Years ago, a couple I met in Tanga told me that their favourite hotel in Daresalaam was the Mediterraneo. It took me all this time to go and try it out! The main problem was the distance from town coupled with the horrible Dar traffic. But, with Uber on the scene now, staying out of town makes so much sense, as long as one can avoid travelling during the rush hours.
From the moment we walked into the lush green gardens of the hotel, I felt happy and knew that I had found my home in Dar. I was born and grew up in Kenya and we always went to the coast for the holidays. After all this time, I finally found a hotel on the coast near Dar that gives me the same feeling as hotels on the Kenya coast.
It's right on the seafront/beach. The high tide comes almost up to the restaurant building. There are some lovely, comfortable chairs right by the seafront and one can just sit there for hours looking at the dhows in the distance and the people coming and going on the beach. Infact, we almost spent our whole Sunday relaxing, taking photos from our little corner and swimming in the pool.
Ordered pizza for lunch which was delicious.
The whole feeling is laid back, as it should be on the coast.
Although our room was right at the back, it was still lovely as there are so many flowers and trees everywhere.
I, personally, loved the simple, fresh decor of the rooms. Bed was comfortable and everything was clean,
The staff was very friendly and helpful. Infact, although our booking was non changeable and non refundable, when we delayed our arrival by a few days due to medical reasons, they let us change dates without any fee.
We stayed there mid February and we are already going back next week for a few more days.
Only problem we had was one Sunday morning at breakfast when some of the guests were extremely noisy. But that was only on that one morning.
Otherwise, Mediterraneo is a small paradise and definitely worth a stay if you are in this part of the world.

Room tip: 'Sea view rooms are better than rooms at the back'

A friend had booked a table for 16 people to celebrate a birthday. 1 waiter serving. Food took 90 minutes to arrive. Some dishes arrived without the accompanying chips / vegetables. Most diners [not all] found their food to be unpalatable. Every dish that did arrive arrived luke warm only. ! pizza was like soggy cardboard but took an hour and half to make ???] people that ordered steak found it so tough it was inedible, they and 2 others left to dine at the local bar across the road.. One diner ordered pasta for main mail and received a starter sized serving. Another one that ordered fish could only eat a tiny bit because it was not fresh. Her chips did not arrive either. We asked to see the Manager who refused to show up. On second request he appeared after a 15 minute wait by which time the bill had already arrived. It was explained to him that several dishes were untouched and returned, some diners only received parts of their orders, when politely asked what he intended to do to make amends he offered a free citronella liquor each but still expected us to pay in full for food that was not actually served or was served but returned due to inedibility. When asked to think again he returned after a further fifteen minutes with a derisory offer of a small reduction to the bill which did not even add up to the value of the returned food. When this offer was rejected he went away again and eventually, after another 15 minutes his boss, the putative hotel owner, arrived. By this time, having given them ample opportunity to at least have the chance of not totally alienating their customers we decided that we would calculate the cost of the food that was actually delivered to the table and consumed including the food that could only be partially consumed but was touched, rather than pay for food that was not delivered to table and food that was not consumed. We re-expressed our complaint to the owner who made no further gesture of recompense, despite also being politely given the opportunity and he merely, grudgingly accepted our offer of only paying for the food that was delivered and edible - as if he was doing us a favor by allowing us not to pay for something we did not get. No apology, no redress. In short, awful food, terrible service and appalling attitude that obviously stems from a greedy owner who has no concept of customer retention. Don't go there to eat !

A friend indicated me the Mediterraneo Hotel. Being the first time in Tanzania and Dar, I did not know exactly what was expecting me. It exceeded my expectations and was an amazing 9 days stay. The rooms are in excellent condition, the pool is amazing and the entire plant with much nature around contributes to a relaxing atmosphere. Although it was a business trip, it felt like holidays as soon as I arrived at the hotel. The restaurant's local food and fish dishes are highly recommended. Staff is really friendly. I already indicated it to another friend, who also loved it.

We needed a few days to rest up from a long journey and we found this gem. Fabulous views (ocean), very safe, good rooms and friendly staff who took excellent care of us. The restaurant on the property was quite good with fantastic service. They made us feel like we had just entered the beginning of a memorable trip with their introduction to the wonderful country of Tanzania

We recently spent 2 nights here as a stopover. Our first and lasting impression is the exceptional staff at Mediterraneo, especially the highly efficient reception ladies who dealt with our lost luggage issue with charm and patience. A quaint, unpretentious and quiet hotel right on the beach with a laid back restaurant/bar and pool area that overlooks the ocean. The semi-detached rooms are set back from the beach in a tropical garden and everything is clean and well-maintained. We liked that the rooms each have their own little verandah and offer basic essentials including fast WiFi and aircon. The sea was not particularly clean or calm and there was massive tidal variation but we enjoyed the views and the food was excellent. Their nightime only restaurant ZanzyDar offers Swahili inspired tastes which was a lovely variation. Would have liked to have had an option for a continental breakfast instead of the enormous buffet.
