Kunduchi Beach Hotel and Resort
Ranked #17 of 97 Hotels in Dar es Salaam
Reviewed January 10, 2010

Stayed here for the last 3 nights of our trip after returning from safari.
Extremely helpful staff
Maintenance needs to get its act together. Air conditioning leaks, cold tap was actually the hot tap and vice versa, Boat used to transport us to the island nearby was letting in enough water to worry us faint hearted 'westerners'
Food was plentiful and wide choice of dishes
Beach excellent for swimming

Too late, we have read the reviews here. Living in dar and came here in November for a 3 day weekend get away. The site is great, walks on the beach. the renovated lobby and open area bar outside has some charm. The buffet lunches organized for conferences are substantial and good enough (nothing special though). However the service was chaotic and although freindly, awful. Returned last weekend thinking maybe they just had an off moment. the service was worse. No concept in the restaurant for a la carte. menus dont come, food came all at once (starters and main) after a long, long wait, desserts never came at all after asking 3 times. Bar wasnt better, warm drinks, dirty and broken glasses, waiter didn't bring change, ice was promised but never appeared, lunch snack took nearly an hour to arrive and wasnt worth the wait. Don't go there until they change the management (food and beverage) and until the wait staff have some serious professional training. The rooms were ok but lacking features as noted in other reviews.

We attended a conference in this hotel. I should admit that i was totally impressed, the way the property is built, great looks, stunning location. the view from the hotel lobby and your room is just incredible. the lobby has high ceiling, huge windows (resembles roman windows) on the patio gives incredible views of the ocean. The furniture in the lobby is grand, looks palatial. But it has lost its charm due to over usage/ lack of upkeep. but your impression will not last for long the moment you start experiencing the hotel. check in process was not smooth. Since we were a part of the group, had to wait for long to get our room allotted. Hotel could have planned better. there were no porters to help us with the luggage. no issues... we are strong enough to carry our own bags.. we were given a room on the first floor. No elevators. No porters. good rooms. Airconditioned (there was no remote) nicely done up rooms. Four poster beds with mosquito nets. Comfortable mattresses. but the details were missing. the bedside lamp looked nice but rusted and not functional. Very poor fittings. They have painted gold color on some iron metal piece. bathroom was good. they have a seperate wc area, but unfortunately the locks did not work. the balcony facing the ocean is good. but the chair was not suitable for sitting and tons of bird dropping. it was a rusted iron piece (so called balcony chair) placed on the balcony. the bedsheets, bathtowels were of good quality. but there was no hot water in the shower all the days we stayed. you just have cold water for shower. the reception promised that this will be rectified. but till the day we checked out, nothing happened. so the nett result; all the days we had a terrible cold shower. The hotel had promised us wifi connection in our room. But this was not available. When checked, the staff admitted that such service were never available in the hotel. Then why lied to us while taking our booking ?
breakfast was average. nothing great. restaurant services are mediocre. seems they have a shortage of staff and one of them commended this to us too. The view from the restaurant was great. They have huge sliding windows facing the ocean. but kept closed. It could have been better if the windows are kept open. Atleast you get some good sea breeze. conference room was good. but over designed. jarring. Some lights did not work. carpets are old and dirty. sound system may not work in the middle of a presentation. the conference personnel were very helpful. they were very apologetic for the mishaps. is there any use ? we pay for the services and in return we get a sincere sorry from the poor staff. The coffee break snacks were below average. Tea was served cold. lunch was not good. food was to local taste. we did not enjoy. we did suggest some changes on our food requirement to the manager, but nothing happened.
the evening walk on the beach is simply great. it would become even a greater beach provided the hotel cleans the beach on a regular basis. for dinner we decided to venture out. someone suggested the near by whitesands hotel. food is poor there too. we got some awesome meals in the kempinski hotel in the city. atleast we got some homely food. but very expensive. never mind. we were happy with the food.
The hotel has a lovely garden area. But somehow not kept well. If the grasses are pruned it would have looked great.
during the evening, the hotel is a boring place.does not have any activities. since we thought it is a resort location, there may be some night activities, club etc.. these are not available in this hotel. there are some local kiosks near the hotel apart from other hotels which is some 10 minutes drive away. but the local kiosks are not safe and the hotels nearby are just mediocre in terms of the food they serve. if you want some good food you hire a taxi and go to the downtown where there is a host of excellent restaurants with simply great food.
foreign exchange in this hotel was a real problem. we wanted to change some euros and the hotel rates were aweful. i understand hotels keep a margin. but here margins are more than double. one interesting thing is that the exchange rate changes from people to people at the reception. in one day we got 3 different rates from 3 different people from the reception. anyway, we did not change our currency. we got it changed from a local exchange bureau in the downtown.
message delivery was very poor. we had 3 urgent messages and none was delivered to us. these were very important and crucial messages.
porters were available while we checked out. So carrying our bags down to the lobby was easy.
we will never return to this hotel. it is just the building and noting more to it.
i am sorry to say this.

