A chance to see exotic birds and wild beasts up close rather than flitting by on a safari. I was pleasantly surprised! I went with work colleagues on a weekday and we had the place to ourselves. The animals seem to be well treated and fed. It's a large leafy grounds where you walk around on sand paths and the animals have plenty of space. You can cuddle the boa if you're so inclined.
The zoo is on the Kigamboni side of town, quite far from the Kilwa road. It's signposted from the Mjimwema junction and from there it's another 20 minutes' drive. There's a cafe at the entrance although it looked like they'd not necessarily have food if they weren't expecting visitors.
It makes a nice stopover on the way to south Kigamboni beaches and I expect children would be thrilled.
