We were on the Sky Safari and traveled by road(!) from Migration Camp to Pioneer Camp - effectively 8 hours from the north to the south of the Serengeti..
Arrival at Pioneer was amazing - a colonial tent with WC, lounge space and a small office next to where the Land Cruiser parked and to be met by manager Lauren who had of course been expecting us. She introduced us to our butler Matthias and he took our bags to our tent.
We went to the lounge area up a few wooden stairs and to the view over the Serengeti which we just drove over. Amazing! Cool drinks and cold towels refreshed us and we had a nice chat with Lauren.
We went to our tent. Wow, what a tent! Pioneer had just recently opened and we were one couple of a total of 7 people staying.
The tent is just amazing. The walk to it is charming, alarming and fun - you will be escorted by maasi warriors at night.
The tent is colonial British empire with all the trimmings (see photos) - port decanter and glasses, Pith helmet and umbrellas, travel trunks, huge bed and bathroom in its own compartment. Couldn't have been better! Hot water by solar power - more than enough for two showers.
Our one night there started by a sit down outside altogether around the fire, cold drinks served and watch the sun go down.
Off to dinner and 3 choices on 3 courses - all of which was fantastic - how these people cook like this in the middle of nowhere....stunning. With full tummys we went back to the lounge and few more drinks - managers Ryan and Lauren recommending we come back at 0600 hours to see the sun rise.
0600 hours and the sun rise over the Serengeti is stunning - absolutely humbling and commanding respect.
Breakfast around the pool (small but perfectly formed), food excellent again.
Now in a Land Rover to the airstrip - only 6 hours drive south - lots of animals on the way!
Thank you Elly, Lauren, Ryan, Matthias and staff team.
Note: you can buy the Pith helmets from the lounge / bar! One size fits all and they are the real thing.
