“Gem of the Serengeti”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2010

Mbalageti will always have a special spot in my heart. We had a special event here and they went above and beyond all of my expectations to make it the event of a lifetime. The views from the lodge are to die for and the rooms are spectacular. Even the lodge rooms are excellent and very reasonably priced. We stayed at the sunset suite for one night and all I can say is 'sheer decadence'. The lodge is located down a 16km road, and the drive down that road takes a good 30min, so it's not something you can easily stop at for lunch, etc. during your safari.
I had such a wonderful time here and got to stay in all three levels of room - lodge, tented chalet and suite - and they are all great. It can be noisy at night - hyena calls, bats, etc. and as you are staying in a tent with canvas walls, those who are light sleepers might want to bring earplugs. But the beds, rooms, everything is top notch and I cannot wait to return!

One of the best places we stayed during our Serengeti trip.
Service, rooms, view... all were top.

Swimming pool was not really clean and the road does get a bit rough ...

Probably one the most imaginative places I’ve stayed at in my life.

mbalageti is off the beaten track set amongst the north-western Serengeti hills, away from the central Serengeti hustle bustle.

There are luxurious tent rooms scattered in the grounds such that each feel isolated and tranquil. the rooms are a good design, built with a combination of canvas, netting, and solid stone walls. Each beautiful room/tent has electricity, ensuite bathrooms, and a generous timber decked balcony overlooking the Serengeti with far reaching views across. The bathrooms are tasteful with roll top baths, massive copper africaesque shower heads, and generous fine towels and linen.

The resort is set on the hilltop so you have far reaching views across the plains of Serengeti from everywhere.

The restaurant/bar is a few 100mts stroll from the tent rooms. After dark, you get escorted by genuine masai tribesmen to go to the restaurant.

The restaurant has a glorious decked seating overlooking the Serengeti, and luxurious european cuisine nicely prepared and presented.

There is a nice bar and a swimming pool adjoining the restaurant again with panoramic views across Serengeti. The best thing about this place is that you are always amongst the natural wilderness, and you never lose sight of your magnificent African surroundings.

Every detail is well considered, well designed, and honestly indigenous. The balcony balustrading, the beds, the bathroom accessories, the huge copper shower head, the solid large brass taps, the tables, the chairs, the towels, every little thing oozes Serengeti and Africa charm and rawness.

We also went on a 4 day safari with Mbalageti safari jeep and their driver/guide. The safari was a great success, our vehicle looked brandnew, well appointed and our driver was courteous, intelligent and knowledgeable.

When choosing this lodge and in general the lodge you are going to stay in serengeti make sure you do your homework first!!! Every season has its best locations, for example November is not a good month to stay at Mbalageti lodge because you will be to far away from the animals. We stayed at a tented shale, the room was enormous and the bathroom vast, it had a bathtub and a shower. The food was the best we had in Africa and the staff could not be any friendlier. It had all the commodities besides a telephone in the room. Internet was free at the business center. What we loved the most was the fact that there was no fence and we were escorted by two Masai for dinner which made us feel like we were having a great adventure

We loved the room, but it was very far from the restaurant or the office. On our last night, the restaurant staff insisted we go check out. It was 9pm, and we were tired, but we hiked up the hill to the office. We were asked to sit down and wait until someone could come and check us out. That, combined with the signs in the room warning us not to steal anything, left a bad taste in our mouths. We stayed in four other luxury tent camps, and had far better experiences at all of them.

Also, at the time of the year we were there, it was an hour drive to see any significant number of game animals.

I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay at the Mbalageti. The atmosphere was amazing and none of the pictures nor website I've seen do it justice. Our room and bathroom were very comfortable, and I loved the unique architectural details and décor, manager on duty mentioned it is South African Architect

A truly superb experience, with great service and food

I loved the fact that everywhere you look at the views you're reminded that you're in Africa -Serengeti the endless plains.

A beautiful place spoilt by a poor welcome and no view from the room. We had heard that this was a wonderful place and had been recommended by a friend who had stayed in one of the Executive Suites. We were really looking forward to it at the end of our trip but being high season we could not run to a tented chalet so booked a Lodge Room. The room itself was OK but there was no view of either sunrise or sunset as advertised. Rooms 1 - 7 in the Lodge face a grass bank and the access road. They are also a full 10 minute walk from the Restaurant which was a surprise. We took the opportunity to look at a tented chalet to compare and the difference was amazing. They are everything you could wish for so my advice is to save up until you can afford one! The pool, bar and restaurant are in a lovely setting overlooking the plains but the pool was out of action due to a fault in the system.
The lady who welcomed us was sullen in her attitude and demanding in her requests for information about when we would eat and what we wanted for lunch the following day. We were left with the impression that things were run for her benefit rather than ours and it didn't make a good first impression after a long tiring day. This was not the case with other staff who were all very helpful and obliging.
The food was variable with breakfast excellent but BBQ chicken in the evening not properly cooked. Best desserts I've had in East Africa which isn't saying a lot but they actually tasted like they were supposed to!
Incidentally, we have had an opportunity to pass our remarks to the owner via a mutual acquaintance and will see if he responds.
