“Dull, Boring and Expensive for Dar”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

From the moment you arrive at the entrance, you are met with glum faced dis-interested staff. At the lacklustre reception, it is no better either with the girls not showing much sparkle to greet new guests. The grim faces simply convey the message that the staff do not have much passion in their jobs.
Inside, I didn’t see much ambience – it’s simply dull and needs a complete revamp of décor and staff. We ordered room service for our evening meals. Unless your company bears all the costs, food is mighty expensive for a private tourist and is of average quality. For instance, the Indian menu (prepared by non-Indian chef) says a number of things included for certain dishes but they don’t serve you naan or chapatti. Instead you get a lousy tough, brittle and oil drenched pieces of flat bread in white flour which does not suit most people. The boiled rice unfortunately came with a teeth- breaking piece of stone fragment – enough to put you off from eating rice for ever.
Sorry it was a bad experience for the price one has to pay staying at the Serena. Either avoid going to Dar es Salam or better still, stay with friends if you have any and save $250 a night.

I was not a guest at the Serena, but had the opportunity to have lunch at the 24 hour Brasserie on two consecutive days. It is a popular spot for lunch, by locals and guests of the hotel. Food was excellent with more than sufficient variety. Service was very good and staff were attentive despite the large numbers. An excellent restaurant for a business lunch.

I spent 2 nights in this hotel. Rooms are comfortable; good selection of TV channels and movies. Brazilian band at the outside bar was very noisy and not that good. Ask for a room facing the road rather than the bar. Food at a la carte restaurant is excellent - especially the seafood.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the road rather than the deck which has live music most nights

I have been using this hotel for about 5 years now for business and it is absolutely perfect. It used to be a Moevenpick but has now been taken over by Serena. I believe they are going to do a massive refurbishment which will be nice but it is still a great hotel as it is. The location is perfect, the rooms are huge with plenty of working space and the bathrooms all have baths which is often not the case in dar hotels.

The staff are very friendly and accommodating and their business lunches are fab. They are a little on the pricy side but that is starting to become the norm in Dar. The pool area is lovely and away from the main public areas so you do have some privacy.

The breakfast is quite nice and varied although it can take some time to get your tea/coffee.

I would always choose this hotel first and foremost for business in Dar city centre but I am a little sad to see their prices being hiked up because they are a Serena.

Been to Dar before though on holiday [great experience].This time, was in Dar on a 2-day business trip so only got to stay @ Serena for 1 night.

RAVES ;
- Very convenient location.
- Breakfast ; very tasty with a wide variety. Love the Serena Hotels for this.
- Decent rooms. Ok for a business traveler. Nothing fancy.

RANTS;
- Poor & slow service both at check in and check out.
Had made earlier reservations yet they checked me into a twin-bed room [!!!]. Adamantly refused the room and it took more than 1hr for them to given me a single-bed room.
My check out bill was erroneous & it also took quite a while for it to be amended. [At one point they mentioned i should pay the correct amount though they would not be able to print me a correct receipt. I insisted and it took quite sometime to get the correct receipt].

- Poor & slow service at Serengeti Restaurant.
Hostess did not seem to know which buffet cuisine was being offered. When i asked for an a la carte restaurant option, she also didnt seem aware [got to know next-day that there's Jahazi Restaurant]. Opted to go into Dar city to have dinner in an Indian Restaurant with a friend.

Breakfast waitress's service was too slow ; had to keep reminding her of my earlier requests, table took too long to clear.

NB ;
- Besides their breakfasts, really love the Serena brand for the 'Maisha Spa'.
Given that this hotel was recently re-branded from Moevenpick Royal Palm Hotel, was informed that Maisha is still under renovation. Hope it doesn't dissapoint.

- I've heard rave reviews of the sea-facing 'Sea Cliff' hotel so you might also want to check it out.
