Owner description: This natural history museum exhibits numerous bones and other fossilized remains, including a cast of one family’s footprint trail left in volcanic ash over 3.5 million years ago.

The museum itself was fairly expensive at 20,000 shillings and although there was a great deal of interesting information about the founding of Tanzania, the museum itself was poorly maintained and fairly disappointing. There were good parts such as the artwork and some of the ancient pieces; but the pieces were poorly maintained and as a historian it would have been nice to see some preservation work.

The entrance fee was 6500 Tsh ($4) was reasonable for what was on display. I expected more from a National Museum whose's grounds are adjoining the Presidential palace. A lovely are art gallery and a rock art gallery were the highlights. The primary exhibit upstairs was a poster board display of the history of man. Very few artifacts. Then a poster board display about the the history of Tanzania, interesting facts acquired. One lovely outer building had revolving exhibit. Lots of artifacts here.
Nothing on the natural resources of the country and very little on the tribal cultures.
What I loved the most was the Ebony sculptures...aweson

Cost too much and nothing to see. There were many pictures of slavers, explorers, and a few artifacts, but nothing of import. A very nice tree in the courtyard was the most spectacular display.

As my own tradition, I start at a city's museum to understand the city and identify where I need to go and explore. This one was a let down. Something needs to be done there.

If you have some time to spare it's a good place to go, but don't have high expectations.
The exhibits are not great, the layout is confusing, the roof leaks, sign posting is not done properly, ... but still let's hope that the entrance fee is being put to a good use.
