This place is simply amazing. Queit, peaceful getaway I am definately spending my getaways here whenever I am in the country. The staff was very friendly and we had a chat about the local area and culture with abit of lessons on the history too. I went for a culture walk with one of the guides.A very enlightening experience. I loved the food and the chef made me a special..called ugali. The rooms are cosy and unique. The manager Bobby is the friendliest and most helpful manager I have ever come across! The biggest inspiration to go back.

Simply superb in everything! friendly and accommodating staff, good food and and a place for a weary soul to rest...quite, peaceful and serene and most of all you always have the privacy. The place is very ideal for budget conscious individuals like me. The staff are very efficient and professional in their dealings and the food are serve on time. The coffee is highly recommended!

Room Tip: All the rooms are good but the last room on the left side on the topmost villa are highly recommend...

After I made the booking on the website, the receptionist called me within five minutes and confirmed my booking. Thus I got the impression that the hotel actually did have hot showers, good food and quick service...
however we were a bit disappointed. The rooms are quite funny and, if you like funny rooms, cosy. A funky blue colour on the walls and round shapes. No door to the toilet and when sitting in the bed, one can see the person on the toilet in the mirror :) We found it charming, but some might not like it.
There was no power the whole day - it came around 7pm. There was no water (due to a defect pump, I think) before the next morning.
On the first day, we ordered lunch at the hotel. The cook asked us what we wanted - however he only had chicken and chips, and maybe rice. We read on the website that a three course menu including wine and coffee was 13 dollars so when we ordered chicken and chips, we didnt expect it to cost 10 dollars which we were charged at check out!! The cook told us he could make the food in 30 minutes. We would like to spend the afternoon walking, and our son was hungry and tired. After 45 minutes, the cook came back and said that he forgot whether we wanted chips or rice... and after 80 minutes the food was served.
In the evening, the staff made a bonfire for us, which we enjoyed very much.
On the website the hotel promises 5 % student discount. We had to bargain with both the receptionist and the manager several times before they accepted.
Apart from all this, the place is nice with a lush courtyard, a bonfire place and small winding paths and steps between the cottages, and the staff was friendly.

Bobby L, Manager at Babylon Lodge, responded to this reviewResponded October 31, 2012

Dear Guest,
I am sorry you did not find our three rooms as charming as we thought they will be. Yes we have a blue colour that is unique designed by our Belgium friend who is a designer and we have received a lot of positive feed back from most of the guests. we will continue to monitor the preference of the guests and if there will be more guests who are not in favor of those rooms then we will change them, However we have other 18 rooms with modest colours that one can choose from.

Regarding the power problem I am sorry for this too as this is a general problem thought Tanzania but our generator is now up and running and I am sure we next time you we will be in a better position to deal with this power problem. All is well now and one can have electricity as well as hot water showers. We apologize for this problem.

As for our food we apologize for the problem that came up. At Babylon Lodge one can either decide to to choose the main dish or have the four course menu which costs $ 13. The main dish varies in price depending on what you will eat. The four course menu is the one that contains starter, soup, main dish, desert. Tea and coffee will also be served after meals. The four course menu will also be served with a glass of wine or one drink of choice.
I am sorry for the delay too as we had reduced operations for the low season. we have now re-arranged our kitchen operation for the low season and now we have quality and affordable food for all our clients. The new arrangement also takes care of time and we can produce your food within 30 minutes weather in high season or low season.

The 5% discount is applicable to all students but please note that proof of identification will be required for one to get the discount.

At Babylon Lodge we are always keen to listed to our clients and we apologize for the problems that occurred and we now have better operations. We hope to have a chance to serve you again and to prove that we listed. Regards Management.

We felt that Babylon Lodge was a great place to stay for budget conscious travelers looking to stay in a smaller city than Moshi or Arusha. The manager, Bobby, was extremely kind and responsive. The hotel was not the cheapest place we stayed, but it was very nice compared to other accommodations we saw in Moshi. Bobby also helped arranged our Kili climb and while the guides were not part of an "official" company, there were experienced and we successfully made it to the summit and back in 6 days. By not having a company we were able to negotiate better prices and had more flexibility on dates.

Stayed there for 3 nights. Bobby the manager was really friendly and helpful. The hotel has a very beautiful garden and basic rooms. The one day trek was well organised and enjoyed it thoroughly.
The staff did their best, but they could do with a bit of training, we had to wait for a fair amount of time for food in general, and you have to keep on asking to get something done, cause the tend to forget.
But all in all we would go back to this hotel in Marangu without hesitation.

My stay at the Babylon Lodge was pleasant, as were the room and the general environment. What raises the standards of this company is its customer service, which was genuine and always helpful, from helping us choose the appropriate route on Kilimanjaro, to the porters and guides, choosing a driver, shopping for snacks before the hike, communicating with the airport to stay informed about our lost luggage, etc. There was never a moment in which we felt stressed (even when we should have been) because we could depend on the staff at Babylon and Bobby, the manager, in particular.

I would recommend the Babylon Lodge to anyone who wishes to climb kilimanjaro or attend any other expeditions as I am sure you will be taken care of and develop positive memories along the way.

It must be noted, that this lodge is great for its class, so don't expect much more than you pay for. The rooms are simple but clean, and the food was also appetizing.

With its current management I'm quite certain of its success in the future.
