I had two lovely meals at El Ali and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food as well as the informative, attentive owner and staff. The setting is a lovely, restful oasis in the Medina and the building has been lovingly restored with an eye to detail and tradition but with attention to modern comforts. I enjoyed the Tunisian salads appetizers, including a wonderful brik, and loved the tasty fish entree with potatoes and vegetables. All dishes were seasoned perfectly. I truly think this was the best fish I ate in Tunis.
I bought a beautiful pair of silver filigree earrings after admiring them during dinner. The well-curated selection of jewelry and crafts in the cases surrounding the dining room serve as tasteful decorations as well as tempting purchases. I will return to El Ali and encourage any visitor to the Medina to plan a meal there.

I went to this restaurant twice and with large American and Tunisian groups. The food was fantastic and the service was outstanding. If you are in Tunis, you must have lunch or dinner in this restaurant.

We thought we could have brunch there, this is what I read in internet, but it is not so: their menu offers full lunch only and you cannot have just appetizers but at least one main dish to share by 2 people. Nice waiters but food is disappointing, average quality

I was taken by a friend of the friend I was staying with in Berges du Lac for a celebration meal. The friend had read good reviews and taken tea on the terrace so thought it would a good place for an authentic Tunisian dining experience. The family have tastefully restored a very old building (I think an old extended family home). There is meticulous attention to detail throughout. The background music was soothing Tunisian instrumental. We took photos of the paintings and the jewellery, which I had thought was just for display.

The meals were very generous in size and very tasty. My choice of the lamb tagine in a white sauce with nuts was unlike anything I have ever seen but delicious. We couldn't fit in dessert.

While reading up things to do in Tunis on Tripadvisor I read another review about El Ali which mentioned buying silver jewellery there so a few days later I went back alone during the day.

There is a very helpful woman who speaks good English who explained that only 5 pieces of each design are made. There are different types of silver work done by different artisans. It is sold by weight of silver so don't expect to bargain down like the traders of cheap souvenirs. It is weighed and calculated in front of you. They take credit cards. There are earrings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces. Apparently copper work is done in the basement so if that interests you you could ask about it.

Afterwards, go upstairs and order the tea: the a la menthe avec almondes. They will make it sans sucre if you don't like it sweet. The coffee is good too. You can sit up on the terrace and enjoy the breeze, or in the elegantly furnished salon. As a woman alone I found it a very pleasant place to sit and relax. A visit to the toilet is a must too, to see the washbasin and tap.

If you are looking for quality jewellery without being hassled in the souk downstairs this is the place to visit.

A great retreat from the souk, this cafe in the heart of the medina is civilised and pretty. A varied menu including fresh fruit drinks, coffees and tea, it attracts young people who will chat for hours on the traditional seating and rooftop terrace. Well worth seeking out, very restful. Also hosts youth projects.
