My wife and I had to spend a day in Dar before flying out to Arusha to begin our honeymoon safari. We found the Kempinski online through AMEX, and had no real expectations, other than that the place would be acceptable for a 24-hour stay. Well, boy, were we in for a surprise--the Kempinski had a wonderful spa, a fantastic pool, and a really good restaurant (the finest sushi in Dar). Add to that the spacious rooms, free wi-fi, and great service, and we had a very nice stay.

This was my second stay at the property, and I must say that the hotel is very well managed and kept. The rooms are very nice and definitely appeal to modern, European taste. You don't see much African decorations in this hotel, which I don't mind.

I had a room on the sea side with a nice view to the pool and the sea. The room was spacious and the bed large. One of the bath room wall is glass, so you will have daylight in the bathroom, too. For those travelling with colleagues there are blinds to secure privacy.

The restaurant serves decent food, and although I'm not a buffet fan, I always eat the lunch or dinner buffet at least once during my stay. It offers a good selection of local dishes, some of which are Indian influenced.

The Zanzi Bar next to the lobby is OK, however the real experience is Level 8 at the top floor. Just remember to look out for mosquitoes and wear some repellent. But, once you are adequately equipped, you can enjoy a spectacular view to the sea and the international atmosphere.

The staff at the hotel is efficient and friendly, however not overwhelming. They know the “Kili” is numero uno in Dar, and as such there is little incentive to go the extra mile.

All this luxury of course comes with a price tag. It is a close call if it is worth it or not. I probably would not spend my own money to be pampered here, but with a corporate deal and money, it certainly is bearable.

We stayed here after 7 days in small hotels and guesthouses in Zanzibar, for a bit of luxury on our final night. We weren't disappointed - loved every bit of this hotel and thought it was excellent value.

Get a harbour view room if you can- they kindly gave us one even though we booked and paid for a city view. The rooms (especially the bathrooms!) are gorgeous, the pool area is stunning and the service great. We had drinks in the level 8 bar in the evening with an amazing view of the harbour. The chinese restaurant food is really good (about the same as a good chinese in London - which is hard to find!). The breakfast buffet was one of the best I've seen. If you're used to staying in 5* hotels you'll find nothing new here - but it is a perfect refuge from the dust of Dar.

The Kempinski has to be easily the best hotel in Dar Es Salaam. Wonderful cool, and modern room with great glass bathroom featuring stand alone showers and big bathtubs. There are full sized windows along one wall, and hard wood floors keeping the rooms nice and cool in the tropical weather of Tanzania.
The pool is a fantastic time to spend a few hours overlooking the harbor. The bar on level 9 is actually very appealing, with big glass windows overlooking the water, and great free snacks with your drinks.
The hotel is located very close to the boat dock for ferries to Zanzibar. Only a 5 minute walk at the most.
The breakfast at the hotel restaurant is very good, but the dinner buffet is very average. A better choice for dinner in the hotel is actually the Asian restaurant on the second floor.
You will pay through the nose booking a car through the hotel. If possible organise it with your travel agent in advance, or if you are leaving just get one of the doormen to get the cab for you and pay the driver directly.

Wonderful hotel - spent the last night of our honeymoon here before flying out. Level 8 bar and the Oriental restaurant in particular are a must even if you don't stay in the hotel.
