“Good stopover but beware of the mozzies”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We wanted to overnight at Victoria Falls before heading into the bush in Zimbabwe. The places we wanted to stay were all booked out and Lokuthula Lodges was recommended. Lokuthula is a collection of self-catering lodges in a great location just outside Victoria Falls. Two of the lodges are offered as bed and breakfast accommodation (rather than self-catering) - the breakfast being at the lovely next door Safari Lodge.
We arrived after a long overnight flight. Our lodge was fine with an open-fronted living room (close the canvas flaps when you go out because of the naughty baboons!). Warthogs and impala grazed on the lawn outside. The only downside was that because it was really meant for self-caterers there were none of the usual hotel/lodge trimmings. Not a bottle of water or mosquito coil or spray. We were there in October (hottest month) and the bedroom was very hot and dark. It had a mosquito net but that turned out to have mosquitoes rolled inside the netting and I woke up with 22 bites on my back!. Good thing I was taking my anti-malarials. Breakfast was very good and all the staff were friendly. The Lodge has a good shuttle service into town. The Falls are absolutely stunning!!!

Room Tip: Take good mosquito protection! Ask for a Lodge close to the Safari Lodge so you can get to their res...

Hello Baobab Girl

Sounds like you may even be a Zimbo-girl with a name like that? Thanks for your review of our s elf-catering Lokuthula Lodges and for rating our four star lodge next door as “lovely.” Regrettably, and please accept our apologies, your visit coincided with a sudden invasion of mozzies like the whole town has never experienced before. The menace, at that level, was short-lived as the municipality and all lodge and business owners took to a large-scale spraying spree.

Our problem on occasion is that the Lokuthula Lodges are really fresh, clean and modern and peoples’ expectations are therefore higher than they perhaps should be. In terms of cost and market positioning these are basic self-catering lodges, something we shall (and do!) stress again and again to travel agents as things like mozzie sprays, coils etc are not supplied as routine.

The place is clean, cozy and one will enjoy spending time here but for the monkeys.
Was supposed to spend a week at this facility but cut my stay short due to mosquitoes and lack of air-conditioning equipment.
Timing is extremely important because in summer the place can be unbearably hot.
Tecla the lady servicing the lodge was very helpful and sociable and made light the burden of the heat.

Hello Berry
Thanks for your review and particularly for your 4 out of 5 star rating that does us proud considering you had concerns. I truly sympathise with you regarding the heat – as the rains and humidity build up during October the heat does become fierce, particularly in this month. The November rains usually break that intolerable period.

Of course these are self-catering budget lodges and their open-plan and thatch make it impossible, from a cost and practical point of view, to install air conditioning, thus guests have to make use of the fans, which are hardly a blessing in this hot humid period. Hopefully you made good use of the mosquito nets and took other due precaution, but it is most definitely best to be in an air conditioned, but more expensive, hotel room in October and it seems that this is the decision you made after a few days. I’m sure you were relieved and contented thereafter.

We were allocated #7 lodge, and were we surprised at the coziness of the lodge! Both rooms are of a reasonable size, the bathroom was spacious bathroom as shown in other travelers' photos, the living room has several large couches, but the best part was the verandah. We went to Lokuthula just for the falls, but we ended up spending the first afternoon sitting at the verandah admiring the bushbuck, waterbuck, warthogs and babboons at the waterhole. Admittedly, closing and zipping up the canvas leading to the verandah was a bit of a pain, but hey, that's part of bush-living!

Rooms have no air-conditioning but just a ceiling fan, so can get quite stuffy at night. I don't understand why they still provide heavy duvets, or even sleep on mattresses (this weather calls for bamboo mats!). Rooms have no mosquito net on windows, so yes, you can get bitten indoors. The fridge didn't feel cold enough, but strangely when you put your foodstuffs in there long enough they get very (and properly) chilled.

Shuttle leaves every hour at :45, and drops you off either at the downtown shopping strip / supermarket, the craft market or Victoria Falls park entrance. The route then just services Victoria Falls Lodge starting from the 6:45pm shuttle. But drivers are actually quite flexible and we managed to get him to send us to VicFalls Lodge in the afternoon. I really don't see why not being in downtown is a drawback.

We also had dinner at the much-raved Boma, but found the food only so-so (lots of game steak) though the overall atmosphere was great with a lot of dancing, fortune-telling and hair-braiding (USD30 per head if you stay with the lodge). We also tried Mama Afrika in downtown, which serves authentic African food at tourist prices (USD20 per head). The shuttle driver recommended us his favourite local eatery Comfort Catering (USD3 per head!), but unfortunately we were not able to locate it.

My wife and I spent 6 days at Lokuthula - not enough time! Our lodge was wonderful - clean, inviting and very spacious with a full kitchen. It was serviced beautifully every day by, as I recall, Evans - and it was wonderful to be constantly surrounded by all the animals and birds. The two meals we had at The Boma were superb, and a lot of fun too.

