It's important to mention that Luanda is an astronomically expensive city. So accommodation tends to be horribly pricey and barely adequate. All this is true of the Pensao Caravela. A room there cost us $200 a night, including wireless internet and breakfast. The room was average at best and the bathroom was small and pokey. All this I could overlook, knowing Luanda is the way it is.
However, the Caravela is run by a terrifying Portuguese woman. She verbally abused her staff constantly while we were there and on one occasion we saw her hitting one of
them. Every morning we came down to breakfast to the sound of her screaming at her staff. One morning we decided to move from our regular table to avoid sitting in front of the air conditioner. There was another female guest also there having breakfast. In comes the owner and starts screaming us and the other woman for sitting at tables not assigned to us! At this point I mentioned that we were paying guests and could sit where we liked. The owner then grabbed my arm and started yelling at me. I said my piece and walked off and came back later that day to find the staff packing our bags because the owner was kicking us out! Need I say more?! It was truly a horrendous experience from start to finish and we discovered afterwards that countless complaints have been made about her but for some inexplicable reason, the organisation we were with continued to put newly arrived staff there. DO NOT STAY IN THIS GUESTHOUSE, IT WILL RUIN YOUR STAY IN WHAT IS ALREADY A STRESSFUL AND DIFFICULT CITY!!
