“What a memory at the Boma”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

My wife and I are from St Helena Island. We were introduced to The Boma by friends from the S&L lodge. What an excellent evening. The atmosphere was electric, no dull moments, the interactivity between host and guests were fantastic, the range of food was very reasonable and to top it off, the staff sang to every table at the end of the evening, thanking us for coming to Zimbabwe. I would be proud to have a place equivalent to the Boma on our tiny island for our tourist!!

This is for tourists and we thank The Boma for an unforgettable experience.

Thank you in faraway St Helena Islands for your wonderful 5-star review of your Boma experience. Most importantly you quickly recognised and happily acknowledged that The Boma is for tourists. That's why we created it - to offer international tourists a fun, interactive different dining experience with various touches of Africa.

You were in the right frame of mind to have fun...and we're delighted you found the experience to be so exhilarating!

“Boma - Fun, Touristy Evening”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

This was a fun evening, with an endless amount of food (some new and mysterious, but options for all types of eaters). The food was very good, and the performances entertaining.

This is a VERY touristy experience - you enter and are put in "traditional" dress, they try to sell you photos, you play drums at the end, and sing and dance along.

“A must-do experience”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Touristy as all get out, but if you embrace that aspect, you'll have a great time. Good food, nice atmosphere and interesting time. A welcome change from run-of-the-mill hotel food. (But do visit the Livingstone Room at the Vic Falls Hotel!)

Hello to you in Canada
Your review is spirited and wonderful – thank you! As you say, if you embrace the touristy aspect you’ll have a memorable and rousing night out. Victoria Falls exists purely as a tourist hub. Period! So of course we’ve created The Boma as an experience for international visitors. We don’t pretend that this is authentic Africa as if you were going into a remote and genuine village....

We try to provide a festive and different night out, especially for groups and families, so that they may enjoy a series of little snapshots of African life. And we try to bring it to life by adding a little interaction – face painting, interactive drumming, etc.

Some people sour to the buzz and the atmosphere and therefore, as you so correctly point out, they should go to the routine, run-of-the-mill hotel restaurants where they will be quieter and happier. We respect that fully...The Boma is a night of fun and if you’re not in the mood then we’re in for a roasting on Trip Advisor.

Happily, as all may see from the reviews, The Boma has received more than 200 reviews and the vast majority really love the experience and give it 4 or 5 stars. It remains – as it has done for many years – the “must do” restaurant at Victoria Falls.

“Over-rated, gimmicky”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

I visited this restaurant a dozen years ago and enjoyed it so much that I have recommended it to others based on that experience and now took my wife to see it. What a disappointment. The feeling has changed from an authentic wild game barbeque to an African sideshow for tourists. We did not care for having our faces painted and wrapped in cloths as we entered. The native shows and drumming was loud and did not feel authentic, there were lineups for food and it wasn't a busy night. While the food was average, the wild game we came for was tough and not edible and enjoyable as we experienced in other places. The lamb on the spit was the best. A bottle of water was $5 US, the meal and entertainment $50 each. We left disappointed and disillusioned. If you're traveling in a large tour group or with kids you might like this.

Hello Canada

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on your Boma experience. “A show for tourists,” you called it. Yes Sir! That’s what we set out to do! Victoria Falls exists purely as a tourist hub and so we have created a series of snapshots of African life and tried to ensure a dining experience with a difference that provides interaction, fun and ambiance.

Most other restaurants in Victoria Falls is pretty traditional and few offer entertainment or fun. We strive to be different but we acknowledge that you have to be in the right mood and set out to just enjoy yourself.

Please allow me to make an important correction and clarification. Your meal and entertainment at The Boma costs $40 per person for as much as you can eat. This may clearly be seen even at the top of this Trip Advisor page. Therefore the extra $10 is probably a coach transfer you organised for yourself and over which we have no jurisdiction.

However, I’m sorry we disappointed you, especially as we received a rave review from a fellow Canadian posted on the very same day!

“Fun place to visit, eat, drum and dance”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

Some might find this place a bit cheesy, but only those who don't like to kick back and have a good time. The food was OK (warthog steak was great - a definite must), but the atmosphere, music, service, etc. was great. I would definitely go again.