The complimentary shuttle into town was a big bonus, and the meals at the nearby Safari Lodge were truly excellent. We had a wonderful time and so a big thanks to ALL the staff, who - without exception - were welcoming, flexible and very professional. Well done indeed - I highly recommend Lokuthula!

Hello Brian in Florida
Your review of our Lokuthula self-catering lodges is greatly appreciated and when you still want to stay longer after six days then that speaks volumes. When people book for a lower-cost self-catering unit they usually have visions of a scruffy backpackers lodge in mind; then on arrival they are surprised at the quality of the lodge and the natural EXPERIENCE it provides.

Canvas zip-up walls on the verandas can be daunting for some people who love their lock-and-key comfort zone, but that is part of the wonderful bush experience that you so loved. Indeed, of our 49 reviews for Lokuthula 46 have been 4 or 5 stars: Excellent or Very Good. Only one has ever rated it terrible; but they were obviously not keen to be so close to the bush!

With best regards from Victoria Falls where the summer rains are starting to roll in

Just finishing a medical mission trip with LEAP-Foundation in Harare, Zimbabwe, 7 of us came to Lokuthula for 4 days of vacation and de-programming. We were overwhelmed with joy when we entered our #20 lodge. The lodge was clean, spacious and comfortable. We stopped in town and grocery shopped so our kitchen was stocked and ready for our vacation. Each morning we raised the tarps, (basically the walls) to enjoy the visits from Wort hogs, Monkeys and other animals while we had our breakfast. Upon returning from our excursions each afternoon, our lodge was cleaned and tidy. The price was very AFORFABLE and I would stay there again!! The main lodge was within a 10 minute walk and had a beautiful pool and deck for relaxing; great food and internet access for a small fee. There is also a free shuttle that runs from the lodges to the main hotel and main hotel to Victoria Falls all day. We were 6 Americans and one Australian...LOVED THIS PLACE!! Be sure to use your bed netting..lots of mosquitos in the evening. Boma, the African experience restaurant was 5 minutes from our lodge, suggest doing it one of the first nights you arrive..very interactive and fun. There is another pool near the lodges that was very nice and clean.

Room Tip: If you are planning on going to main hotel, request a lower number lodge. We were in 20 which was on...

Hello Janet in Texas

If ever our team could stand very tall and proud it is after your marvellous review of our Lokuthula self-catering lodges. I have shared it with all of them; it means a lot when guests respond as enthusiastically as this, so we thank you very much.

It is particularly wonderful when a guest’s expectations are surpassed. Maybe because Lokuthula is so very affordable people think they may be going to something of dubious style and standards? You said it all: “We were overwhelmed with joy when we entered our room.”

You six Americans and one Aussie showed your adventurous spirit and relished the experience!

My warmest regards

We stayed two nights with our two young girls Helen and Kathryn (11 & 9) in lodge No 4. Very clean and comfortable with great views from our veranda of a new waterhole. Warthogs and banded mongoose grazing around the lodge was brilliant for a first timer in Africa. All the staff we met were friendly and very helpful. We ate at the Boma on our first night and the safari lodge the next. Both meals were excellent. Breakfast in the safari lodge the first morning was mind blowing with the views we had overlooking the main waterhole. The children loved the pool whilst we relaxed after the long journey from the UK. Shuttle service into town was available if needed so access to the falls was easy. A truly wonderful place to start our trip in Zimbabwe.

Dear Gilly and family in Cheshire

Your glowing 5-Star review of our very cost-effective self-catering units at Lokuthula has made us all proudly shine too! I have showed it to as many staff as I can and they all just beamed! Thank you for your most generous comments on all aspects, including your delight in watching the warthogs and mongooses on the lawns near your lodge. Sometimes the small animals can be just as enchanting as the elephants and lions!

Your enthusiasm as a family shines through and your statement that ours was “a truly wonderful place to stay” will do us a power of good. Conversely I really loved visiting Chester many years ago – really beautiful with great ambiance.

These self catering lodges are very clean, tastefully furnished an a lot of fun. We had a two bed room lodge which sleeps 6.

The grounds are very well maintained but still very authentic. There are Water Buck, monkeys, warthogs and more literally on your door step.

It is very close to the main attractions and the parent hotel is a minutes walk away as well as the Boma restaurant

We would definitely stay here again!

Wish I knew which country you are from?! Many thanks indeed for your 5 Star review of our self-catering Lokuthula Lodges which you rated as very clean and "a lot of fun." You mention that waterbuck, monkeys, warthogs and more literally come to your doorstep....you may be surprised to learn that on occasion elephants, buffalo and even lions have been close to the lodges! Thank you for telling the world that you would 'definitely stay here again"...though watch out for those lions when next you are enjoying a BBQ overlooking that superb vista!
