I stayed at the Moevenpick in Dar after a couple of weeks of safari and Kilimanjaro climbing in northern Tanzania. It was nice to have some luxury, and the hotel was surely nice. Lovely garden and a nice pool area. It feels good to have some relaxation inside such a chaotic city as Dar.
The room was quite nice, the size was fine and the bathroom good. It would have been nice to have a balcony, though, and windows are sealed, so the only fresh air you get is from the air con.
The restaurants are for the most part ok. The breakfast is truly nice, and compares easily to European standards. The various buffets that the main restaurant (forgot its name) has, are good, but somewhat pricy. The italian restaurant at the hotel, however, was a huge disappointment. The pizzas were strange, as if the dough was intended for cakes rather than pizzas, and they also tasted strange. I had stomach issues approximately 12 hours later, so I reckon there was definately something wrong with those pizzas.
In the reception, staff was not really helpful, unfortunately. Many of them was not really proactive and forthcoming and in many cases had trouble communicating properly in English, which came as a surprise to us at a hotel this standard. On checkout, we wanted to pay with credit card, but had to give up paying by Diners Club and AMEX as the hotel wanted those cardsconfirmed by phone in Nairobi, and apparently the Nairobi-gius decided not to pick up their phones. We were glad we brought a third choice - a VISA card, which eventually did not require phone confirmation, but we really considered this disappointing of a hotel this standard.
Overall, the hotel is quite nice, but relatively expensive (also the food), and the service level could definately be better. However, would still recommend the hotel for somebody looking for a bit of western standard in Tanzania, which is generally pretty rare.
