“Beautiful, but...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

We arrived Jan. 1 after having a difficult time crossing the river to get to the camp. The camp is beautiful with excellent food. For our one full day there we were cut off from any game viewing by the river that was uncrossable. The managment responded with a "That's Africa" shrug. We ran out of water for showers. We were offered complimentary wine with dinner as compensation which we were then charged for. Although I am sure this is a wonderful camp when things go well, the true judge of hospitality is how guests are taken care of when adversity arises.

Our family stayed two nights at the Asanja Africa Tented Camp in January 2013. We were greeted with drinks and hot towels by Basil and his team of friendly staff. The service was outstanding, the meals were top quality, possibly the best meals served of all the lodges and camps we stayed at. The remoteness of this camp was made all the more amazing when nearby we saw lions lazing in trees and the elusive leopard which made for the most fantastic photographs. The tents were comfortable and private, the beds and towels were clean and plush, even offering white bathrobes 'hotel style'. We simply loved sitting around the campfire (bush tv) chatting with the staff and the masai boys. Nothing was too much trouble and our every need was met and we felt entirely safe. We could charge our phones and download photos on our laptop. Of all the locations we travelled during our 10 day private game drive, it was here at Asanja that we were spoiled for choice with the sightings of lions, elephant, giraffe, impalas, leopard, cheetah, hyenas, hippos and more. Whilst quite confronting, it was also on our game drive near Asanja we saw a pride of lionesses provide a zebra kill for their dozen or so cubs. We highly recommend staying at Asanja Africa Tented Camp when visiting the Serengeti - it's the real deal. Thank you to all the fine staff who looked after us so well. What an unforgettable experience. Brian Tracy Brooke and Liam, Brisbane Australia.

Room Tip: The tents offer either single beds or a double beds. Make sure to specify what you want.

Six of us Canadians stayed two nights at this idyllic place in the majestic Serengeti. What a treat it was! Arrived there after two days of "traditional camping". So lets just say that the ladies were quite thrilled! The staff was outstanding and very professional. Greeted with warm facecloths and a cold beverage (...again, ladies were impressed). The tents were beautifully appointed with everything you would ever need in the middle of the Serengeti. Good separation between tents affording good privacy. Great bed (they actually placed a hot bottle under the covers to warm your bed....again "two thumbs up" from the ladies..) , in-tent toilets and hot shower (prepared "to order"). Aside from the setting which was breathtaking, we enjoyed sitting around the camp fire having pre-dinner drinks and chatting with the wonderful staff (Manager Arnold, Samwell, Maleo, and Spemba) who made sure our every need was met. Tsetse flies were never an issue, even though they were in season. It is a fair drive to get there, and the access road is, well, "safari style". After sunset, for safety reason, you need to flash your flashlight so one of the staff can come to your tent to escort you to where you need to go....that was kind of neat and made you realize where you really were. Although I must say we never felt unsafe there, the animals are around (giraffes, elephants, impalas, lions, etc) but that's why you go on a safari. Would definitely recommend 2 night stay minimum. The food was fine, but would not say outstanding. This is not what you would call a "budget" resort, but we felt it was absolutely worth it and would recommend it without hesitation. Truly a once in a lifetime experience!!

Food was amazing and of such a high standard - very impressive when you think of the remote location and limited facilities
Rooms are beautiful and very comfortable - very nice touch that you can get coffee/tea in your room in the mornings while your shower is being prepared
Service, again fantastic - super friendly staff
So all in all, i had a very good time at Asanja.

However, i just wanted to mention a few points that might be worthwhile for travelers considering Asanja (during rainy season):
* The track to the camp goes through a 4x4 offroad track and involves river crossing. We got stuck in the mud once (1hour delay), had to help another jeep get out of the river once (1h delay) and apparently, a group staying there a night after us were not able to cross it due to water levels and had to cross in the water.
* The paths to the rooms were also very muddy (ok admittedly i came extremely unprepared for that!)

Having said that, i still HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place - just remember that there is a chance of getting stuck during the rainy season.

And as piece of advice to the owners: until you have a bridge, you need to have a back-up jeep and necessary equipment to ensure visitors can have a dry crossing.

Asanja was the last stop for my girlfriend and I on a 10 day Tanzania holiday. Of all the various places we stayed, Asanja was the best because it had the most personalized service and most authentic bush setting. The hyena and lion calls at night were fantastic! Everybody was so attentive to our needs that we felt really special. The food was great in general with the bush breakfast a highlight.

I would recommend spending at least 2 or three nights here and enjoy sitting at the camp fire at night and the many great conversations you will have the all the staff.

It is true that the camp is in a Tsetse area, however many of the other famous camps in the Moru region such as Dunia are also in the same Tsetse area. There are lots of Tsetse flies around your car as you drive to the camp because they think the car is an animal and because they can fly at 40km/hour they stay with you until camp after which they realise the car is not an animal and start to move away into the bush. The staff come and spray the car before you get out so that the flies don't come near the camp itself. They also hang black and blue material from some trees in the area which attract the flies away from the tents. Overall the fly situation was completely manageable and should not make you hesitate on visiting this beautiful camp.

Asanja Africa (Africa lovers) mobile camp is a good spring board to explore southern Serengeti. I think that this place is targeted at couples but we were a couple plus mother in law and still enjoyed ourselves. The tent is spacious with separate compartments each for dressing/bathroom, shower and flush(!) toilet. The filmy divisions don't provide heaps of privacy but it was not problematic. The staff patrol at night to prevent unexpected encounters with curious wildlife (common practice within camps inside the park, but reassuring nonetheless). Waking up in the morning to a view overlooking forestland, giraffes and wisps of mist was just unforgettable. The small crew of staff are thorough and attentive, service is individualised to your needs. The camp showcases some Masai traditions and we enjoyed interesting discussion and stories from the staff. The only drawback about this place was the setting in tse tse territory (only a problem immediately following vehicle arrival) although the staff made efforts to minimise our exposure. I hope the government invests soon in the nearby bridge as the camp may become inaccessible during the rains. Otherwise, try this place - it's a gem.

Asanja is top class. Stunning location and a proper safari experience in real wilderness. Lovely, friendly staff. Breakfasts and suppers good quality given its miles from anywhere. Tents very comfortable and hot water bottles a great touch. Magic hearing lions & elephants during the night and waking up with morning coffee to watch to impala grazing just yards away. Loved having a few hours of electricity and bucket shower every evening - felt great to get away properly from urban life!
