A fantastic and magical experience: a knowledgeable and delightful guide (Tuma) and a brilliant spotter (Pius) supported by a highly hospitable “management team” of Alex Walker, Gerard and Robyn with their font of ever-so-slightly terrifying stories of life in the bush and their calm determination to make sure you really savour every moment of your stay. Amazingly good food and very comfortable accommodation, with the lovely touches of hot coffee/chocolate at your wake up in the dark of the morning to hot water delivered to your showers when you return from your day. To go to sleep to the noise of wildebeest and hippo wandering past your tent, having had an entertaining dinner with the other guests, and wake up looking out towards the rift valley as the sun comes up is something we will never forget. From the drives to the walks, nothing was ever too much trouble for the Serian team. For our children, who had never been to before, this was almost too much for them – “we’ll never be able to come back as this was just so perfect”. If you want mown grass and a commercial feel don’t go to Serian: if you want to experience Africa at its best, with a brilliant team then do.

whoa!! this was by far the best time i have ever had away from everything familiar. i set out to go to a place where i knew no one, to make new friends, expand my cognitive horizons and lose myself in nature. AND w-o-w, did.i.ever!!

at alex walker's serengeti north camp, i felt very warmly received from the moment i landed at the kogatende airstrip by gerard and baraka, to when i got to camp by robyn, to the very courteous and friendly staff and last but not least, mingling with other guests at the camp fire under an ocean of stars garnished by the milky way right above us.

all the meals were absolutely amazing and the conversations had at the dinner table during and following the three course meals were something i looked forward to every night. going back to the tent to sleep and finding a welcoming hot water bottle in my bed was so unexpected but a gesture i came to profoundly appreciated.

the daytime drives (and one walk) to explore the serengeti and see the animals in their natural habitats were extraordinarily authentic and personal experiences that did not, in the least, feel commercialized. the people at serengeti north camp became my friends, and i literally got teary eyed when i got into the jeep to leave -i would have stayed longer if i could. without a doubt, i hope to be back -both to the north camp and to the ngorongoro camp...

Room Tip: trust the staff, they've got your best interest at heart!!

The camp was excellent. The food was very good. The staff was wonderful, skilled, accomodating and friendly. Great game viewing. Our whole family (2 adults, 3 teenagers) enjoyed the experience. Highly recommended.

Alex Walker's Serengeti North camp by far my favorite out the 4 we stayed in during a two week safari in Tanzania and Kenya this past July (2013). From the food, to the setting, to the tents themselves, everything exceeded expectation. Having a private guide was ideal. Ours took the time to get to know us and our preferences from day one. By the end of our time there we had seen every animal we had mentioned was of interest and were almost always the first ones to spot them. My dad mentioned our guide, Tuma, in his review below, and I think his enthusiasm, professionalism and sense of humor deserve another mention. He really made each day better than the last and had the best attitude when it came to our needs. The other person in camp who deserves a big honorable mention is Robyn, the camp host/ manager. She was superb, always waiting there with a huge smile when you arrived back from a days drive, eager to hear stories and see pictures. And the bush bath she arranged for me was absolutely one of the most incredible moments of my trip. I would go back all over again just for another chance to sit out there in that copper tub watching the sunset over the plains. I feel so lucky to have been a part of the Serian experience, it is truly one not to be missed on a trip to the Serengeti.

Alex Walker's Serengeti North camp was our favorite location during a two week safari in Tanzania and Kenya in mid-July, although other Alex Walker camps were also great! I agree with all of the other reviews, but feel that the most important thing to understand for those planning a safari is the importance of having a driver, tracker and jeep dedicated solely to you throughout your stay. They get to know your preferences and stay with you each day, so there is no negotiating with others if you wish to spend an hour watching lion cubs (as we did), or to enjoy one of their incredible bush breakfasts or lunches in the shade of an Acaia tree and stay out most of the day. This option is not available at most camps. Our guide, Tuma, was young, energetic, articulate, good-natured and well-informed. He taught us to have the patience to wait for incredible sightings, such as three cheetahs hunting and a kill, or a pride of 11 lions emerging from their den at days end (including 7 cubs) and hunting wildebeest. As others, we also saw two exciting wildebeest crossings (on my bucket list), as well as a week-old elephant, and a leopard on our first game drive. We enjoyed meeting Alex, and Robyn was the perfect camp host - friendly, upbeat and attentive to all needs. She clearly provided my adult daughter, Carly, a favorite and beautiful memory with the sundowner bush bath she arranged on the outskirts of the camp - big tub full of steaming hot water, a glass of wine, a campfire and an incredible view of our best sunset! Although the Mara in Kenya had as much wildlife, the lack of other jeeps and incredible natural beauty of the northern Serengeti was a notch better. Finally, take the morning walking safari. We found they can be exciting! Our three days here were all spectacular. Make Serian Serengeti North your first choice!

Room Tip: With only 6-7 tents, all are great. I prefer one further from the dinner tent, just to increase chan...

Had an absolutely wonderful time at Serengeti north! Stayed for the first week of July, and were incredibly lucky to find ourselves in the midst of the migration (and by midst, I truly mean midst - we were woken up at night by wildebeest shuffling around our tent)! We loved everything about the camp - from being woken up every morning by coffee/tea and a delicious cookie, to dinners around the table with Robyn and Alex. And the actual game drives were incredible - we were very lucky to have Masha as our guide and Sidela as our spotter - they were not only incredibly knowledgeable, but amazingly patient in terms of our staying as long (or as short!) as we wanted at any particular spot or with any animals.

Serian was great because with such a small camp, we truly got a personal experience... at one point, we mentioned that we hadn't had any real African food on our entire trip (the food throughout Tanzania was delicious, but we wanted to eat like locals!). The next thing we knew, a private dinner had been set up outside the camp where we had a bonfire, sat at a low table on pillows and ate ugali (the local staple). Talk about a special experience (made even more special by the fact that Robyn, the camp manager, joined us for dinner... she's absolutely lovely).

All in all, the Serengeti was the best part of our safari in Tanzania, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Serian camp. Enjoy!
