“Great nights sleep - but expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

Yes this hotel is expensive, but as Luanda is the most expensive city in the world....you have to expect that.
This was my first trip to Angola, and I was advised to stay here, as you hear a lot of horror stories about this Luanda.
The room was very clean and modern, and quite spacious too. The bathroom was very clean, and I experienced no problems with hot water.
I was on my own in the evenings, so I played it safe and stayed in the hotel, making use of the restaurant there. The buffet had a great choice of food, which varied each day. Be warned though, it is expensive! A 2l bottle of water was around $10, so that gives you some idea of what to expect to pay for the meal in total!!
The reception staff were very efficient, and I had no problems checking out or with payments.
Definitely staying here again in the future,

Simply the best Hotel in Luanda.
Food, service and location are extraordinary. Unfortunately they charge the parking per hour even if you are a guest . Not a good measure because it limits the time one want to be at the Hotel.
Employees from the restaurant were friendly and well trained. The Receptionist, the Portuguese gentleman was not so friendly. Arrogant one!
I had a great time in there

Nice new clean hotel, clean rooms with a reasonable room rate but poor services and overpriced restaurants, way over the already expensive city for cold meals and badly cooked pasta. Hotel Services are poorly managed, I sent shirts for pressing on an "express service" and next day nobody could find them, calling the front desk was no use and trying to speak to a responsible person was almost impossible, it seems everyone hides behind the desk and nobody can make a decision. At the end I was late for my meeting. If you plan on visiting this hotel, do not use the laundry service, bring enough clothes for your trip or ask for an iron to press them yourself; do not use the restaurants or you will be treated with an exorbitant bill for a meal you would pay $15 anywhere else outside Angola, have a driver take you to the good restaurants on the beach. If you like a good glass of wine before going to bed you are in the wrong place, wine selection in the hotel bar is poor, and service takes 20 minutes for a simple drink. Overall a 5 star hotel with a 3 star service.

Room Tip: I have been three times in this hotel, all rooms have a very good unlimited view and are super quiet...

This hotel markets itself as 5 stars but the reality is very different.

Despite being open for almost 12 months not all restaurants or leisure facilities are available.
Compared to other hotels in Luanda the rooms are an improvement but staff are very lacking in the basics, food is way below the quality of other Luanda hotels and there seems to be an acceptance that business travellers will just "put up with it" as there are few alternatives.

The restaurant staff are obsessed( to the point of having OCDs!) with removing plates when you have finished and, on most occasions before you have finished eating! They seem to think that having the correct cutlery is more important than serving food at a reasonable or safe temperature! Traveling to anywhere in West Africa requires you to be extremely diligent when dealing with food and the suggestion of lukewarm sea food being re-heated is just not acceptable.

The Italian restaurant has all the trapping of a fine venue however, waiting staff have limited or no basic English yet are expected to take food orders. There was one occasion when the main arrived seconds after the starter and they simply took the starters away despite the fact that we were still eating them??
We had to send our food back on both occasions that we ate there as it was just above fridge temperature. The restaurant manager is obviously very frustrated with the kitchen and waiting staff yet, 1 year on and nothing has improved?

The $85 buffet looks reasonable (if way overpriced) on the surface but what gives them the idea that food will remain warm when it's sitting on a serving area that is not kept anywhere near the correct or safe temperature? Compared to the Tropico buffet, this is a very poor selection and depending on the night you go there, there is either a cold starter with mains to be ordered or all the mains are laid out under a 50 watt bulb. They won't explain this to you but other guests are a valuable source of information.

The only time food was even close to being hot was when ordered from the 1st floor bar but even that was borderline on occasions. Club sandwiches are an alternative at $25 a time but don't expect much in the way of quality. The same goes for the other normal hotel bar fare of burgers etc. They don't serve any form of cold sandwich or baguettes so you really are very limited in choice as this stage.

Evenings feature a very entertaining piano player who seems to enjoy his work. A few "Les Dawson" moments add to the entertainment but it's a nice touch. Once again, simple hotel basics of staff awareness would help here. Turn off the house PA playing it's loop of 3 cds all day so the poor man can be heard above the 14th rendition of Celine Dion singing the theme to the Titanic!! Very apt of course. . . .

The pool is very good and there are enough areas outside to get some fresh air rather than stay in the hotel. Public areas are bright and there are plenty of seating areas but the bars allow smoking resulting in a low lying fog over the entire area.

Prices for everything are sky high - as they are throughout Luanda but this is, by far, the most expensive hotel yet.
The basic rooms are good, clean and the air con works but for almost $500 per night, you would expect more.

More hotels in the area should increase competition, raise standards and reduce costs but, so far, that's just not happening in Luanda. The management need to take an objective look at this hotel and consider the long term damage to the reputation of their brand and explain how on earth they were allowed to market themselves as a five star establishment?

Room Tip: HIgh floor overlooking pool is best

Negative things: they do not accept major credit cards like Amex and Diners. You can stay DAYS without internet. Maintenance is average and difficult to get someone to fix something in your room. Buffet is cold (even food supposed to be hot) and very average for the price paid (85$ for a meal + drinks!) ....Poor cable TV selection.
Positive: good sized rooms, nice gym and nice atmosphere.

It is not often that you find a place that combines the right atmosphere to do business (in style, thanks to the many world class amenities within the hotel) and to relax (thanks to the awesome spa facilities and welcoming staff). If you have been in Luanda, you know a quiet moment and peaceful surroundings would be the perfect day to finish your business day.

Rooms are really comfortable and bit luxurious. Location is perfect, offering the opportunity to walk to Sonangol's new building and many other business locations within minutes. (For the ones that are not partial to Luanda's traffic jam or as local say - engarrafamento -.

Luanda is a tough place to rate hotels. For the price you would - and should! expect much more. Service is not what you would expect from a hotel of this class in Europe or the States, but for the moment I guess this is as good as it gets in Luanda.... I still have a hard time to give it a "very good" rating and landed on 'Average"
There are a lot of positive things about this hotel, but also some negative ones:
Clean and good size room.
Good size bath room, average quality on shampoo etc
Sleeping quality is poor, very hard bed, but LOTS of pillows.
Gym very good, also with group lessons.
The steam-room had days with a very unpleasant smell of sewer, but is wonderful after a hard workout when this is not an issue.
Nice outdoor area with pool and sun-beds.
Maid service is good but does not come at regular times. Having lived there on and off for months it seems that they turn up quite early during weekends (around 9 am) while they on work-days can show up around 4 pm. Not satisfactory.
Things were stolen from our room.
We made the hotel aware of the missing items, and got the impression that they took it seriously, but then nothing happend, no feedback or information. It took them three weeks to find out and tell me they could not do anything. After asking several times they told me they could monitor every movement in and out of the room and even see details like "the pocket of the maids" and that they had been going through the security tape from the day things went missing, - but claimed to see nothing at all. I am not able to see more than one camera in the hall and that would not be able to spot what is going on in room when door is open, like they claimed to be true, and not what maids could bring out either.....
So lesson learned, a nice hotel but do use your safe for everything - then I spoke with another guest who told me he had some problems with his safe (forgot the pin code) and asked for help. The help was not a key but a simple little knife ~ very easy to open, so in case of dishonest servants I am not sure if the safe will be a safe place either....
