“Great place to stay!”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

We spent a few in nights here, we had a family room and stayed with our two kids. The kids enjoyed the garden, we all enjoyed the environment! Staff were great and very accommodating and helpful with requests. Great location for being close, (as you can get in a big city like harare) to shops. We used the lodges car/taxi to go on a trip, the rates were reasonable and to get to and from the airport! In summary an enjoyable trip! Would totally recommend and visit again!!!

This review is for the Small World's Fife Avenue/Ninth Street lodge, not their Avondale location.

Due to the fact that we were visiting our daughter who lived nearby, we only really had two options, The Bronte at $160 per night or the Small World at less than $50. As we were staying for a total of 9 nights, this made a significant difference. You can't compare the two for facilities but we only wanted to sleep there, not live there all day. If we were booking again we would still go back to Small World. We had the en-suite room, which was a good size, clean and pretty much bug free except for the occasional ant. The shower was quite spacious but the hot water was closer to mildly warm. At a saving of around $115 per night, we could live with that. We brought our own towels as they are not provided. If you are a light sleeper and have the en-suite room, bring an eye shade as some light spills in the room from an adjoining part of the building.

The grounds are small but nicely laid out. The swimming pool at the back is tiny and was out of action when we were there. The lounge is comfortable and there are cooking facilities, although we never tried them. The reception keeps a stock of cold drinks including beers ($2).

We went traveling for some days, on two occasions, and needed to leave luggage behind. The staff were happy to look after it for us and couldn't have been more helpful. Overall a really enjoyable stay.

Small World is one of the cheapest places to stay in Harare, with shared dorms and private rooms. There's a nice communal area (including bar). The only drawn back is the kitchen/equipment is a bit limited (although you can make do, and there is also the possibility to order food). It's well located - just down the road from Avondale, where there are supermarkets, internet cafes, restaurants, a decent DVD/clothing/souvenir market and combis to the city centre. The best thing about Small World is the resident cat - oh, and the lovely staff!

Stayed at Windhoek ensuite room. Clean, spacious but mattress is overdue for replacement. Bath towels are for higher. Bring your own water and mug for drinking. Otherwise there's a bar in-house. The airport transfers went well - US$25/trip.

We spent repeteadly 2 months in this lodge. We found it clean and well-located; in walking distance from Avondale, quite nice and relatively safe shopping centre. On the other hand, the way to city centre is longer (you can take a commuter), but there is literally nothing to see - maybe instead of Megawat Palace from street).

Shower and bathrooms are on average; the showers that belong to "inner rooms" are cleaner. Service is good and staff is quite willing. If there is a problem, you can insist on contanting boss, Mr. George (the owner and quite a nice fellow, by the way). As the receptionist seemed to be quite tired fom my 2 questions, just mentioning of Georg's name made her immediately start to be nice again.

The common kitchen is not very nice, however, it is acceptable. I recomend to take your own dish for the "public dish" is not very trustworthy. But if you are not picky, you can slightly bear it. Water is not drinkable (no matter what told a receptionist), but suitable for cooking (boiling).

The small pond near summerhause is more like a nice decoration, on the other hand it makes perfect place for insect in the evening, so don't forget long sleeves and trousers. Swimming suit is not a good choice for evening...

You can book a car as well, the price is on average (20-25 USD from lodge to airport).

In summary, I would recommend this lodge as a well-situated, friendly-priced and solid accomodation for short as well as long trips. In Harare there are many lodges, so it is good to know were to go.

Room Tip: There are "inner rooms" and "outer rooms". "Inner-one" are much better...

As a single female traveller, the atmospere of a backpackers is important to me. I found smallworld backpackers had good ambience, friendly informative staff, who could advise travellers on travels to neighboring countries, and around Zimb. The dorm room/beds were clean, and the shopping centre is only 10 mins (or less) walk away where you will find anything you need. Bit far from the city centre but it was easy to catch a Combe from the nearby shopping centre. Also has the most friendly/easy-going resident cat. Overall a very independent-backpacker friendly ambiance.
