“A secret that deserves sharing”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

We had two nights at Lamala Kuria Hills and it is special. Very special. The accommodation is the highest possible standard of glamping (icydk= glamorous camping). And it is worth the trip an hour on the bumpy roads from the Mara River in northern Serengeti, for it is spectacular: the attention to detail, the attention of the staff and the setting - watch the sunset sitting in sling chairs next to an open fire in an area next to the bar. There is also a lounge area, decorated as are the rooms, in gorgeous upmarket quality African artworks. The stay was the most upmarket of our trip. We are so happy that Safari Infinity found this place for us. And we found the northern Serengeti preferable to central for many reasons. We would come again in a heart beat.

This place is amazing, can't say enough good things about it. The managers and staff are fantastic, the accommodation is outstanding. Beautifully designed rooms and your own personal plunge pool. Would very highly recommend this camp.

Room Tip: there are no bad rooms

This property in the north Serengeti is the newest addition to the Lemala Camps operated in association with Grumeti Expeditiuons. It consists of 10 westward facing luxury tents some 17 km from Kogatende air strip. It sets a new standard for bush camps.

Each tent consists of two rooms, one containing a very large bed and sitting area and the other a large bathroom with both a tub and shower. Sliding glass doors lead to a large deck having seating and lounge areas, a plunge pool and an outdoor shower. The tents are exquisitely designed and tastefully decorated. Lighting and hot water are solar driven and there is free WIFI. There is a small gift shop that has good-quality items.

The camp has a chef, not a cook, and the food is very good with considerable variety. They make an effort to locally source their food. Meals are served at the table rather than buffet style. Lunches tend to be outdoors and dinners indoors. They also make nice box lunches for safari-goers.

The on-site management and staff are a treat to deal with, competent, friendly and eager to please.

And yes you will see wildlife. We saw the big five, cheetahs and a Mara River crossing on the same day. No guarantees, of course.

Room Tip: The tents are all great, but tents 1 and 10 are furthest from the central facility.

Dear SaskatoonWanderer

Thank you for your kind words and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Part of the Lemala commitment is to support the local communities where we can and we are proud to be able to support the local small town where we purchase most of our produce from the local suppliers. It is great that they can supply us with such good quality produce and we are glad you enjoyed the end result in our meals.

We are pleased that you returned home safely and we look forward to sharing this amazing environment with you again.

This was our second stop on our safari, and the comforts of the place caused us to disappoint our guide by telling him we would only do a half day drive on our second day because we just wanted to enjoy the room, deck and spa facilities. A personal plunge pool? And the bed is enormous. Really nicely designed room and view. The staff and managers were lovely to talk to. There was an intense rainstorm our first evening and we felt bad for the waitstaff trying to bring food from the kitchen tent without getting it wet. They heroically managed. The lodge is new and we enjoyed talking to the managers who are working hard to make everything come together. The bartender, Moses, was very solicitous, putting a fire on in the lounge when he saw I was cold. Jonathan, our waiter, taught my husband several new Swahili words. Highly recommended!

First, you roll in to camp in your 4-wheel drive worn to a frazzle (since the Serengeti is whole new level of extreme off-roading, prepare to get rattled to your bones, and hold on to your teeth/b***bs/eyeballs-- anything that might fall out or off). Then, as you stagger out of your vehicle, an... angel... offers you rolled-up, warm, moist cotton towels to wipe the inches of dust from your face and exposed skin. She then follows that up with tall, cold glasses of (non-alcoholic) lemon spritzers and you just transform into a Human again.

Just as I finally composed myself and assembled my parts into human form again, she invited me to avail of their spa services- massages, mani-pedi, etc. OMG, after several days in the bush/mountain (Kili), this was like the sound of hosts of angels, welcoming me.

The spa hut is a 3-walled affair-- the 4th wall is missing, and opened up to a wide vista where wildebeests and zebras just casually stroll along, and might be able to come over and clamber up for a mani-pedi should they so please. They kept their distance, of course.

The hostess/owner (?) Cornelia is very warm and welcoming, and her husband Mark is very knowledgeable and engaging as well. The rooms are very well appointed, with a very zen-like feel, (if African-zen decor makes sense). I have nothing at all negative to say about this place.

In case it was just my worn-out state that made this place appear like a piece of spa heaven, let's have these pictures do the talking.

Room Tip: I stayed in Tent 5- very close proximity to their internet tower and so you get strong wifi.

This place will definitely become the luxury go-to in the Northern Serengeti. The camp is a fairly short drive away from the Mara River, and we were able to see 6 crossings in three days of game drives, along with plenty of lions, cheetah and what have you. Despite being close to the river, the camp is in a very isolated location, which is fantastic.
The tents are unbelievable, with plenty of hot water and 24 hr electricity, outlets to charge everything, plenty of closet space, a deck with a plunge pool and a view, a bathtub with a view, and a phone to call other rooms, which came in handy as our party had two tents and wanted to coordinate meeting for breakfast, etc.
Food and service were great. Everyday we set off with a very fancy packed lunch that came in a trunk with tins and silverwear. You'll want that when you're parked next to the river on "wildebeest stakeouts." Drinks and snacks before dinner every evening was a highlight. Breakfast buffets were fantastic, and we got a few different options each night for dinner, all of which were delicious. Ask the head chef if she will make you one of her famous "Don Pedro" drinks for dessert. Our server for our whole stay, Jonathan, was very attentive and amicable. The camp managers were also very friendly and did anything and everything to make sure we enjoyed our stay.
One of the highlights was Doris, the orphaned Wildebeest calf who was sheltering around the campsite during our stay. We would pass her within about a foot everyday on our way up to the main tent, she had become very accustomed to life around the camp, clearly.
All in all, I would recommend anyone venturing up to this remote location to stay at this camp.

Room Tip: The furthest tents are a bit of a hike, it will wake you up every morning to be sure. It wasn't...

The rooms are semi permanent structures with beautiful views of the valley. There is a large veranda and an outside shower as well as one in the bathroom. The decorations are outstanding. There is plenty of hot water and electricity 24h. It can be a short walk up hill and down to each unit. The bar area is also well appointed. Standard drinks are free. The food was excellent. The staff was pleasant and helpful. We were part of a photography group. We saw leopards, lions, giraffes, wildebeest, wart hogs, antilopes, etc.

Room Tip: If you are having difficulty walking, request a room close to the main area.

Dear James V 1941

Kuria Hills is a totally new concept in lodge design with most of the components and materials coming from recycled materials and all of the electricity and hot water generated from solar power. We are really happy that you enjoyed your stay here at our green camp and hope to see you back sometime.

Best regards and safe travels.
