Kipepeo Beach Village
Reviewed August 4, 2014

I was travelling alone in Dar and was recommended Kipepeo by a friend of mine. Was meant to stay two days, but was a little too lazy to make the trip across on the ferry, so did one night at a different spot. This was a stupid mistake as once I pulled myself together and went I wish I had had more time here.
The ferry from dar centre was fine, I went across on foot as no car and then I got a taxi to the resort.
On arrival I was warmly greeted and felt right at home. The staff were very helpful and were able to advise clearly about my next day of travel to Zanzibar and booking ferries etc. In fact they booked it all for me, which helped alot.
I stayed in a chalet which I found to be charming. It was simple yes, yet catered for everything I needed. True, they do not overlook the beach, but that did not bother me as the beach was just a few mins walk away. Bathroom downstairs, so don't drink too many cocktails before bed ;0)
The bar and restaurant was nice and comfortable and the staff were again very friendly without being overly so (a girl on her own get tired of the "where you from comment" all the time. So I was able to relax and not get bothered. Food was tasty and arrived in food time, although I do not think the seafood was caught there and may have been frozen prawns, but I ate the lot anyway.
Would certainly go back.

Room Tip: Beach huts probably just as nice and cheaper then a chalet, but the whole lot seemed pretty sweet.

I spent 3 days at Kipepeo in June 2014 and this was my second stay.
The beach huts are very good value (28 dollars/day, accommodation only). They are located right on the beach and they make up for very peaceful and restful nights thanks to the hypnotic sound of the ocean. The huts are equipped simply: just a bed, a table, a fan and mosquito net. There is electricity in the huts. Communal showers and toilets are cleaned at regular intervals and they were ok during my stay. Security staff was constantly patrolling the huts enclosure, so I felt safe. Besides this, safety boxes are available at the reception for free (but make sure you bring a padlock along or you will have to buy one from the hotel as an alternative). I never tried the raised huts at the back.
Mosquitos were not so much of a problem, but I always use repellent and I do carry spray as well as mosquito coils.
Beach is well kept and reasonably clean by African standards (it could easily be cleaner by European standards, of course… However, for sure beach here is much better than in many places in overrated Zanzibar). The beach is open to locals and day visitors which is something I personally quite like ( I do hate the exclusive foreign resort atmosphere…).
Food is generally good, albeit a bit expensive by Tanzanian standards (calculate some 15 euros for a main course + drink). Laid back and relaxing atmosphere around the bar, restaurant and common areas thanks also the welcoming staff. Service is adequate.
I followed Janika1989’s suggestion and tried Ms Lemi’s restaurant out. The place is located on the left hand side of the dirt road leading to the village: the place is basic and serves tasty and fresh Swahili food at Swahili prices, the Swahili way (= absolutely no frills). Ms Lemi will do anything to accommodate your wishes if you tell her in advance. If possible, let her know what time you plan to turn up for food and she will have it ready for you at the appointed time… (this is especially useful if you are the impatient type and you wish to cut down on waiting times, as the word with her is POLE POLE as with most Africans…).
All in all, it is a fine place and very good value for money. I will doubtlessly go back

The bandas as shown in the photo are about 300 meters from the beach in an area cut out of the forest. Rooms are sparse and very basic. Verandas look out at nothing. Restaurant and bar is adequate, but service is poor. Ordered prawns for lunch. 20 minutes later when I thought my lunch was being served, the waitress informed me that the kitchen was out of prawns since the night before! Beach is decent but don't expect the pristine white sand beaches or crystal clear waters of Zanzibar. Very convenient location from Dar...just 7km after taking the ferry. Overall, a decent stay but the room feels overpriced for the amentities (or lack thereof)

We stayed at Kipepeo Beach Village Hotel for one night during April 2014. Their huts are quite good, unique and nicely decorated in Swahili traditional style. The huts are about 200 metres from the beach area. The huts are like this, down is bathroom only, and if you climb stairs then you can reach your bedroom and there is a big balcony also. Do not expect much furnishings in your room, there is no air conditioner, no fan, no tv, no safe, no coffee maker ... but I still suggest everyone to try this hotel atleast once for a different experience. Only one serious problem which really bothered us is that, after sunset there are plenty of mosquitoes, it's better to carry anti-mosquito spray when going there. Their food was quite delicious.

Average campsite. Upgrades for twin beds look nice from the outside but lots of bed bugs and holes in the mosquito nets.
Toilets are ok showers are good.
Nice view of the beach and good area to swim.
Nice and well stocked bar. Good stop over place of Zanzibar.

Came here as a group of 11 at the end of a month long trip in Moshi, Dar and Arusha. The service wasn't good; very slow waiting on/bar staff and quite the stroppy manager. But then again, everywhere we went in Tanzania it was as though time was never an issue and the slow pace was reflected everywhere. The white beach and clear blue sea was impeccable, with very few other occupants other than the sellers who go away quickly if you don't want anything. An expensive watch of mine was taken from the table as we were having the plates cleared and all staff denied any knowledge; it was my own fault for leaving it there. Stayed in a 2 bed cabin - lovely and on the beach. Bugs are an issue as you can imagine but mosquito nets are provided (albeit with rips)

This is a very basic, but pleasant place on the beach. I was camping myself, and they do have fine camping grounds. Only stayed one night and the facilities, i.e. shared toilets and showers, were good. the grounds around the bar, restaurant and beach are also nice. The people who stayed in the chalets were very happy with their rooms and thought they were quite beautiful and smart, using the ocean-breeze as a natural aircon. The beach is nice, lots of waves. There's wifi, but limited. They do warn you about "thugs" on the beach, so you should be careful with your valuables. The camping grounds had armed guards.
