I do know in wich city some of the people of other reviews were. I walked a lot in Luanda, nobody bother me, I carry a photo camera and a small backpac, of course you must be caution but it is not a terrible place to be. The bay of Luanda is just beautiful and the beach a few miles south is funtastic. The hotel is also great, good service, good food, good staff.

I had heard that the Tropico was the best in Luanda and a 4 star property. It is but it is not a Western 4 star.

Though the reception staff are overworked--the hotel is very busy with many companies taking block bookings throughout the year to accomodate staff--they try hard as do the rest of the staff.

Security is good and the hotel is quiet even though on a main street in the heart of town, however, the atmosphere of the dark marble lobby and somewhat drab, shabby rooms and small 1970s motel style bathrooms leaves something to be desired.

There is a TV, but no radio or Internet but then this is West Africa. The Tropico is one of the few places in the country which will take credit cards. There is a healthclub-- which is one of the best in the country-- but not that exciting. Still, many expats exercise here and so the hotel is busy with folks having a drink around the pool after work and exercise. (The swimming pool is outdoor and more of a toddler pool. ) There are grass tennis courts.

My office was a two minute walk from the hotel but we weren't allowed to walk the distance as you are in danger of being mugged. (If you must walk, remove all jewellery, your wallet, phones, sunglasses etc.--note that some muggers get mad if you have nothing and punch people in frustration.) Traffic is dreadful in Luanda--it took more than 20 minutes to drive those 2 minutes.

Luanda is VERY expensive and other than two hotels you can't use credit cards, so come with lots of cash. ($8 for orange juice; $45 for 3 kg detergent; 45 Euro for a head of broccoli which you can only buy in the private Elf-Total store.) You can readily pay in dollars at most restaurants, but supermarkets require Kwanzas (but they all have a desk where you can convert dollars into Kwanzas and their rates are usually better than the official rates). Note that it is illegal to export Kwanzas and this is sometimes checked at the airport and your Kwanzas confiscated.

Reconfirm your flight bookings at least 72 hours in advance and have proof of having done so, or your flight will be cancelled. (Flights to and from Luanda are very crowded so make your travel arrangements months in advance). Note that having a boarding pass doesn't always mean you are leaving either as the ground staff of even reputable airlines like BA routinely mistakenly double book (I'm not talking about overbooking which every airline does--but literally giving two passengers the same seats!) seats leading to very angry scenes on board the plane as some passengers need to be offloaded and found seats on non existant alternative flights. If you have a premier mileage card, this is a place where it will come in handy to make sure you aren't one of these poor souls.

I dont think anyone goes to Luanda unless they have to, but if you do wind up there for whatever reason the Hotel Tropico is probably the place to stay. Nice rooms and the food is pretty good. The front dest staff were great. I lost a suitcase on a domestic flight there, if you fly in Angola you must load your own suitcase on the plane or luggage cart after you have checked it in, otherwise its lost and gone forever.

All the luxuries of a 4* European hotel, No dressing gown, but other than that.... Staff were of great assistance in organising our business function and the whole environment was clean, safe and good value for money. The food in the hotel and on the Illa was great. Don't walk anywhere, but driving in a locked car is safe enough. (may be subject to change!)
This hotel and Luanda offered so much more than I was expecting to find in Angola.
