However, the food was just mediocre. Steak was tough. But a fun experience. Very formal. It was a throwback to the grand old times.

True colonial experience, absolutely nothing to say bad about this hotel at all. However it is not really for children, which suits us perfectly. Romantic for sure. Food great. Room was lovely. Took a corner room and that was superb,. Staff were very professional and friendly. Nothing was a problem . Highly recommend this hotel,

Livingstone Room – Victoria Falls Hotel

I have dined in the Livingstone Room at the Victoria Falls Hotel on a number of occasions over the years and have always savoured the experience. So on this last visit I had no hesitation in recommending it to my guests. We were not disappointed. The Livingstone Room has a very special 'feel' about it and exudes history and quality. The staff were pleasant, engaging and well groomed. We opted for the seven course menu which was accompanied by some quality wines. The food and service was excellent and in the background a pianist contributed to a wonderful atmosphere and gastronomic experience. No wonder the Livingstone Room in 2013 achieved recognition as one of the world’s top10 hotel restaurants.

When booking for the Livingstone Room, the lady at reception emphasised that the dress code was smart casual. For decades the dress code for this marvellous restaurant was jacket and tie which added to the 'specialness' of the occasion. The hotel even provided jackets and ties for those that needed them. Much to my disappointment the jacket and tie rule was relaxed last year, supposedly "...in keeping with the times...".

On this last visit to the Livingstone Room most diners made an effort to dress up smartly with some gentlemen opting to wear jackets and ties and a number of the ladies choosing to wear long dresses for the occasion. Unfortunately, despite the advance notification of dress requirements two people from different parties wearing jeans were allowed in. I am not one for too much formality but there are not many occasions nowadays when people have the opportunity to ‘dress up’ and if the Livingstone Room is to retain it’s ‘special’ status and worldwide recognition then it needs to enforce standards. The Victoria Falls Hotel has other restaurants. Bring back the jacket and tie!

This year, The Victoria Hills Hotel celebrates its 110 year anniversary and I would say that it is a must see whether you stay here or just come for a meal.

The hotel boosts of history and it is both stunning and charming. I had lunch on the terrace and enjoyed the bridge view and the lush garden.

The chicken sandwich was ok but nothing special. Service was friendly and attentive.

Nevertheless, the atmosphere and live piano music made up for it.

In spite of Zimbabwe's problems, this restaurant serves outstanding food at reasonable prices. We had the "degustation menu" with wines chosen by the somelier. There were seven courses, some small and exquisite (a scallop on a piece of black pudding), some substantial (beef wellington) and finished with coffee and petit fours. Five glasses of wine accompanied the meal, all excellent.

The peculiar thing was the dress code. Apparently it has been relaxed in recent times, but they insist, in a sexist way, that men wear "closed shoes" and a shirt with a collar. Women are not subject to any dress requirement.
