“An outstanding camp, that capped off a great safari”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2011

In July we had the good fortune of spending our last three nights in the Serengeti at the Dunia Camp. Peter and Richard our hosts were outstanding but even more importantly all the staff made us feel like welcome members of their family. Simba the chef managed to whip up creative and delicious meals every day - amazing really given the location - and the location for the camp is simply perfect with a long view over the African savanna and great "bush television" at night

We stayed for 2 nights at Dunia camp.
The staff is very dedicated and friendly.
The tent is nice decorated an the beds are fine. Staying in the tent gives you the real safari feeling with the elephants and zebra's around the tent by night.

Tanks Richard for yor hospitality and this exceptional fine experience!

We stayed at Dunia for two nights (after staying at a number of other camps across Tanzania). DUnia was by some margin the most expensive and, in some respects, deserved the extra money - in particular the location is great - right in the Serengeti but in more of a secluded area away from much of the traffic, but with an abundance of animals literally on your tent porch. We had elephants about 20 yards away at night time and roars of lion / hyena chats very nearby.

The staff are all friendly - Peter is a host at dinnertime, with all guests being on one table. This worked well during our stay and I am sure most guests will be likeminded and friendly.

The food was a little disappointing - not at breakfast, which is very good indeed, but the dinnertime food was, at times, the poorest we had during our stay in Tanzania. At times the chef appears to be making things far too complicated - perhaps make things simpler and better.

The tent is great - very roomy. Be aware that the showers are "bucket showers" - you need to get the staff to come and fill your buckets with the warm water and you can then turn on / off the water to suit - it does work and you get used to it very quickly.

All drinks are included in the price which helps with the premium you pay here - if the food could be made better at dinnertime, it would certainly deserve it.

This tented camp in the central Serengeti is run by Asilia; we stayed at three of their camps during our trip and they all have a similar configuration with varying levels of service and luxury. Dunia offered the best animal noises at night, which is one of the great joys of tent camping in Africa!

The tents are very nice with en suite bathroom facilities. The shower is on demand and hot water is brought to you. Although our shower had some minor operational issues, generally the facilities worked well, and having a flush toilet inside your tent is certainly a luxury! Laundry is included here, as are beverages, and the only extra charges you incur are for "top shelf" liquor. So you can relax and enjoy yourself without the nickel and dime charges of many places.

In the evening there is a campfire and then dinner. The dinner is generally one long table where all guests dine together. This is good is you are an extrovert and less than ideal if you are an introvert, so be prepared accordingly. We tried to skip the campfire drinks and appetizers without success - staff was certain we would want to partake despite our best efforts to explain otherwise. That said, all staff were nice and accommodating. Lunch is typically separate seating per group and is buffet style, and breakfast as well. Boxed breakfasts and lunch were good here.

The food was good. The camp location is a good one in the central Serengeti. This is a mobile tented camp, which means it is only up for part of the year and then removed. This is a very pleasant way to stay on safari, but know yourself - tented camps offer the most rustic wildlife experience yyet you still have the luxury of flush toilets and hot water. If you like camping this is the best option for you! Permanent camps have tented walls but are often on wood or concrete foundations and are more your speed if you are an RV type of camper. Lodges are more like resorts or hotels, African style, and are a nice choice if you do no t like camping or you feel you need surroundings more similar to home. As far as tented camps go, Dunia is a very nice one and we would stay there again.

At the time of our visit, Peter was the manager. He made efforts to see that we had what we needed.

Dunia is the most exceptional and memorable place that I have stayed in all of Tanzania -- and that is after having done four safaris in the country! The location was spectacular -- you just had to step outside of your tent in order to see wildlife (giraffe, impala, gazelle, zebra) spilling out across the plains. But what made the Dunia experience so unique and special was the incredible, thoughtful service. Each member of the staff was thoughtful and conscientious -- they even remembered our drink orders every evening! The food was the best we'd had the entire safari -- even after staying in lodges known for their gourmet meals. We will never forget our time at Dunia and would go back in a heartbeat if we could!

We travelled in Tanzania and our last stop was Dunia Camp. The camp is basic, bucket showers and in the middle of nowhere in the bush. It has a great central location in the Serengeti, fantastic guide ( Thompson), wonderful manager ( Richard), warm and friendly athmosphere right out of a movie. We LOVED Dunia! The lion visit at nigth, roaring and leaving impressive footprints right outside the tent....and much more. The staff goes out of its way to be helpful and the cook team is amazing. A real jewel!

We spent 2 nights here and had the best time!

Why???
- The service is the best. The team that work here are truly dedicated to make your stay incredible. From putting hot water bottles in our bed to ensure we did not get a chill in the night to waking us in the morning with a tray of tea - they have thought every detail.

- The safari guides are first class. We would recommend using them as they know the area inside out and have undergone some serious training and recruitment process. They also have great general knowledge and their english is faultless. We will never forget the evening safaris we did - we watched the sun go down whilst chatting to our guide and enjoying a bottle of beer (he was on soft drink!).

- The food was fantastic. We are massive food lovers so we a bit worried that the standard would not be that great in a camp. We were soooo wrong.....the food was great. They even have a patisserie chef!

We still can not get over the standard of this place considering it is in the middle of the Serengeti. You MUST come here if ever you come to the Serengeti.
