“Enjoyable stay with amazing surroundings”
Reviewed February 13, 2011

We stayed at the Serena Safari Lodge in 2010 as part of a 6 day tour with Somak and found this lodge to be in a prime location with stunning views. The 'huts' are dotted around the grounds with lovely views. We woke to see wildlife wandering through the brush and enjoyed the open aspect of the lodge. Hyenas can be seen drinking from the pool in the evening which explains the need for security to walk you to the restaurant after the sun sets!

Our initial room had what we were told were bats living in the verandah wooden totem polls and once we showed this to the manager, David, he immediately arranged for us to move. And on top of this he made sure we enjoyed our stay by coming to speak with us each night and check the new room was acceptable - the complimentary beverage also helped! And when staying in the Serengeti visits from local wildlife should be expected. We had no concerns with mosquitos at this time of year. The room itself was clean and comfortable.

The pool looked great but we didn't get to enjoy it as we were out all day on safari. The lounge are was a perfect place to relax after a long game drive and the buffet meal was great - especially the meat bbq. We found the service to be fantastic.

A fantastic place where to stay when visiting the Serengeti. I spent 4 nights at this marvelous Safari Lodge, due to all the program I had to do in the area being able to travel daily to several places for watching and following the animal migration. There are so many sites to vist at the Serengeti.
The Serengeti Serena, has beautiful rooms built in an architecture that goes according to the environment and landscape. The service is excellent, the food is of excellent quality. A great place where to stay.

We stayed at the Serengeti Serena Lodge for 2 nights during our honeymoon in Tanzania. We booked through ATR, who we would highly recommend and gave a fair description of the hotel. The Serengeti Serena was the largest of the lodges we stayed at, and we generally favoured the smaller tented camps, which had a more authentic feel.
The accommodation is in small rondavels, which generally comprise 3 rooms, 2 smaller ground floor rooms and a larger upstairs room, which benefits from a slightly better view. We had booked a larger room. On arrival we were taken on a long walk to a small dark downstairs room, in a rondaval on the edge of the site. We returned to reception and explained this was not the room we booked. They told us we had turned up a day late, the room we had requested was not available and there were no other rooms. The management later admitted they had made an administrative error and the Serena lodge was at fault but the service we received was very poor, especially considering the hotel was aware we were on our honeymoon. We were eventually given complimentary drinks and upgraded to a large suite for our final night, but only after we complained to the manager.
The rooms themselves were clean, comfortable but a bit dated. The restaurant and bar was ok but a little bit Disney in the Serengeti. The food is distinctly average, there is a very large choice but it’s poorly cooked. The food is laid out in a buffet and was not covered so insects were crawling on the desserts. I pointed this out to the staff and they flicked them off!!!
The lodge has all the amenities you would expect from a larger hotel (internet, pool, gift shop, excursions, evening entertainment), but no authenticity and it is not much better than a travel lodge in an exceptional location. For the money I think you could do better. The hotel is very busy as it is used by the large package holiday companies.
We would definitely recommend the Serengeti but not the Serena. Having said that it was nice to break up our stay in tented camps with a stay in a lodge. We saw plenty of game in the Serengeti in August but I think if it’s within your budget it would be worth paying a bit extra to go to the Northern camps. We also stayed at Mawe Ninga, Plantation Lodge and Oldavai Camp and Pongwe Beach and Breezes Beach Club on Zanzibar.

We enjoyed our stay at the Serena and witnessed a spectacular rain storm in the distance on the plain below one evening. Due to the lodge placement high on a hill most rooms have wonderful views. Rooms are clean and adequate. Food is served buffet style and you're sure to find something to your liking. Plenty of vegetables, salads and fresh grilled meats. Any lack of food quality or service at any of the Serena Lodges will be forgotton the moment you view the animals and experience the spectacular Serengeti! The staff packed breakfast and lunch boxes (always more than we could eat) for us and our guide each morning so we could view animals at first light. Early mornings were the best time to view all the animals. And what better place to enjoy breakfast & lunch breaks than on the Serengeti Plain? Very memorable trip & experiences.

This is a great lodge with excellent food (buffet). The rooms were the best we stayed in on this trip but the only thing letting the place down was the service. The service itself was good but just felt very artificial. All the staff have obviously been very well trained to say the correct things but it often felt fake as if they were reading from a prepared statement.

We saw lots of animals in this area and heard lions at extremely close quarters in the evenings and during the night (sometimes keeping us awake).

Note that security guards are on hand to escort you from your room to the restaurant. Not sure if this is absolutely neceassary but it does make you feel safe.

We spent 3 nights at this lodge as our "base" while exploring the Serengeti.
It was very comfortable and safe, although the food got rather tiresome after a while. But we didn't expect much in the middle of the Serengeti :)
The flies were too bad to enjoy any time by the pool :(
We would definitely stay here again!

The reception is perfect, a wet towel and welcoming drink at arrival, good explanation and useful information in perfect english. Quick transfer to rooms in a wonderfull setting. Nice Serengeti beer at the pool. Dinner very well served, nice BBQ and excellent desert. Winelist well stocked wines worth their price. Guards to protect you from wild animals ( he showed us a grazing buffalo nearby). He got a bushbaby in his bundle of light.
A very pleasant two days stay.
