We spent a night here at the end of our trip to Tunisia. It's located right next to the medina and right next to the market. Easy to find and in walking distance to the train station.

The hotel was pretty clean (undergoing renovations currently, Aug 2011) and the price was very reasonable (~€30/night for 2). No WiFi, but there's a computer in the lobby that you can use, but I think it probably costs a nominal fee.

Breakfast was minimal (bread with butter & jam, good real coffee) but okay. There's a little shop next door to buy things to eat, so no problem if arriving late/early. No soap or shampoo in the bathroom! So bring your own or buy it next door. Rooms are air conditioned, so decently comfortable even in summer. There's an inner courtyard that's nice to take drinks/smoke in and relax.

All staff were very friendly during our stay there. My only complaint is that the hotel can be a bit noisy in the morning, as the bathrooms have a ventilation window that opens into the main corridor, but even with ongoing renovations this was not a big problem.

We loved the Grand Hotel de France - it's beautiful and old-fashioned in a good way. The rooms were spartan (definitely ask for one with a view of the courtyard though) but high-ceilinged and airy, and bathrooms basic. But the courtyard was a joy, a cool leafy oasis - and the wonderful moustachioed man who makes and serves the breakfast could not be kinder or cheerier. The coffee is sublime, the pastries super-fresh and delicious, and every day we woke looking forward to our breakfast.
The tariff is unspeakably cheap - the place is amazing value. When our full-service hotel in Hammamet phoned to help us book at the Grand Hotel de France they thought there was an error in the nightly rate - that a zero was missing.
The location is perfect - quiet but only a hundred metres or so from the main entrance to the Medina. Near to an amazing patisserie, which I recommend for lunch (Ben Yedder), and to the main drag of Tunis.
I couldn't recommend it enough - long may it last.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the courtyard

I fell in love with this hotel for its beauty and elegance. The rooms are clean and bright but still retain a lot of charm and the whole place feels like it hasn't changed since the 1920's but in a good way.

Very helpful reception staff and it is located conveniently just around the corner from the old medina.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the courtyard

We began our trip in Tunisia at this hotel. The location was excellent, within easy walking distance of the Medina. The staff were really friendly and helpful.

Our triple ensuite room was really spacious and overlooked the peaceful courtyard. The very reasonable price included breakfast (hot drink and crusty roll with jam) served with a smile.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel so much we reserved the same room for our return from Sousse.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard.

An excellent location a few steps from the medina and the central Avenue Habib Bourguiba. Cost/value is excellent. I usually stay in a more upscale business hotel when I'm in Tunis, and the only things the Hotel de France doesn't give you that the one at more than twice the price does is a bathtub (though there's a shower) and television. Staff is very friendly and cooperative. But rooms vary, so try to get one with a small balcony that overlooks the charming central courtyard. Breakfast is Continental and adequate. Very good coffee.

Room Tip: Ask for one that overlooks the courtyard.

We stayed here for 4 nights, arriving on the second day of Eid al-Adha and not having booked anything. The hotel was extremely accommodating, providing us with food and water at a low cost as all the supermarkets were closed. A room was made ready for us immediately, and was spotless. Breakfast was not included (for a few extra dinars it could be eaten in the dining room downstairs), but this wasn't a problem as the hotel is located right next to a fantastic restaurant and also less than 100 metres from the Medina. Beds were comfortable and bathrooms were fine, shower was quite good and toilets were European-style. One word of warning, if your room has a little balcony over the courtyard, keep the windows closed as the trees tend to attract mosquitos which are annoying at 3am! There is a computer with internet in the lobby, which can be used for a very low fee. Upon departure, the friendly staff were happy to store bags after check-out til the evening, and even posted postcards for us. Overall a great experience, would definitely recommend and stay again!
