Meikles was like my home for almost a month. The staff is very very good and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and well kept. The La Fontaine restaurant pampers you well. However, the only sore point is the limited choice in the menus of the room service. But overall a very good place to stay in Harare.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms that open up towards the Africa Unity Square. In the morning, when you would open...

Meikles hotel staff are by far in my top-ten of service-minded and friendly people. Always a greet, always a smile, from doorman, bell-captain to cleaningstaff.
The technical state of rooms is reasonable. In my room the temperature was fine, with no airconditioning noise at all. A collegue on the other side of the corridor had a freezing cold room. No possibility to change the temperature at all. A decent flatrscreen TV-set was available. Bathroom equipped with a little outdated showerhead and watertaps.
Food was of excellent quality in both Can-Can restaurant and Explorer's bar. Breakfast buffet was just good, with on the spot egg-services.

Room Tip: Parkview rooms have the nicest view obviously; But my room -859- on the other side had the best temp...

Meikles has always been the hotel of choice for business people and upper end travelers to Harare. I used to live in Zimbabwe around the year 2000, so I was kind of worried I would find the Meikles being a sorry shade of its former self. Gladly enough it wasn't. In fact, I found it as nice as ever!!!! The last decade of economic slump in the country had not taken its toll on the hotel. It had been well kept up and was indeed in the process of becoming even nicer. The rooms felt as modern and well kept as anywhere else - be it a European capital or a upper end hotel in some other major African country! Breakfast was really nice. The TV set was modern and good. And, you get a newspaper at your room every morning... Only negative thing was the fact that I had to wait 1,5 hours for the night snack I ordered...

Room Tip: They have non-smoking floors - do take advantage of it if you're a non-smoker, or the other way...

Beautiful "old world" hotel. Much of the colonial past is still evident
Such nice staff. From reception to the restaurants. Obliging, smiling and nothing was too much.
However the furnishings in the hotel and in the rooms need upgrading. Very dated!
Nice visit.
Was upgraded to a suite, when there were problems with the key to my original room on the 11th floor.. Suite was huge. Very nice upgrade and appreciated.

Room Tip: Rooms as high as possible, facing the park.

It is always nice to revisit Meikles and get recognised by some of the staff, who have been there for many years. Unfortunately it is ready for a refurb. The rooms and corridors and restaurants are all looking, feeling and in some cases, smelling rather tired.
The staff still try very hard, location is great, most things work and in general you don't feel as though you are in Zim dealing with the daily issues.
Check in was painless, the room was adequate (TV reception was terrible), bathroom was a bit grimy, hot water was OK, bed was OK, aircon was OK, etc, etc.
Breakfast was good but the bar lunch was overpriced, overcooked and overtime.
Check out was a mission - nearly 30 minutes.

I will start looking for an alternative until they spend some more money.

Room Tip: Old block away from the elevators are quietest.

The hotel is situated very conveniently in the centre of Harare and has a standard somewhat below other major business hotels in southern Africa. The style is "British Empire", but stuffed into a concrete structure and in badly need of attention. Don't come for the pool, its very small and stuffed behind walls on the roof. Breakfast and service was ok, but the convenient position for business in the centre of the city is really the only attraction.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the Africa Union Park, makes for a nice view over the city skyline.

Great location, right in the heart of Harare. But, but, but… a really dated and stuffy hotel. It’s your basic and standard business hotel but it’s in desperate need of a facelift and airing out. Halls are smelly and stuffy, rooms are ok. If you’re on a business trip, on a budget and need to be in the heart of Harare, it’s your place. If you’re with family don’t go.
