“High Tea only”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

Myself and a group of friends went to the Victoria Falls hotel for high tea and were very impressed. The cakes were yummy and more than generous, not for those on a diet ! The washrooms, decor, service and pianist was also great. If you walk to the end of the gardens, the view of the bridge was beautiful. I would recommend going here for high tea and a taste of colonial British atmosphere !

The hotel has it's charm and beauty, the grounds are very pretty. But as far as the room goes, it wasn't anything special. The bathroom is suffering. The tub had a really slow drain and the bathtub and sink are chipped and scratched and the tiles were stained. The mosquito net over the bed had been patched with band aids and there were holes in the net that were not patched. The mosquitoes do come in the room through the cracks in the windows at night. The air conditioner didn't work that well, but it was good enough. The breakfast buffet was superb. The bar was slow to service us and we did order from the menu once and the food was superb. The prices were very expensive. $20.00 for an american hamburger with fries.

Victoria Falls Hotel is a grand hotel in the British Colonial tradition. It is a bit tired but that does add to its charm and comfort. Our room was large with a sitting area in addition to the bedroom. I did crawl under the desk to find outlets to charge all those devices we carry these days. The staff was pleasant and service was perfect. We enjoyed the pool, dined outdoors, toured the falls, and browsed the shops. In addition to enjoying the grandeur of the hotel and grounds, take time to see the historic photos and art. Be sure to step into the Savanna Wood shop. The creations are beautiful.
Breakfast buffet had a wide variety of choices from champagne to smoked fish to delicious breads to made to order eggs. It was nice to sit back and linger over coffee.
Victoria Falls Hotel is a perfect place to rest up and take it easy. We, along with many other guests, had just finished up a number of days on safari and did enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
Turnover is high, guests seem to come from everywhere in the world, many arrive and leave en masse depending on flight schedules. And the staff seems to take it all in stride.

Between camps in Botswana and on our way to Kruger we were faced with either Livingstone or Victoria Falls for a 3 night stopover. In the end the mystery of the Vic Falls Hotel won out and we were delighted by our choice. As a family of 6, I read all the comments on this hotel and the Royal Livingstone Hotel across the way (which I found to be horrendously expensive!) and we decided on a gourgeous front facing corner suite and adjacent room (still cheaper than the Royal Livingstone!). Bring a jacket and go eat in the formal dining room and transport yourself back to a forgotten era, jump off the bridge if you like (the two boys did!), take a bush ride on a horse along the upper Zambesi (as daughter and father did) or take the wonderfully archaic steam train across that magnificent bridge but you will need not fret as you will be fed amazingly well at this hotel. There was a little guilt at the quality and quantity on offer at breakfast but a quick trip to the local supermarket to see the $ based economy at work was an eye opener. Clearly between the hawkers and the 1% (probably the 0.01%..) there is a wide divide given the cost of food and the full shopping trolleys. Tip the staff well and remember to leave behind spare clothes and give thanks to the stubbornness to keep a historical treasure like this hotel going.

Victoria Falls Hotel has the feeling of "old British flare" and still maintains the elegance of a historical hotel from the 1900's. The high tea is very well done. The pool was refreshing and the breakfast buffet was outstanding from the Champagne to the Eggs Benedict. All of it was wonderful and the staff could not be more gracious. Lovely experience in the old British fashion.
Drinks were a bit high in price but easily overlooked. Keep your windows locked because the baboons are very smart in getting into the hotel.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Victoria Falls Hotel this September. It was like stepping back in time when the British Empire was in its prime. It is a beautiful spraling hotel with beautiful grounds, a view of the gorge and a few resident wart hogs. The rooms are stately, and continue with the colonial style. The bathrooms are big, clean and have both a large shower and tub. The bed was comfortable and at night they draw the mosquito netting, just for ambience, and place chocolates on your pillows. There is air conditioning and tv. This was a wonderful break from the bush camps we were at. You can walk across the bridge to the falls, about a 15 minute walk, or you can have the hotel arrange ground transportation and a tour of the falls. My husband and I also took the helicopter ride over the falls which was spectacular! We would highly reccommend it. Food and drink were excellent but, a little expensive. The hotel does have night time entertainment. We saw music and dance preformed by local native tribes. Two nights here was enough for a respite between safari camps. We came here to see the falls. We were not disappointed even though it was during low water season. We had heard that during the high water season it tis difficult to see the falls due to all the mist. Would recommend this hotel but, would not stay there again because the only drawing point is Vitoria Falls.

