“BEST HOTEL IN AFRICA”
Reviewed April 5, 2010

Amazing service, good food. managed to hurdle zimbabwes economic crisis. Tendai from the pool bar is the most professional staff ever. This is definately Zimbabwes premier hotel.

This hotel promotes itself as a 5* establishment. However with 20 years of terrible government forcing it into decline it's a 3* at most.

I had numerous problems when staying there such as

Power gone for 4 hours (all 4 generators didn't work)
No internet for 5 days
No A/C in my room for 5 days. Engineers came over to fix it four times but it never got fixed.
Very expensive room service $3 for not good milk. $6 for a packet of cigarettes.
The business centre is also expensive and costs $6 to scan 2 sheets of paper and email them.

The staff are mindless and tend to argue with you, especially with the no collarless shirts policy in the explorer bar. This is a bit of a farce as most nights it's full of prostitutes.

I was also charged $97 for a small amount of laundry. I have no idea who does the pricing but it's not in line with a hotel that needs so much improvement.

The hotel probably the is best hotel in Harare. By international standards its probably a 3 star but that has more to do with the situation in the country than anything else.
The rooms were decent, clean but dated. The hotel was decent but a bit dated. Overall it was a comfortable stay.
However, the staff was excellent. I can say that the level of professionalism of the staff was better than most 5 star hotels in Europe or the US. They did an excellent job. "NO" was NOT in their vocabulary.
When I return to Harare, I will be staying here.

It's got all the facilities that you would expect from a Hotel of this class. Probably the best place to stay in Harare.

the hotel is dated but clean and comfortable. Don't expect a 5 star hotel when staying in a bankrupt the country. No credit card transaction, strictly cash. For the rate of US$200 per night, it is certainly not value for money. But the cost of living is ok. One good dinner in the hotel is US$20. Everything in the country is transacted in US$.

The Meikles is doing its best under diffcult circumstances. Only a little of the services had been affected by the economic difficulties, the A/C was too weak. The staff are attentive and kind (for example they arranged black market money exchanges). I don't know about occupancy rates but it now seems that it gets enough business from NGO traffic. The breakfast was quite nice and its location above the terraces overlooking the square is fantastic. Its location is very central and convenient, especially right next to Eastgate Mall. The restaurant, La Fontaine, served good food and for about USD 22 for a full course, I considered to be good value given how expensive everything else was in teh country.

Have been to the Meikles several times before and it is of course struggling with the impossibly economic situation. Thus, for local standards, it is five stars, though for European / North American Standards it is probably a three stars.
At present no credit cards other than Diners are accepted and I strongly recommend to take enough dollars with you to pay in cash. Don't forget to take lots of small dollars with you (1 dollar notes and 5 dollar notes), as you have virtually no chance of getting your change back. Of course they will try, but chance is that it'll take a day or two.
Also make sure the hotel bill is added in US Dollars and not in Zim dollars (even if done manually). When converting from Zim dollars into US, the total was some 450 US, when adding all the items on the bill in US Dollars, the total was less than 250. Reason being the exchange rate is becoming impossible to measure.
This said, prices have been constant for the last 2 years!!
Other than that the service is very good and I recommend you to stay at the Club floor, where service is somewhat closer to a four star. The bar and kitchen are well stocked (about 90%) of the menu, which is a huge improvement to previous stays.
Restaurants are ok, though I recommend to ask the concierge to advise you for better places (all in US Dollars).
Be careful of not talking too much to strangers there (other than being polite of course) and never give out your personal details to anybody! The Meikles is crawling with secret service agents (who are easy to spot though, thanks to their obvious questions), which unfortunately the hotel can't do much about.
Disappointed with the business centre who tried to charge me 5 US Dollars for one envelope (the butler at the Club charged 1 USD for 10 envelopes).
Given the country's situation, this is probably the best place to stay in Harare and 100% safe. But, don't forget that you are being monitored.
Would certainly recommend this place as the only hotel to stay in Harare.

  • Liked — The hotel offers a high quality service and accommodation.
  • Disliked — Some of the workers try to earn extra money by overcharging.
