Alex Walker's Serian
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 28, 2012

You have to go here, I went to the camp when it was in the South and cannot recommend it enough. Quite simply the experience of a lifetime. I went with my 14 year old son and from the minute we arrived I knew we were going to have an amazing time. (The owner, Alex Walker, taught my son to drive in one of the 4x4 jeeps, one of the highlights for him as he went charging down a dirt track!) The camp itself is beautiful, the tents so, so comfortable, with lovely furniture and a far cry from any camping that I know. The attention to detail is what impressed me most, lovely crisp sheets, hot water bottles at night, fresh coffee brought to you in the morning. The wildlife was truly exceptional, too many highlights to list but seeing a one day old elephant in the wild was extraordinary and has to have a mention. The guides were so friendly and knowledgable, and each safari brought its own excitements, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dog and herds and herds of wildebeest. Nothing was ever too much trouble for any of the staff. After an early morning safari, breakfast was served out of the back of the jeep and eaten whilst watching the giraffes grazing, back to camp for a delicious lunch, perhaps a walking safari in the afternoon, sundowners at magic hour set up overlooking the plains one night, overlooking a lake the next, a glass of wine sitting around the camp fire and then a delicious dinner. Exceptional.

Whether its the romantic notion of an old fashioned safari or simply a romantic safari you have in mind, Alex Walker's Serian mobile camp makes it all come to life. The canvas tents are elegantly furnished evoking images of a luxury safari from a bygone era. Whilst soaking in the huge steamy copper bath by candlelight, surrounded by the expanse of serengeti you being to imagine yourselves as the intrepid explorers with only the sounds of the animals for company.

As a couple, family or group or perhaps a fanatical photographer the benefit of having your own private vehicle is a huge plus. You are in charge of your own agenda, whether it be trying to track down an elusive leopard or wait patiently for the iconic river crossing, you will not have to compromise.

Rather than repeat all the great comments in the earlier reviews below, I will only say what a memorable time we had. The accomadation, the hosts and staff, the food, the guides, the wildlife and all the other little surprises made our stay special!

In the search for a safari experience, you will no doubt view so many websites that they will all start to run together. Your travel agent also will no doubt fill your inbox with suggestions and endless possibilities. With that in mind, my simple advice is this: do not make the mistake of missing an opportunity to visit Alex Walker's Serian. Expert guides and perfect location (location, location) will give you the absolute best opportunity to step into your favorite nature documentaries on the great migration and the Serengeti itself. The accommodations are as good as they come, the support staff attentive and friendly - giving a genuine sense of service and the food was excellent. Special arrangements come together seamlessly ( I celebrated my 30th birthday at Serian) and while it's a small detail, when you return to camp for a well earned rest, you can plug in your iPhone and listen to your favorite music (I think I might have left-out the sunset bathtub). When we, arrived Alex said "If you can make yourself feel at home here, you're on the right track." In fact, that was easy, the only hard part was leaving.

Sometimes you come across a place that is just magical and Serian certainly fits this description. Nestled in the Serengeti Mara you will find a small, intimate camp with custom luxury tents, great food and even better people. The personal guides are very friendly and knowledgeable and ensure you will see tons of game. In fact, we saw more game here than on any other part of our African experience. If you want to see a Wildebeest river crossing (which is something not to be missed), Alex's team will ensure you experience this amazing scene. Alex is a wonderful host and will accommodate you in any way he can; it really feels like you are at home when staying at Serian. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone travelling in Tanzania...5 stars does not even do this place justice.

My husband and I, along with 5 adult ‘children’ spent 4 wonderful nights at Serian camp. It was the last stop on a 2-week visit to Tanzania and it was, by far, the highlight of our trip. Alex and Billy welcome you into their home as if you are their favoured guests. Each and every one of us was catered to as Billy is a gracious hostess, seamlessly running the day-to-day, and ensuring that our every need was met. Alex, with his knowledge of the country, its people and wildlife provided for highly entertaining and insightful conversations. The location is ideal, near the river, so that it was just a short drive to catch the crossings. The accommodations were luxurious, even though this is a tented camp. All our creature comforts were provided for. Meals were served in a relaxed yet polished fashion and the food was extremely well prepared. We had a number of dietary restrictions, and all were accommodated without a problem. The very knowledgeable private guides and spotters combined professionalism with just the right amount of friendliness and ensured that we got the most out of each and every drive. We highly recommend Alex Walker’s Serian camp and it will always be one of the best memories of our trip to Tanzania.

We had a large family group for 4 nights at Alex Walker's Serian camp in the northern Serengeti. All had a great time with Alex, Billie and the great staff at the camp. Game viewing was fantastic with the following highlights among our group:
-- 2 Mara River crossings and 1 tributary crossing. One sighting of a croc kill on a crossing and a post crossing sighting of a croc with his prey in his jaws
-- 2 cheetah sightings. We patiently followed a pair of cheetah and then saw them kill a gazelle. A great thing about Alex and his guides is that they are patient and will follow or stay with animals when they think something interesting may happen
--a leopard enjoying the early morning sun atop a large bolder. As we watched, a lioness walked on to a slightly higher bolder just above the leopard. The leopard was very aware of the lioness but it did not appear she ever was aware of the leopard as the bolders were screened by brush. We had this leopard to ourselves for about 45 minutes and have amazing pictures of the lioness and leopard. This sighting occurred because we were following a pack of 6 hyena.
-- a rhino
-- lots of crocs, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and of course, wildebeest
-- an old bull water buffalo walking right through a pride of 15 lions to get to his watering hole. The lions were no match for this guy and it was amazing to watch him fearlessly charge into the lions.

Alex's place may not be for everyone. It's not luxurious, but it beats most any camping one will ever do. Hot showers whenever you want, flush toilets, king size bed, etc. this is a place you come to see the game and you go hard. We left at dawn and returned at dusk and that is what you really need to do if you want to see things.

I give Serian very high marks and would go back again.

We stayed at the Serengeti Mara tented camp for four nights and absolutely loved it. The tents are luxurious with very comfy beds and soft sheets, The bucket shower was more than adequate and we appreciated being able to take as many showers as we wanted each day. Laundry is included which is a nice touch. What we loved most was the atmosphere of the camp. Alex and his partner Billy made sure that everything ran smoothly and were perfect hosts at the communal dinner table every night. The private vehicles and top quality guiding capped it all off. We saw wildebeest crossing the Mara River every night that we were there (just 15-30 min drive from the camp to the crossing sites thanks to excellent position). Our guides Sadala and Madebe knew exactly where to position us to get the best views without disrupting the crossing.

Highly recommended - book directly with them through their website if you can!