The staff is extremely friendly (especially bartenders and waiters). The hotel and rooms were clean although the bed was a little stiff. All rooms have AC and mosquito nets. Nice view of the ocean from your window.

Water was lukewarm and the food was just ok.

I stayed at this hotel in conjunction with a large conference. It has great potential, being situated on a wonderful beach, but there were numerous deficiencies. It is quite isolated, being nearly an hour's drive from Dar given really bad traffic in this city. Armed guards warn you against walking on the beach, so you are pretty much captive at the hotel, which only had one restaurant. The rooms were large, but did not match the description on the hotel's web site--internet access was not available in the rooms (only lobby and the access was spotty), there was no robe or coffee making facility in the room, my hairdryer was falling off the wall, there was no safety lock on the door, metal chairs on deck had no cushions so they would not be a place you would want to sit, etc. Numerous people attending the conference had problems with room reservations. Two women arrived at 2 am and had to wait 2 hours, and then were taken to a villa (which was really dumpy and dirty and had no water) and left there in the total dark with a key that didn't work. The one positive was that the service people were friendly, although relatively incompetent. I would not recommend this as a place to stay unless you had no other options.

We had a pretty bad experience in this hotel and had to check out and check in to the near by Whitesands hotel which is far superior in terms of product quality and service excellence.

We had problems from the time we checked in to this place. Slow Check in, No foreign exchange, Porters demanding money, No telephone voucher cards, Security Guards - Totally Unprofessional and dont even understand a word in English, Total confused people behind the reception, No hot water in the room, Poor TV Quality, Room Service Pathetic, We were over charged by the Room Service waiter who refised to produce the bill, Poor quality of Maintenance, The Corridor floors look pathetic with a century old tiles which werer totally not kept well, Filthy Pool (Its better the hotel never had one), Horrible Gym, Pathetic Restaurant Service, Average Food, Waiters do not UNDERSTAND english, You will be OVER CHARGED by the waiters if you are not careful, We assure you that YOU WILL NEVER BE SATISFIED IN THIS RESTAURANT. We wonder whether this hotel has some managers around. We never saw any!!!!!!!! It was not the case that all the managers were busy attending other guests, as the HOTEL WERE VERY VERY EMPTY.

Please do not believe what they have wriiten in their website as most of the facilities what they brag about is TOTALLY NOT AVAILABLE.

We shall never STEP INTO THIS HOTEL AGAIN. WHITESANDS HOTEL IS VERY VERY SUPERIOR COMPARED TO THIS HOTEL. We went to this hotel after being referred to us by one of my peers who stayed in this hotel last Jan. Unfortunately the names of people whom we had as a reference are NO MORE WORKING IN THIS HOTEL.

Our company global conference was held at Kunduchi during October 08. The location is out of this world, with white sands, clear waters, and great weather at this time of year.

Maintenance and renovations were being carried out on the buildings and suites, and the senior management comprising General Manager Ronald, and his team were implementing a number of changes in staff training and work practices that can only add to the benefits to be enjoyed by guests.

The conference was voted a great success by group delegates, the catering and beach side candlelit dinners and local floor shows during our group dinners will remain in our memories for years to come.

Overall a great time had by all, and we will return
