The Old Slave Market and Anglican cathedral were very sobering ..our guide was very knowledgeable and made part of the experience come to life by his descriptions. Hard to imagine humans being held underground like that.
We were allowed to quickly look in the church as under repair.

This was so understated and moving, really worth visiting. The underground slave cells were shocking and the modern sculpture at the auction site moving and beautiful.

What a waste of my time and money. Firstly no one tells you it is under maintenance so there really isn't much to look at. What they have done is locked all the doors and put poor quality A3 photos outside the door of what is inside. The information boards look like they were done by the slaves themselves they are so old. They are also totally irrelevant to the east Africa trade with half the information randomly about the west African trade. Truly bizarre at the least. The statues you can see in the photos are sitting in the makings of rubbish dump with cans, papers and rubble lying at the statues feet. You would think with a $4 fee they could at least have some respect and clean up the place a little. We demanded a guide and told him not to even dare ask for a tip at the end cause if you go by yourself you will have seen everything in about 5min and wonder if there's any more. Trust me there is no more than the two room dungeon, statues in rubbish, a closed church, photos and 5th grade poster project. I suggest avoid at all cost and read about it on the internet. You will then at least walk away with something.

This will be one of the most poignant things you experience. Its doesn't take much time but is massively important to go and learn about the history and realise that this was still going on up until fairly recently.
The monuments are tastefully done and the guides are extremely knowledgeable. Its incredible to see how the slave market was run and how people were held - the depths of human depravity and clearly evident and serve as a reminder to a past so often brushed over.

Good place to visit and learn the history of slave market. The Cathedral located where the actual slave market took place. The Cathedral itself is very beautiful. I was able to see the place where all slaves were kept waiting for marketing. A small room where they had to use rest room, in front others slaves, in the same small storage place. The fee is $ 4 USA dollars. its a great place to see.
