“My Favorite Lodging During Our Safari Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

This was by far my favorite lodge on our vacation. Yes it's a tent but it's extremely spacious. They even have a 'chandelier' in the tent and the floors are wood! The bathroom is very roomy. Here, showers are with hot water heated by the staff so it smells a little woodsy. Our attendant was very attentive and would always asks if we needed more water to shower with. The only quirk I found with the lodge is that after you flush the toilet, you have to wait about 5 minutes to flush it again.

Before dinner, weather permitting, they will light up a camp fire (they called it bush tv) and we would sit around the fire talking and having drinks (complimentary) and snacks (cashews, fried banana chips and some kind of fried dough that was delicious).

Dinner was outstanding and on 2 of our nights there, they served us some traditional African dishes that were yummy. On our 2nd night, to celebrate the departure of one of the guests who spent 3 months learning Swahili, the staff baked a cake and did a song and dance around the dining table. It was entertaining and one of the guests even got up and started dancing with them.

The staff was very attentive at all times. On my last night there, I told them I didn't eat lamb, so the manager made something else for me to eat instead. I would have been ok with just eating more soup but I appreciated that he went out of his way to find me something else to eat.

This is a must stay lodge if you do the Serengeti!

We thought our guide was teasing us when he pointed to a cluster of tents in the middle of no where! There were wildebeests and zebra grazing on the dirt road 15-20 feet from the reception area. We were greeted by smiling faces and offered icy cold wash cloths to attack at least some of the accumulated dust on our faces and hands Godwin, the camp manager then gave us a brief orientation while the friendly staff toted our bags to our tent. He offered us drink from the bar ( drinks are complimentary with room price) and we spent the next hour entranced with conversation about his beloved TanzaniaTent is an accurate term but unlike any tent we have seen, wooden floors, separate bath area complete with "talking showers" and a pleasant patio. Our room steward asked us when we would like our showers and he arrived on time with buckets of hot water, stands outside the tent next to the shower and makes sure there is enough water for your shower! Bush TV begins at 6:30. Masai warriors make camp fire the staff arranges chairs around as we have cocktails complete with appetizers and watch the sunset. Amazing!! Meals were well served, delicious and quite varied their soups were especially good! Only complaint....we slept so soundly that we missed the roar of a lion and munching zebras next to our tent. We knew they had been close because they left us "presents" right on the path to our tent. An authentic safari experience awaits those fortunate to stay at Lemala!

Meals were terrific, especially enjoyed the soups.

Room Tip: More night visitors in the tents farthest from the reception tent

Dear GrammySD

Thank you for your wonderful review. I am really happy that you had an authentic safari experience because this is precisely what Lemala camps are all about - offering our guests that "Out of Africa", Hemmingway type safari experience. Our camps are in the best wilderness areas of Tanzania, right in the "middle of nowhere" but even so, we still insist on the freshest ingredients to be served with our mouth watering dishes, top grade cottons for our linen and impeccable service delivery with a very distinct local flavour.
We want each guest to take a part of Africa away with them in their hearts and relive the magic for many years to come.

Thanks again for posting and I wish you safe travels.

We stayed 2 nights here. This is a semi-permanent camp that splits time between the northern and southern Serengeti to best position for the great migration. The location is excellent, with a view of the Mara River from the camp. We saw lots of wildebeest and zebra, including several within the camp area during our stay. The tents are great, with wood floors, comfortable beds, solar lighting and a bath area with sink, flush toilet and shower. You tell the staff when you’d like to shower and they bring hot water which is hoisted in a container above the tent to provide shower water. It works surprisingly well and was very comfortable. The staff was excellent and very accommodating. Food was wonderful with great flavors, quantity and variety. We loved our stay and would definitely return if in the area.

Dear SteveinCH

Thank you for posting your review on Trip Advisor. Lemala Mara is situated right on the Mara River, the ideal location for seeing the migration and the crossings at their very best. The camp is in fact a stone's throw away from one of the busiest crossing points which is certainly a distinct advantage if you want to see lots of action. One of the big attractions is the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra that congregate around the camp, certainly a magnificent and unforgettable site for many of the guests who have stayed at here.
The best time to visit Lemala Mara is between July and October.

Thanks again for posting and I wish to you happy travels.

Lemala Mara really hits all the right notes. You have the authentic bush experience with all the little luxuries that make it so comfortable. The service was impeccable and food was delicious. Although excited to see more of the Serengeti, we were sorry to leave this lovely haven.

Dear JO63048

We are happy to hear that you had a great time with us at Lemala Mara and have taken home some great memories of the camp, staff and northern Serengeti. We try hard to give an authentic East African safari experience from that by-gone romantic era.
Lantern lit bush dinners, champagne lunches on the plains under a tree, sipping drinks on a rock watching an orange sun sink behind Acacia trees are just some of the moments which become etched in guests' memories and treasured for many years to come.
We hope to see you back with us in the not too distant future and thanks again for posting.

Safe travels and best wishes

We stayed for 4 nights at this wonderful friendly camp. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and looked after. The accommodation in luxury tents is superb with views of the Mara river form your door. Bucket showers are an experience but a luxury as well. The staff are a superb team, the food is good and drinks are included.
Communal lunch (if not on a drive) and dinner are an excellent time to meet others and share experiences.
The game drives were fantastic with a very keen guide, we were lucky and saw 4 "crossings" when ens of thousands of wildebeast cross the Mara on the migration. But we also saw lots of other animals and had the chance to watch their behaviour. To wake up and see zebra and giraffe just outside the tent and hear lions roar in the night was very special.
This part of The Serengeti is quite quiet and when you are watching a spectacle such as a crossing or lions there are only a few other vehicles.
Thank You to all at Lemala we hope we will see you again.

Room Tip: If you have difficulty in walking tent 6 is closest to the communal tent

Dear Ndoroman

If travellers to Tanzania are looking to see one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles on earth, then the north Serengeti is the place to see hundreds of thousands of wildebeest crossing the Mara river either on their way back from the Masai Mara, or on their way to it. Lemala Mara is perfectly positioned just above one of the main crossing points where guests can watch the crossings from the camp, or drive one minute to be right at the action. I am so happy that you enjoyed our camp, staff, service and food and although we are a seasonal camp, we pride ourselves in excellence on all fronts of service delivery. Thanks again for posting.

Stayed the last two nights of our safari at Lemala Mara tent camp. My wife was not feeling well and the staff sent someone for medication for her. Wife stayed a camp first morning and was given tour of kitchen area where they were baking bread and dinner rolls in a charcoal oven. Watched the Wilderbeast migration across the Mara river - a sight not to be missed. Food was very good and the service and attention to detail was fantastic

Dear Fred S

Thank you so much for posting on Trip Advisor about your experience at Lemala Mara. I am sorry that your wife was not feeling well and missed some of the game viewing. I am happy to hear though that the staff were able to help and show her around the kitchen. Even though all of the cooking is done in a smallish tent, we pride ourselves in serving our clients incredibly delicious food at each meal. Our chefs receive training on an annual basis, where they are taught new skills in the culinary arts. We are truly blessed at having such dedicated and talented people working in our camps.

Safe travels and best wishes
