“Nice, but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2009

I stayed at the Moevenpick in Dar after a couple of weeks of safari and Kilimanjaro climbing in northern Tanzania. It was nice to have some luxury, and the hotel was surely nice. Lovely garden and a nice pool area. It feels good to have some relaxation inside such a chaotic city as Dar.

The room was quite nice, the size was fine and the bathroom good. It would have been nice to have a balcony, though, and windows are sealed, so the only fresh air you get is from the air con.

The restaurants are for the most part ok. The breakfast is truly nice, and compares easily to European standards. The various buffets that the main restaurant (forgot its name) has, are good, but somewhat pricy. The italian restaurant at the hotel, however, was a huge disappointment. The pizzas were strange, as if the dough was intended for cakes rather than pizzas, and they also tasted strange. I had stomach issues approximately 12 hours later, so I reckon there was definately something wrong with those pizzas.

In the reception, staff was not really helpful, unfortunately. Many of them was not really proactive and forthcoming and in many cases had trouble communicating properly in English, which came as a surprise to us at a hotel this standard. On checkout, we wanted to pay with credit card, but had to give up paying by Diners Club and AMEX as the hotel wanted those cardsconfirmed by phone in Nairobi, and apparently the Nairobi-gius decided not to pick up their phones. We were glad we brought a third choice - a VISA card, which eventually did not require phone confirmation, but we really considered this disappointing of a hotel this standard.

Overall, the hotel is quite nice, but relatively expensive (also the food), and the service level could definately be better. However, would still recommend the hotel for somebody looking for a bit of western standard in Tanzania, which is generally pretty rare.

One of the few large hotels in Dar. It has all basic ammenities. Food choice is limited but good. The hotel has a nice pool and fitness center. The rooms are well equiped with modern faciliites.

Descent hotel with descent ambience and aminities. I will not recommend this plaace to anyone. I had a morning 5 am international flight to catch and the reception missed my morning alarm with a convenient "Sorry". I almost missed my flight. Not expected fthis rom a 4* hotel reception.

Perfect for our needs, one night stay before flying early the following morning. Lovely staff, clean rooms, coffee place on the ground floor particularly nice. Very efficient and unusually for a large city centre hotel has character. If i was ever in Dar again i'd stay here.

I stayed at the Moevenpick Royal Palm Hotel in Dar in November 2008 and found it to be a very good and comfortable hotel and would certainly recommend it to others.

The outside looks a bit tired, but once inside it is spacious, clean and relaxing. There is a great little cafe in the hotel with sandwiches, cakes etc. Great bar with live entertainment every evening. Also, fantastic pool area, plenty of sun lounges. The gym looked very modern and well equipped.

The rooms are spacious and beds are really comfortable. A great little thing I found in the room was that they had electrical outlets for all countries (so you can charge up your mobile phones, laptops, iPods etc without having a particular adaptor)!

I was lucky enough to have access to the Lounge on the Executive Floor (7th). You can help yourself to drinks & nibblies from the lounge. There is also access to computers & the internet here, although the connection is a bit slow.

I had a couple of days in Dar on my own just before I flew back to Australia and walked around Dar on my own without too much hassle, I also went to Zanzibar for the day - a great day out! I did not venture out in the evenings and one night had a meal at the Italian restaurant in the hotel, which was nice, but a little bit expensive. There is a "Subway" across the street from the hotel, great for a quick & cheap lunch.

I would definitely stay here here again.

  • Liked — good standard, great views over the golf course
  • Disliked — slow check-ing, a little bit expensive

When you drive up to this hotel, it sticks out amongst the lowly buildings and empty space around it. It appears a little dull on the outside, but the inside is much more interesting. The lobby is a large open space, with plenty of couches to sit and relax. A few shops with ridiculous prices are also found close to the lobby. More importantly, the lobby area and reception are well maintained and clean.

The rooms are generous, with equally generous bathrooms. Modern furnishings in the room with in-room safe, ample wardrobe and desk space. Practically everything you would need. Internet is via the cable at the desk, provided at a reasonable price too.

The hotel has some great facilities, such as a great pool area, fully equipped gym, massage parlours, bars and a couple of restaurants.

The hotel is also located close to local eateries as well. So you won't have to always get stuck with paying hotel prices for your meals or drinks. A supermarket is also within walking distance and a bank is directly across the road. Walking around the area is relatively safe, if done during the day. It's also easy to get a taxi at the hotel to get to where you need to go.

Overall, a decent effort for a 4 star hotel.

  • Liked — Clean and well maintained throughout
  • Disliked — Nothing comes to mind

Spend, early Nov 08, 5 nights in the Mövenpick Royal Palm hotel.
This is an abolutely decent hotel.
You get more or less a good Western standard hotel in Africa - which isn't bad at all !
Room was spacious and clean with everything working perfectly well. Bathroom was spacious and clean with everything working perfectly well.
Reception staff was a bit slow but all went fine on check in (with intennet prepaid booking) and check out.
Bell boy was great and very helpfull.
Cleaning staff was very friendly and attentive.
Restaurants : breakfast buffet is absolutely adequate with a wide variety of foodstuffs.
The Italian restaurant on site is very decent, although a bit pricy. The hotel bar is great as is the bar staff.
Wednesday evening it's lobster eve - fantastic choice and very good food !
Taxi's on the premises are expensive. Just across the street (behind Barclays bank) there's a "public" taxi stand with really very democratic prices and with reliable taxi's.
Swimming pool area is, although small, very pretty. Not crowded at all - with decent lunch and dinner possibilities in the swimming pool area.

We had a pleasant stay at the Mövenpick Royal Palm!
When going back to DAR, we'll stay at the Mövenpick again !

  • Liked — Basically everything.
  • Disliked — Reception staff being a bit slow.
