We spent 4 nights at Ikoma and thought it was a great place to stay. The tents all have ensuites, are basic but very clean and the showers were hot. The staff are excellent, very friendly with a wonderful sense of humour and the Manager welcomes feedback on ways to improve. One day we opted to have a 'rest day' so no safari. It was great. We sat in the grounds surrounding the main dining area reading and watching the zebras, wilderbeest and giraffes in the distance. It does not get much better than that.

As a tented Camp this place is great. The 32 rooms are arranged in a spacious manner. Clean tents, clean attached bathrooms. Water as promised in the evening and morning (but nor during the day -you must remember it is a tented camp in the nowhere-land). Great restaurant, very lovely staff. Helpful manager. Expensive internet connection (5 USD per 30 min).
Great breakfast and good buffet dinner.
Next to an entrance gate of Serengeti.

We spent 2 nights in the Ikoma Bush Camp and both were excellent. We had no problems with electricity or water, but we were out until late afternoon both days. People were very accomodating and our server/waiter was exceptional friendly and talkative. We love the setting of sitting outside and watching the animals in the morning or sitting at the firepit and watching the lightning.

Having stayed in 3 similarly priced lodges previously during this trip,(all of which were fabulous) we were expecting Ikoma camp to live up to its advertised promises - unfortunately it failed woefully to deliver on every level.
We were due to stay for 3 nights and left after 1. We had NO hot water either the night we arrived or the next morning. My shower was a bottle of mineral water. We were assured there would be electricity both in the evening and in the early morning, while we did have electricity early evening there was nothing the next morning. The manager told us that the generator had been switched on but all seemed very quiet!
While we were trying to 'shower' before dinner it rained very heavily, while I fully realise that this was beyond the control of the lodge they were not prepared for this. There was no torch, no umbrella, no guide to the restaurant and no lights on the path, I use the word 'path' loosely. The 'path' had become a river, we waded through 4 inches of water to the restaurant which was some way from our tent and were soaked to the skin by the time we reached it. The staff did their best mopping up their guests but everyone was fairly irritated.
The food was dreadful, I'm not sure where the kitchen is in comparison to the dining area but judging by the temperature of the food I can only guess it was some distance away. The staff were very sweet and I felt doing their best in dreadful circumsances.
By the time we had crawled our way through our tepid main course we had telephoned our agent in UK and reported our findings to him. He assured us he would do what he could.
The next morning with no hot water, no electricity a very substandard breakfast and the delight of putting our own packed lunch together with foodstuff chosen from an array of things one would never want to eat, (boxed lunches from the other lodges had been much of a muchness but more than adequate) we packed our things and went to meet our guide who we had been travelling with for 4 days. He told us that his food and accommodation had been a mirror of ours and was not suprised that we wanted to leave as all the guests had contacted their guides with the same complaints as ours.
Luckily for us by lunchtime that day our agent (thanks Africa Travel Resort) had booked us into another lodge which was up to, and beyond the standard of the other lodges we had stayed at previously. I agree with the fact that most people probably only stay one night here, and put up with this very poor standard of lodge and move on swiftly.

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to review your stay at the Ikoma Tented Camp.

I take this opportunity to apologies that your stay at the Ikoma Tented Camp did not meet your expectations, we have now taken immense steps to ensure that the complaints you raised are not repeated by any other guests who stay at the camp.

In January 2011 we hired a new chef at the camp and so far all of our guests have been extremely happy with the meals as well as the lunch boxes. During the peak season months that just came to a close, we did not receive a single complaint on the meals and we now beleive that the meals are up to the standards we needed them to be.

Previously , and due to the size of the camp (32 rooms) the water was not reaching all the tents when busy as the pump was not equipped for this, however we sunk a borehole closer to the tents and installed heavy duty water pumps that ensure that all tents receive water at all times, with the pressure that is required for comfortable showers and flushing toilets.

May I also take this opportunity to point out that Ikoma Tented Camp is a basic, rustic and comfortable camp well equipped for a comfortable stay with all the basic necessities for this, but certainly not for a luxurious stay, as that is not the category that we set out to be.

We strive to accord comfortable but basic and inexpensive accomodation at the Ikoma Tented Camp to all our guests.

Sincerely,

Juliette Amon.

We stayed here for one night during our 2 week safari, and this was the only place where we felt we were in the middle of the bush. It felt really wild - at night I heard some movement and rustling next to our tent.

We did not experience any problems with water, the food quality was fine with us, and staff was the friendliest one we encountered on our trip.

During sunrise, when you step out of the tent and listen to the multitude of the sounds from the bush, you really feel that you are in Africa!

We loved the location of this place and the restaurant area is great - feels like something our of 'Out of Africa' . Rooms were also great. As with all tented lodges electricity is only available at certain times of day - the challenge here is that the water is pumped - so when there is no electricity there is also no water.

Our main issue with this location was that we felt we were constantly being hit up for extras and tips. Maybe we were just getting tired of tipping - but just be aware.
