“A little oasis in the hustle and bustle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2011

Stayed here on business for five nights, and it was exactly what I needed. I was a bit apprehensive about going to Harare, having heard stories of power failures and shortages, but this was certainly not a problem. It is an old building and hotel, but everything seemed to work fine - plumbing, electricity, elevators, aircon, kitchens, and so on.

However, the staff were really amazing and incredibly helpful. There was not one occasion when somebody didn't rush up to me to help me with a bag or something. I was warmly greeted everywhere I went, and asked how is my stay. While waiting fro my driver in the mornings, the young Guest Relations lady, Joyce, always struck upo a friendly conversation and made me feel at home. One day, a smart man in a suit walked up to me an introduced himself as "Ivan." He again asked me about my stay, if I was happy with wireless internet, and so on. Then he gave me his card and I saw he was the General Manager. How often do you see the GM of most hotels oif this size out and about, mingling with guests and staff?

Breakfast and dinner? Well, my only answer is that I put on 2 kg in six days. Oh, and the views from my room on the 11th floor were just fantastic.

In all, a great hotel, which can probably do with a fresh lick of paint, but this doesn't become noticable because the staff are just wonderful.

For eight days there was no air con at the hotel....in October!
On the last day the system kicked in and blew hot air into my room for six hours...then cool air for the final four hours I stayed at the hotel. Nine days, only four hours of proper a/c. Not good.

Given the circumstances of Zimbabwe, I guess the Monomotapa is about as good as it gets...in Harare only the Bronte and Meikels are better choices. But the Bronte is too far from the city center and the Meikels is half shut down/unavailable due to renovations.

The staff at the Monomotapa is so nice and they try so hard, I feel guilty making a negative case.....but the truth is that they all need basic hospitality training.

The mattresses are overaged, the room furniture needs to be replaced, the tv's are way out of date, the tv channel selection poor, the carpets are clean but overstretched and fraying......

I must confess.....I like the place because the staff tries so hard and is so sincere in wanting to make guests feel welcome. The poor facilities and the lack of training pale in comparison to the benefit of hospitality workers acting as though your comfort is of genuine concern to them....

But Harare in summer without air con is just not acceptable.

Room Tip: 16th Floor is best

My trip took me to Harare on business, my first choice Holiday Inn was full so I was refered to Monomotapa. Staff on arrival very helpful and friendly. While checking in their was another guest complaining about the air con in the rooms and that they had been like this for five years already. Well it turned out to be true they did not work and made the room very hot the other porblem was that in the gardens down stairs there was some sort of band every evening hat played loud music so I had to keep the window closed. Becided that staff great. Location perfect.

Room Tip: Ask for the newly renovated

The Crown Plaza offers exactly what you'd expect from this prestigeous group even in Harare where the going is fairly tough and prices generally quite high, the Crown Plaza offers great service and a comfortable stay at very reasonable rates.

The rooms are ok, but the service is just not up to western (crown plaza) levels. The hotel is right in the centre of Harare, but the staff advised us NOT to visit the park next to the hotel.

The greatest advantage of this hotel is its location. It is situated in the heart of the city and can be accessible easily. The spacious and very high ceiling of the lobby gives guests lots of space to breathe. The ever smiling reception welcomes you with warmth and a chilled glass of traditional African drink.
The property is old but have a unique grandeur. The 15 floor building has more than 100 rooms facing the busy city center. Rooms are big in size and maintained well. The bed linen and toilets are kept clean with brand new towels. Few areas of improvement in the rooms are the quality of air conditioning and the very old television.
Breakfast is well spread with sufficient options of fresh juices, milk, cereals, veg and non veg. Worth mentioning is the service quality of the breakfast professionals.
I did not have lunch, but the dinner options are less. There is a french restaurant in the ground floor with very limited options. Even the room service menu is also very basic with sandwiches, grills and ice creams. The ground floor bar is impressive and has a good spread.
Guests who want to spend some time in the gym, this hotel is not for you. The hotel does not have a standard gym, though few fitness apparatus are kept haphazardly in a very small uncomfortable room beside the second floor swimming pool.
On the whole, it is a fairly good value for money for those who come to the city primarily for business and need a good sleep at the end of a tired day.

I can not rate the staff and service at this hotel any higher. It is always difficult being an international visitor in a strange town but the hotel staff made me feel extremely welcome and relaxed. The hotel was well appointed and very clean, the food was up to the standard I would have expected and also served local fare for those who wanted to be adventurous. When my plane was 16 hours late departing they could not have been more helpful in re booking me for an extra night and unexpectantly discounted the accomodation. Everyone from the Manager to the waitress took an interest to ensure my stay was warm and friendly.