We stayed 2 nights at The Victoria Falls Hotel. When you arrive you will feel transported to another time. From the uniforms of the staff to the hangings on the wall, It feels like nothing has changed since the hotel first opened.

The service is great, and the staff are super friendly. Everyone is willing to help you out and answer any questions you may have about the hotel, the town or the history of their country. It is very convenient that they have a Wild Horizons Desk next to reception and you can book a variety of tours there. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. I highly recommend taking in an afternoon tea on the patio. It is lovely to sip tanganda tea and watch the mist of the falls rise from afar, not to mention nibble on some delicious tea sandwiches and scones.
We ate dinner at Jungle Junction and the patio restaurant and both are very good, although I give the edge to the patio.

The rooms are old and probably need some maintenance (specifically the bathrooms), but it is hard to not enjoy your stay here despite this. It is a historic hotel with a great location and if you stay here, you will leave with fond memories.

From the thundering Victoria Falls at its threshold, to the big 5 that roam freely less than 5kms away, the “Grande Dame” provides an experience like no other. Less than a ten minute walk away from the Victoria Falls Rainforest, this is one hotel that can truly claim to be unique. The Victoria Falls Hotel’s grand Edwardian architecture evokes the spirit of a bygone era. The courtyard and entrance completed in 1915, with flowering shrubs, palms and stately mango trees picturesquely reflected in the water lily ponds. The chic elegance of the marble floored reception area sets the tone for the style and sophistication synonymous with The Victoria Falls Hotel. Many a guest has marveled at the magnificent views seen from The Victoria Falls Hotel and the experience begins with the sun rising beneath the mist of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Combining old-fashioned, traditional elegance with warm and welcoming decor, the main lounge provides a perfect backdrop for relaxing with friends, whilst the Bulawayo Room offers serenity and seclusion in surroundings of exceptional comfort and luxury. There’s a well-appointed curio shop specializing in colonial memorabilia. The Palm Lounge, bright and cool, is a quiet and secluded corner in which to relax, read or write. Throughout its many corridors and alcoves, the hotel’s long and fascinating history is depicted through photographs, posters and artistic impressions, reflecting the past glories of the empire. The quaint Chapel, built in 1929, has been the venue of many weddings and The Victoria Falls Hotel remains a favourite destination for honeymooners from around the world. Echoing its glorious past, The Victoria Falls Hotel’s traditional rooms and suites are truly a 5 star experience. Style and sophistication are trademarks of the hotel’s executive suites, which are luxuriously appointed with decor being warm, inviting and rich with tradition. Later, enjoy the hotel’s legendary cocktails or a gin and tonic in Stanley’s Bar while listening to the roar of the mighty Falls. Enjoy dinner and dancing in the elegant, Edwardian Livingstone Room, with classic a la carte and table d’hote menus. Whilst the Livingstone Room reflects the century old hotel’s style of grandeur and opulence, the dress code has been slightly relaxed for the convenience of the guest and it is no longer essential for gentlemen to wear jacket and tie for dinner. A fine selection of wines and liqueurs are available to complement the chef’s wonderfully innovative creations. Cool off and enjoy the splendour of the glorious colonial swimming pool set amongst the beautiful landscaped gardens, overlooking the famous Victoria Falls Bridge with the Batoka Gorge below. Massage treatments are available in the airy gazebos located around the poolside or in the tranquility of the hotel’s gardens. The Pullman Suite and the Centenary Room are well-appointed with exquisite antique furnishing, adding a new dimension of sophistication to conferencing. Suitable for meetings of between 8 and 40 people, conference packages (including spouses’ programs) are available. The Victoria Falls are approximately 1,690 metres wide with an estimated 550 million litres of water per minute cascading over a 111 metre chasm. It must be highlighted that Zimbabwe has 16 out of the 19 prime viewing spots and is where you will find the "untamed" Victoria Falls Rainforest with its many winding pathways and trails. In 1855 David Livingstone, arguably the first European to see the awesome Falls, remarked "scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight." The Victoria Falls have been declared a World Heritage Site and enjoy special conservation status. ... more   less
