“Best...trip...ever!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013

My husband and I traveled to Grumeti Reserve in September 2013 and had the pleasure of staying at Faru Faru for 6 nights. I won't repeat all the amazing comments about Faru Faru, but I will confirm all of them! Words cannot describe how fantastic this lodge is. The room was spectacular with floor to ceiling windows. We stayed in room 1, the furthest from the main lodge, and had views of both watering holes. My husband and I would sit on our deck, and watch herds of 30 elephant, baboons, monkeys, gazelles, etc walk by our room. The food was amazing, and each meal was creative and well thought out (apparently Faru Faru is known for their lunch, and that was always our favorite meal! Thank you Chef K!). Our butler James was also very attentive and kind (thank you for my Chai Bora with brown sugar and milk every morning!!!). We also want to thank our driver, James, for his knowledge and patience on all our game drives. Apparently, we hold the record for longest game drive, and were so grateful James stayed out with us because we got to watch the most amazing cheetah chase.

This is by far the best place we have ever stayed at. Don't hesitate, just go!!! Warmest thank yous to James, James, Chef K, Madelein and Rodger. We cannot wait to return!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 1, the furthest from the main lodge. Perfect views of the 2 watering holes and al...

The rooms were spectacular, with large glass windows and and an outdoor shower. We especially loved the food. The dining room offered excellent choices and a surprise breakfast in the bush was outstanding. The makeshift loo was a highlight.
The spa was beautiful but the massage was only fair (too gentle.)

This lodge was all in all the best of the high quality lodges we stayed at, but two or three things went wrong at the end of the trip that almost ruined our stay. First of all, the Singita policy of not letting other drivers into their reserve meant that we had to transfer to another car - not very practical and slightly insulting for our guide who felt like a foreigner in his own country. When we finally did arrive, the manager Roger was absolutely perfect: all of his explanations were clear and very helpful. The room was wonderful, if perhaps a bit over-decorated. The panoramic window gave us an opportunity of seeing elephants right below us - in fact we saw more wildlife here than in the so-called tented camp we stayed at afterwards. But our departure took place in utter confusion. We had been told by our travel agane that a gift was awaiting us at Faru faru, but this never materialized. I wanted to ask the other manager, Madeleine, if she knew anything about it, but she was not around (in fact she seemed to avoid us for some reason). I also needed to ask her about the tip box - so her unavailabilty (and indeed unfriendliness) was problematic. Many of these lodges seem to have not really resolved the tipping problem - as other reviewers have noted. The guest information tells you that a tip box is provided, but then either there is none, or staff expect anyway to get individual tips. All in all, though, I'll try to remember our wonderful morning game drive with Ray (an excellent guide though he did have a problem with the Land Rover's alarm system that went off when we were 4 metres away from about a dozen startled and angry lions!). I'll remember as well the comfort of the room, the view of the elephants walking just below us, and teh warmth of the staff (especially Peter B., our butler).

It always saddens us to hear that certain events negatively affected a guest stay. At Singita we constantly strive to create memorable and life-transforming experiences so we are so sorry for disappointment caused.
Just to clarify the drop off at the gate, if the guide drives through the gate from the National Park there is a fairly substantial park fee that is payable to the Tanzania National Park – both in and out – so we have an agreement with guides that we will collect guests at the gate. This should have been properly explained.
Upon further investigation we can find no instruction to provide a gift from your agent for your stay at Singita Faru Faru so we apologize if that was a mix-up. Madelein is a seasoned lodge manager who has worked with Singita for a number of years, always receiving rave reviews and loved by guests. We are sad to hear that you were not given the necessary attention by the lodge manager during your stay. Madelein feels terrible about this and has taken your feedback as a learning opportunity.
We would love to hear from you again and thank you for your feedback.

It was our first time doing safari and we stayed at four different camps. All of them are high-end camps but Faru Faru is the most expensive one (and perhaps the most high end one).

Faru Faru has the best guide among all. Our guide 'Stephen Chacha' was really professional. He did a very good job scanning for the animals we wanted to see and explaining their behavior with details. He answered our questions with a lot of patience and a smiley face. We really enjoyed our game drives with him.

We were happy about everything until the last day. Before we left for Tanzania, we checked with our travel agent to make sure the tips we were giving were appropriate. We tipped our guide, the general staff and our assigned waiter at Faru Faru separately. While our guide was happy about the tip, our waiter’s demeanor immediately changed after he counted the amount of money he received in front of us (he had previously been quite friendly). He gave us dirty looks and refused to make any eye contact with us, not to mention no word of ‘thank you’. It was a very awkward and uncomfortable moment. It was before our departure for the airstrip and we needed him to radio someone for us. I wish I didn’t have to deal with him at that moment but I had to. So I gave him an additional $10 bill just to have him do that for me. He did radio that person for us but he still didn’t look at me and did not say thank you when I gave him the money.

I asked the couple who stood next to us at the time to see what they did. They told me they only left some money in their room and that’s it. Their waiter didn’t seem to have problem with it. I wonder if it’s because we came from America and we were expected to tip more, or if their waiter was still waiting for his tip so he had yet to react. Or the waiters here are used to ultra wealthy people who tip ultra generously and our ‘appropriate’ tip didn’t meet their expectation. I am still bemused. But in any case, I didn’t expect to pay $3000 a night so as to receive this kind of treatment upon departure, considering tipping, according to the hotel policy, is at our discretion.

Faru Faru has nice rooms and food, like any other 5 star resorts we have stayed in the past. It is special comparing to other lodges in this area because of its location (private game reserve where the vehicles can drive off-road), professionally-trained guides (they receive 9-month training and tests to be a guide for Singita), and modern facilities. I think the first two merits are the reasons that I will come back to a Singita lodge in the future. Maybe I will try a different one.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good I have to say.

Naturally we are disappointed to read this review as we absolutely do not condone such behaviour. We have taken the feedback very seriously and the service staff have been counselled.

We hope to hear from you again.

after three nights at sasakwa i must say the first impression of faru faru was not good. it looked a bit primitive with the rocky steps. but then the property grows on you and it does so very quickly. although i am alone, they put me in a two bedroom lodge with a huge private deck with swimming pool overlooking the grumeti river and what a treat that was. i have a perfect view of the sunrise in the comfort of my bed and that was truly unforgettable. the decor is slightly whimsical yet really comfortable not to mention functional. and the view, wow what a view. endless glass windows give you a superb view of the animals who frequent the area right in front of it. as i am alone i am slightly afraid of going into the outdoor shower at night because animals do come very close to the lodge. so i had a female staff stayed with me while i take a shower and she comes wrap me around in a towel when i am done. i really am spoiled rotten there. i gotten lazy on the last day and dont go on the game drive and guess what, a group of elephants come up to where i was having tea. what a treat it was. one night as i was going around the living room turning off the lights, i heard something outside the door. i know it's an animal but i didnt expect to see a huge buffalo right outside my door. of course i was curious and we looked eye to eye for 5 minutes. that was really exciting :) i also love the fact that they have a bonfire every evening where guests sit around and talked about their adventures of the day. i met some great fellow guests at the lodge. the massage therapist betty is a dream. just amazing. singita, you are the best. now i really want to visit every one of your property :) bravo on a job exquisitely done. two thumbs way up!!!

Where to start with this place? Two pools, the most incredible private rooms, fantastic tour guides, excellent food and wine, the list goes on. You would be excited to stay here if you were in the middle of a big city so to have such luxury in the middle of the Serengeti is quite incredible.
