Kirawira Serena Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 23, 2012

We booked a 3 person room at the Kirawira Tented Camp only to find out that it appeared to be after thought as to where the third person would sleep! They put a mattress on the floor in a room/tent DEFINITELY for only 2 persons!. We were crowed plus no mosquito netting available for the mattress on the floor!!!!!
Each room is supposed to come equipped w 2 flashlights and they are definitely needed for travel on the camp grounds. We hand NONE. It took 1 1/2 days and numerous requests for the staff to locate just ONE for us!
Lastly the wait staff was very kind however the lack of consistency and body odor were definite negatives.
I really expected more of this place considering the price. we satyed at 2 other camps during our Tanzania trip and found them to be far and above in level of quality, responsiveness of the staff and the prices were much less.
Our other camps also provided absic drinks for free (included in the price!) Here my son had to pay for a bottle of water when served at the bar. We were told we could have it delivered to the room for free by housekeeping but is we ordered from the bar we had to pay!

We stayed at Kirawira for the last 2 nights of our safari in May. It was very long drive from Central Serengeti, and everyone was hot and tired from the drive. That all changed the minute we saw the incredibly beautiful "tents" and gorgeous property. What a treat in the middle of Africa!

Within minutes all 4 of 20 something "kids" were diving into the swimming pool. When you get tired of swimming, all you need to do is look out over the deck onto the vast Serengeti plains. The views were stunning but especially the sunsets as you stand on the pool deck or in the lobby having a cool drink.

These were definitely the most luxurious tents we stayed in with gleaming hardwood floors, marble bathroom counters and showers, hot water 24 hours a day, large 4 poster beds surrounded by mosquito netting.
The lobby area is also beautiful. Like a trip back to Edwardian times, old English furniture, Indian rugs, brass lamps. It is what you would imagine super-wealthy travellers of years gone by would have experienced.
The staff and service are impeccable and they are there to please you. Food choice and quality was excellent, as you would expect from any 4 or 5 star restaurant in Europe or around the world.

Western Serengeti was far less busy than Central Serengeti, and you could go over an hour without seeing another vehicle. One morning the camp vehicle came over to show us where they had seen 7 lions hiding the the tall grasses. Without their guidance, we would never have been able to spot them.

If you want luxury accommodation in a peaceful environment, this is the place.

We stayed here two nights in May this year and we were all pretty much in awe of the camp - every aspect of it. It has great views of the Western Serengeti and a lot of wildlife abounds around the camp, making a short walk from your luxury tent to the lounge and dining tents an exciting one, especially after dark. One of the other guests had spotted a leopard ambling across a few feet from the camp parking area that very morning though we did not see it. One has to always be accompanied by the lodge staff ofcourse. We had already past the Migration on our way here but despite the lack of numbers we had an exceptional stay. Once again we heard a lion call but we couldnt locate it though we did follow its spoor the next morning. The sunsets were amazing. Even though the service was trademark Serena, I would add that the service at Kirawira is a notch higher - the staff seem to have that much extra time on their hands despite their workloads. The dining staff were especially good with kids and elders alike.

Room Tip: All tents have Serengeti views and they are luxury tents with a wooden look but with modern fittings...

We arrived in mid-June, and while we missed the migration, we were very happy with our stay at Kirawira. Kirawira is set a bit above the plains and offers beautiful views. The staff was very attentive and sweet, the food was delicious and the furnishings were very comfortable. I would highly recommend a stay at this camp.
Game viewing in the surrounding area was good even though the grasses were high. We saw many elephant herds, giraffe, crocodile, lion and the usual gazelle, impala, etc.

Fabulous!

We were a group traveling through Tanzania and Kenya and found this accommodation to be one of the best. Our group was upgraded to Kirawira so obviouslyu found it value for money. Found champagne on arrival nice touch and the dining experience with a choice of many courses much better e next morning. than buffet style of others especially the silver service. Coffee and muffin brought to tent before breakfast a nice touch. Surprised to find a " kill" less than 100m from site next morning. Our group still takes about this spot.

Our stay at this lodge was part of a trip to East Africa. We found the food quality and general service to be only average. The individual lodges were quite nice with comfortable beds and indoor plumbing that mostly worked. However, the food, especially dinner was overcooked almost every night, especially fish options. The staff was people were pleasant but often not available in the middle of the day for guests.

Exactly as you would imagine from the description. Views over the escarpment are fantastic, a great pool if you have time, and the "tenting" experience with all the bells & no downside. The staff & food were excellent; we just needed more time to enjoy the luxury on our first night on safari. Great wildlife in the vicinity. The best of the lodges we stayed in during the week. Wake up to the morning corus at dawn - only on safari would this be acceptable!
