“Beautiful Lodge”
Reviewed February 28, 2011

We stayed at this lodge for 2 nights at the end of our 7 night safari through Northern Tanzania. It is an amazing lodge, the service, the beautiful views, the gorgeous 'tents' I can't fault it.

We stayed at Serena Lodges throughout our stay, but I can say that this was by far the best out of the lot.

Would recommend it for anybody looking for a touch of luxury to finish off their safari experience.

For an introduction let me just say that I work in the luxury business and have the opportunity to travel often in the best palaces of the world.

My wife, little daughter and I stayed there in December and will dream of this place for a long time.

The tent are splendid, the reception is decorated in a “Out of Africa” style. Dinner served with Villeroy and Boch porcelain and the staff serves the wine like pro’s.

The staff is always looking in ways to please you and extremely nice with the kids.
The view is breathtaking; we saw lions, elephants, baboons from our tent and from the lobby.

Just to introduce you to the dream : after a long difficult road, you are welcomed with an iced cold towel and a fresh glass of Champagne and a glass of fresh fruit juice – what else can we dream about?

In a one single word : PERFECT !!!!!!!!

The first night of our safari was spent at Kirawira Tented Camp and we wished we could have stayed here longer. All other evenings were spent in various Serena Lodges, which were nice, but this place was awesome! The scenery, food and service was excellent. Enjoyed the gorgeous sunset while sipping champagne, viewed a beautiful starfilled sky and listened to roaring lions in the distance at night. The ensuite bathroom and large netted beds were very welcoming. Highly recommend the experience of staying in a luxury tented camp.

My wife and I stayed at Kirawira Tented Camp on October 14 and 15.

Of the six lodging facilities that we stayed at during our northern Tanzania safari I would rate Kirawira number one for overall service.

The meals were elegant and formal. Charles in the dining area is extremely personable and seeks to make your dining experience an event to remember.

Wireless Internet access is available for a small fee.

Wildlife is free to roam in the area and we had a herd of elephants pass on both sides of our tent at 4:00 A.M. (It got me out of bed and peering through the tent flaps!)

We booked a hot-air balloon ride while we were at the camp and since we had to leave the grounds at 5:30 A.M. that morning the staff brought us tea and pastries to our tent prior to our morning departure. (Breakfast isn’t served until 7:30 A.M.)

For your safety if you need to be outside your tent after sunset (returning to tent after supper/beverages) you must be accompanied by staff of the resort.

One afternoon we returned after our safari in the midst of a downpour, and were met in the parking lot by staff with umbrellas.

The western Serengeti (at least in early October) was home to many large cats (lions, cheetahs, and leopards), a great hippo pool, and all of the other animals you would expect to see in the savannahs were present in large numbers.

The western corridor of the Serengeti was absolutely amazing. Were were there early in September, so we had missed the migration but some of the best animal viewing was here(we also visited Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire). Kiriwira is a small tented camp, and there were only about 15 or so other people there while we were there, so you get a very attentive staff. The game drives, food, and accomodations were amazing.

I was a little concerned that Kirawira is owned by a big hotel chain (Serena) and the experience may not match the price but I was wrong. We, especially the kids, loved the camp. The staff were wonderful especially Charles and Mariam who served us like royalty. The camp has an Out of Africa feel to it much like Fitch Huttons or Cottars 1920 camp. The common areas have antique (hunting) safari era furniture. The tents were very large and opulent. The food was spectacular. Very formal service (but exceedingly friendly) for all three meals. They had a beautiful pool overlooking the plains with lots of game visible. The camp is unfenced so animals roam freely and there is a strict policy of being escorted to and from your tent. We had a baboon unzip our tent find a sealed box of water crackers in a zipped bag on a top shelf which he ate outside the tent so one needs to be careful with any food, even chewing gum in the tent.
Unlike the Kenyan camps, Kirawira was completely full, mostly Europeans and I saw new clients replacing anyone leaving so I can say its an extremely popular camp at least in the first week of July which is supposed to be the peak migration season in the Western Serengeti. The views are spectacular and the camps location optimal for game viewing in the W.Serengeti. A wonderful experience.
