this hotel was good because it had everything we needed and the room service was great as my daughter used to order it. we went during christmas and we were surprised that they decoreted the lobby festively which was nice, it being our first christmas from home. we went to this hotel in a very large group and they gave us rooms near our family which was appreciated. the pool was average not that we used it much. the only bad thing was the key cards, they would always have to be reswiped at least once a day. also its quite a big hotel.

Room Tip: ask for the higher level rooms.

I stayed here for a conference (held in the hotel) and therefore had no choice of where to stay in Harare. I had fairly low expectations after reading reviews, most of which are pretty accurate. The lobby area is beautiful, but the rooms are very "dingy" and I agree completely with the prior reviewer who said they look like they are stuck in the 70s. Also, some rooms are definitely nicer than others, as my room was dark and depressing, while my colleague's room looked like his was updated more recently (perhaps in the 80s?). The mattress was lumpy and uncomfortable. There were only a few channels on the TV. The shower stall is tiny and old, but the bathroom is otherwise a good size. The one good point about the room itself was that it was very clean.

The service at the restaurant, however, was incredible. Everyone working there was incredibly friendly and helpful, making the overall experience quite pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for an updated room (I think the higher floors are more updated)

When in Harare, maybe there is not many choices for a hotel. Rainbow Towers gives you a good impression from outside, with nice gardens and a well kept environment. The lobby is still nice and comfortable. However, the good impression diminish when you approach the room, you start feeling like time stopped somewhere in the 70's and the rooms were not refurbished since then. Although mostly clean and big, rooms could be more comfortable. The air conditioner wasn't excellent but it worked, tv wasn't my first entertaining centre, and bathroom wasn't appropiate (I can't describe the mixed up feelings when I had to use it, even if it was clean). The swimming pool was ok and the room service was average in options (I had to change my meal 3 times as the first 2 options were not available from the menu) but good in quality. The best thing I can say from this hotel, is that staff has a genuine smile for everything they do for you, sometimes they stop you in the middle of the corridor or in the swimming pool just to chat with you. Be patient when doing your check out, as it can take more than 30 minutes, and check if the bill is yours before you pay!

Air conditioning not functioning anywhere in the hotel during my 48 hour stay, thankfully the windows in the rooms open. When i approached the management about this i was told they are out of the A/C Gas and it should be rectified the next day, once we had departed. Cold "hot" food on the breakfast buffet. No room service menus available so you must go down to the restaurant, then phone the kitchen from the restaurant to ask what they can provide. This process negates the purpose of "room" service. No hotel telephone directory in the room, so you must go downstairs to be put through to the relevant department. No clock or alarm clock. One small bottle of water per room so you must purchase your own, this is a very serious omission as Harare has suffered a cholera outbreak since 2004, do not even brush your teeth with the tap water ! No towels for the swimming pool, you must bring bath towels from your room, pool is pretty grubby and uninviting anyway. Filthy, tiny shower cubicle in room carpeted with black mould, bathroom a chocolate brown 70's relic. I have never stayed in a hotel that does not provide tissues in the bathroom. Mattress pretty much collapsed in all of my colleagues 17 rooms. Depressing, dark smoking bar or shiny, tacky lobby bar.
You can see this must have been a great hotel 25 or 30 years ago, but nothing has been updated since then. Most everything is worn out with no chance of replacement. Food is pretty awful so i limited myself to one meal a day. Two out of four elevators not working, causing long delays as the hotel is 17 levels.
On the positive side, the majority of staff are warm, polite and helpful. They are doing their best with what little tools they are given. Also a good selection of TV channels and the wifi connection was reliable. Only one power blackout in 48 hours, lasted less than a minute. I really can not recommend this hotel unless you were desperate for a roof over your head. Unfortunately i am back again later this week, i will post a new comment regarding the air conditioning if it has not been fixed.

Room Tip: Try a different hotel ?

I have just stayed 4 nights here and am really impressed with this hotel in the context of Harare. Zimbabwe is coming back up again after the low point of 2008/9 and this establishment is evidence of that. The staff are well-trained, polite and helpful. The building is impressive and modern, though in need of some refurbishment and updating. My room was spacious and well appointed with good working air-conditioning. There was no fridge, but when I asked for one it was delivered within minutes. The dining room is good by regional standards, although the buffet suffers from being a bit same-ish after a couple of days and the food is not always hot. If the hotel is quiet then breakfast is great, but when under pressure the staff seem to panic, running around like headless chickens and allowing long queues to form. The outside swimming pool area lets the side down with cracked floor-tiles and green pool water, but the sheltered area is pleasant for reading and relaxing none the same. All in all a good base in Zimbabwe for business or leisure.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the noise of the lifts (elevators). Eating in the bar is cheap and cheerfu...
