've been to but minimise any expectations you would expect from a 4 star.
