It was our first stop in seeing hippos. There were a lot of hippos, in a very small place. Our guide was great in getting us as close as we could with our jeep.

Hippo Pool in the Serengeti is deceptive. From a distance you don't see any activity, but when you are close you see all those shapes floating around in such large numbers, you must see to believe. Occasionally you can see some on the land as tey come out to graze or they are sick and lying (as we saw one).

I spent 4 days in the Serengeti (read my review of Easy Travel) my driver/guide Omben knew very well every road of the park, and of the others parks we visited, and brought me to the pool where maybe more than a hundred hippos were lying in the mud, crawling slowly. It is a rare opportunity to watch from so close. There is a picnic area where we had lunch

December, 2013. Just returned from a fabulous 6 day safari with Ranger Safaris. We went to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Tarangiri. Expect to spend a lot of time in the safari vehicle - but boy is it worth it.

Our accommodation was in Sopa Lodges except for Lake Manyara which was a Serena Lodge. You could tell the difference between the Sopa Lodges and the Serena Lodge. The Serena was better. Having said that the Sopa lodges were comfortable and provided quality food and service.

Our driver guide was Daniel. He was a font of knowledge about the flora and the fauna - even the smaller stuff like all the birds we saw. He was a very good driver and spotter and made sure we saw everything we could see. One highlight (there were many) was when he knew that a leopard was hiding in a nearby tree because of a warning call from a monkey. So we waited, and sure it enough, it came down out of the tree after a while. Daniel was also fluent in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

I wouldn't hesitate to travel with Ranger Safari's and Daniel again.

Its hard to find on a self drive but a guide in the camp at night offered us the opportunity to follow him in the morning. Its about a 30 minute drive from the public camp sites on the serengeti & is of the pleasant off road type. On the way you will pass giraffes, lions & many of the animals of the serengeti. At the hippo pool the area is fairly safe with picnik benches & viewing areas. The viewing areas are about 20 feet away from the start of the poolso you get to hear all the grunts & farts & the chatter between these huge animals. We were there in september for the start of the rains & as you can see from photos ther were more than a hundred of them young included & some were mating.
