“Fantastic location but service could be much better.”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

The location of this hotel is amazing. It has spectacular views and around the hotel there are various animals running about – gazelle, warthogs, lizards, hyrax etc. The room was OK but the window vents were filthy and there were tears in the mosquito netting on the windows. One lunchtime we made sure we arrived early at lunch buffet to make sure we could get good seats to look at the view, however we were told the seats were all reserved for tour group. This was extremely annoying and we complained as I see no reason why all the seats should be taken by a big group as we are all spending a lot of money to stay at the lodge. Eventually we were seated by the window which I was grateful for however I did notice that even by the time we had left some of the “reserved” seats has not been used. Another annoyance was that the porter banged on our door to collect our bags at 6am when we weren’t supposed to be leaving until later. I wasn’t particularly thrilled about having to get up and answer the door when I could have had some extra sleep. Also the walls of the rooms are like paper and my husband and I had to listen to the snoring of the man next door and him clearing his throat while in the shower. It was truly disgusting.

Room Tip: Try to avoid a room next to someone with foul personal habits.

We stayed at Seronera Wildlife Lodge in July 2012. It is a very attractive hotel, built into boulders on the plain. It has a wonderful pool made to look like a rock pool with a waterfall. The views from the deck above the pool are stunning, with vistas around two sides of the lodge and over a waterhole, so you can watch hippos, herds of antelope, elephants, zebras, warthogs, monkeys and baboons all from the deck. The bar/lounge area is decorated with rock art murals and the walls are actually rocks. The food was good, but the service a bit over attentive. Musicians played traditional African music in the restaurant when we were there. At breakfast, we had a wonderful view from the restaurant of hot air balloons over the Serengeti at dawn. Little rock hyrax swarm all over the gardens and rock features.

Built into a large kopje rock this has stunning 360 degree panoramic views. An excellent base for game drives - we stayed two nights and did a morning and evening drive during which we saw an amazing range of animals. The buffet was delicious with a lot of choice. Disappointed there was no souvenir shop, as had been advertised and it was irritating that the drinks had to be paid for in cash - would have been much easier to put on credit card. We took US dollars but ended a bit worried about how much we had because every time we had drinks with meals we needed some. This was the case in all lodges we went to though. Hot water was rather limited and shower pressure was rather feeble - but then again you are in the middle of the Serengeti! Amazing setting - wildlife right outside your window!

Our tour company booked our stay here, so we didn't really have a choice. Plus, there's not too many choices in the Serengeti. This lodge was in a great location, the grounds are attractive. So, what was wrong? Well, first of all, the grounds are infested with hyraxes. They were up on the roof scratching, on the walkways pooping. After awhile, they weren't cute. The swimming pool had a weird green tinge and I wouldn't let my children swim in it. There was little to no warm water. I think the worst part is that they advertise that they have an Internet cafe, fitness room, spa, boutique. There are "rooms" for all of those, but they're EMPTY except for the fitness center which is stocked with treadmills which weren't even plugged in. The buffet was typical of large lodges; bland with recycled food choices. For the price, I can't recommend this lodge.

Built around a granite kopje, this place is an experience in itself. We used the hotel as base for safari, and its central location in Serengeti allowed a pre-breakfast safari which was our greatest few hours. We went on several expeditions, and was able to get back for the excellent food served at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The rooms are of a bit variable quality, with noisy wooden floors as the biggest problem. Go for a room on the second floor.
As sports people, we would have liked the fitness center to be open (great equipment installed but not allowed used), as well as internet working. But for only two nights, this was not a problem for us.
We brought our own mosquito nets for the beds, since our youngest had read on Tripadvisor that this was absent.

The service is great, except at the reception desk. The attention of the reception staff is not directed to the customer, but more to the social relation to some of the safari drivers; a couple of the like to hang around at the reception counter telling stories out loud.

Giraffes, pumbas and gazelles were grassing right outside our room, and we enjoyed the roaring of a male lion and grunting of hippos the first night there.

We would definitely go back to Seronera for safari, and we would stay more nights if fitness center and internet came into function and service level of receptionists was improved.

We had a 7 day safari in February 2012. Our guide, John, from Somak Tours was absolutely amazing. The knowledge he shared was fascinating. We also enjoyed his sense of humor. He truly made the whole trip incredible. Our favorite park was the Serengeti for wildlife and the accomodations. The entire lodge is constructed around large boulders. Magnificent views from the look out deck. Great pool for cooling off after long hot drives. The food is average but the atmosphere is superb. Would definitely recommend.

This was by no means a luxury property (even if the price is high!), but it was incredibly unique and impressive nonetheless. The location is amazing, and the entire hotel is constructed around rock formation in a very artistic way. My only complaint is a lack of modern amenities (no internet to be found), and that our poor guide did not even have a washroom to use, in the guide accommodations! This hotel should not that guests want their drivers to be treated like people, and a lack of a wash room is pretty sad! I would request the hotel to add this facility for their use immediately! A clean, well-rested driver is important to all guests, and is important for their own sense of dignity! Otherwise, amazing hotel, good service, good food, nice music at night, and the best views.
