Ilala Lodge
Ranked #6 of 16 Hotels in Victoria Falls
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 1, 2012

Ilala Lodge is old world charm and hospitality. The Falls mist view and the closeness to Victoria Falls is unrivalled. Staff are friendly and helpful. A must-do is Victoria Falls, Walk With The Lions, Boma Restaurant, Sunset Cruise (book early for Ra-Ikane cruise), Helicopter Flights, River Rafting, River Boarding, and for the Adrenalin Junkie .... Bungy and Bridge or Gorge Swings. All in all .... a wonderful stay, Thankyou to everyone!

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room, we had Room 33 which was very good. We could see the mist off the falls...

Well located and the staff were very friendly. We got laundry done at a very reasonable price. We paid $5 each for wifi access cards which did not work as their internet access was down, and there are only two rooms with double beds in the lodge, so their solution was simply to push the beds together (with separate linen still). All rooms are down a steep staircase (but staff most willing to help with luggage). The food was great, and the restaurant ambience absolutely divine!

Room Tip: If you want a double bed, suggest you reserve this at the time that you make the booking.

We spent 2 nights at the Ilala Lodge at the start of a two week safari. It was excellent. The roomsare slightly old-fashioned but that is more than made up for by the location and service. The decor in the main areas was evocative of times past with old photographs and prints - you really felt you were in Africa and not in a bland faceless hotel that could be anywhere. The terrace outside the restaurant was brilliant - you could watch the spray from the Victoria Falls while you ate breakfast. The food was terrific - very well cooked and some very interesting dishes. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Victoria Falls.

Very fun, laid back, casual elegance, a throw back to another time. Clean comfortable room. French doors lead to garden with warthogs and antelopes roaming about. Great free internet computer in the lobby. No international outgoing phone service the 3 days we were there :(.
Good breakfast, great location.

Staff were friendly, they tried, but things went downhill from the start when (after checking in) I was told I was given the wrong room and moved to a relatively dingy lower level. The real frustration, however, occurred with the hotel management's decision to make a tiny bit of revenue by requiring $5.00 payments for limited-volume wireless internet access. This minor inconvenience turned into a major hassle when I needed to communicate with my wife (in Italy at the time) by Skype and the hotel had run out of the $5.00 cards. Desk staff tried to help, but I spent what felt like two frustrating hours to get access -- something that really should be "free" for a hotel in this price range (it was at the Victoria Falls Hotel).

Redeeming factors: Friendly, sincere staff and the warthog that walked past my bedroom window. Only in Zimbabwe.

We stayed 4 nights at Ilala to attend a wedding. The rooms were fairly basic but were clean & comfortable. The hotel had a great atmosphere and it was a great place to eat breakfast with a choice of eating inside or outside, they also made us a takeway bacon and egg sandwich one morning we were leaving early. Staff were friendly & helpful. The location was great for shopping, eating out & for walking to the entrance of the falls.

Family of 4 stayed at the lodge (2 teen age girls) and found it to be perfect for quick assess to the falls and shopping areas. I would recommend this hotel without question for quick access to activities and airport. The hotel was clean and up to date. Front desk service and restaurant food was good. I would recommend anyone traveling to the falls to bring small dollar bills, change was problematic.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms would be better if you can get one.
