We booked this trip with Thomas Cook, and it is one of the best trips we've ever done. There's a lot of time in the coach (but interesting things to see along the way), and some very early starts, but well worth it for what you see in the 2 days.
We went from Sousse, stopping at El Djem amphitheatre (better than Rome), Matmata (for the Star Wars pit houses & some fabulous mountain scenery, traditional lunch in a pit house hotel), then dressing up as Bedouins and camel riding on the Sahara as the sun set. Lovely hotel in Douz, with excellent food. Early start to see the sunrise on Chott el Jerid, then a drive to Tozeur and a horse & buggy ride through the date oasis. Next into 4x4s for a drive up into the mountains, with great scenery and a visit to the Chebika oasis (amazing walk up over the mountain & back down through a Berber village), before a long drive to Kairouan (views over the huge mosque from the carpet shop).
The inevitable shopping opportunities were generally welcome breaks from the coach, and not overdone. The trip was good value at 179TD including all meals & entry fees, there was an extra charge of maybe £20 for the camel riding.
I would thoroughly recommend it.

Absolutely fabulous 2-day excursion and a not to be missed experience! The coach was comfortable and our guide was very informative. There was so many different things packed into the trip- camel ride, Roman amphitheatre, oasis visit, cave dwellings etc etc.Our trip was booked through our Thomas Cook rep at our hotel- and one word of warning- the Sahara excursion operates twice weekly- Mon/Tues and Thurs/Fri-however they do appear to differ in their content. The Thurs/Fri trip appears to include the off road driving and more of the Star Wars set. (the only child on our bus was quite upset that he missed out on these). If you are considering booking this excursion it might be wise to check with other guests in your hotel who have already been on the trip to confirm what it actually entailed, and on which days- or see if the rep can provide more precise details. All in all,it was money well spent and good value for approx. £72 each.

Oh yes, visiting Sahara in July is feeling like a turkey has in the oven! It was 0ver 50C in the shade, but as this was unique opportunity for us to visit Sahara, we had no choice! Short drive from Tozuer in Toyota Land Cruisers, then drive for few kms on the old Paris -Dakar rally route, and then suddenly sun and sand only. Amazing views from Mirage (you can climb it), then adrenaline drive (great driver we had!), then stop on the top of dunes. After that visit to Star Wars village and drive back to the hotel and swimming in the pool!

this was a 2 day trip from our hotel in Hammermet through part of the sahara and back again. We stopped off at a roman amphtheatre, and cave dwellings on the way, We saw the nomads and the different characteristics of the sahara in different locations. we had a 1 hour camel ride, stayed in a comfortable and well appointed hotel, and got up early the next morning to see the sunrise over the salt dessert, before continuing on to a 4x4 trip across the sands ( the children loved this!). we stopped at an oasis where we had a pony and carriage ride through the beautiful scenery and then continued our journey to the holy city where everyone was taken to a carpet shop (we sneaked off and went to look at the mosque which was well worth seeing). all in all it was a terrific trip. we had children with us (ages 7 to 11) and they were well looked after and really enjoyed it. The down side is 1200km in a coach, but our guide was fantastic and told us so much about the country, people, politics and geography that the time passed easily. The carpet shop is something to be missed though.

If you get a chance to visit the beautiful country of Tunisia, do not miss the opportunity to take a tour into the Sahara Desert, it is well worth it! I went; experienced the blanket of stars at night and the amazing expanse of desert during the day; rode a camel; dressed like a local; tasted local cuisine and bartered at desert town souqs. Amazing!!

It can be hard to find a good local guide, but we loved the one we found:
