“5 mins away from ferry to Zanzibar!”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

I felt like this place was like an airport hotel, there really is NOTHING else around it. BUT, if you are only spending a night there to get the ferry to Zanzibar or airport its a perfect place!
Ferry - 5 min walk
Airport 20-30 drive $50
The hotel has a pretty funky bar and decent restaurant so there really is NO need to venture of hotel property. The pool was great, especially after a crazy hot day traveling by ferry from Zanzibar.
The rooms were clean & safe (second door to swipe your key through prior to getting to your room), but the A/C wasnt very powerful.
In regards to the ferry, I would suggest going to the ferry terminal as early as possible to get your tickets.( Idealy the day before) There are SO many locals trying to "wheel and deal you" that you dont want to be dealing with that on a limited time limit. We tried to book our tickets online, and when we went to find the kiosk, they told us that boat didnt operate anymore. Im sure it was still operating we just couldnt find the right ticket stand, and NO one wanted to be helpful when they heard it was prebooked. First class tickets are also nice as you have the option for A/C on the ferry.
Bring your passports as well, you need them to buy your tickets, as well as need them to go through customes in Zanzibar, even though they are both in Tanzania you need to get it stamped.

Dear Tripadvisor member,

Thank you for posting a review of your stay with us.

Glad to note that your stay was comfortable and that the hotel was very convenient for your ferry trip to Zanzibar. We are the closest hotel to the ferry and its a very comfortable short walk to catch the boat. Glad you enjoyed the pool as well as the new Onyx lounge bar. Sorry to hear that the AC in your room was not cooling as well as you had expected it to. We shall have the unit serviced and tested. Apologies for this.

Looking forward to hosting your next stay when in Dar.

This was my second stay at this hotel. First was over 18 months ago. This time had a superb night's sleep before flying to Arusha. Had room on 6th floor over looking pool. Room very clean and quiet. Water pressure for shower not what I like but passable. Check in and out smooth and no problem. I recommend for business as its well located and good for overnight stays too. Sadly didn't get to eat at the restaurant as was very tired from long journey. Very secure and safe place to stay.

This was my third stay at Hotel New Africa. The rooms are good and spacious and the staff is very friendly. Its located right next to the ferry terminal so it gives you good access if you want to go visit Zanzibar. There are lot of banks and currency exchange centres close by as well. However this time they were renovating hence there were minor incovenences and little noise. I highly recommend New Africa once the renovation is complete :)

Stayed 2 nights either side of heading to Zanzibar, functional hotel with clean rooms that belie the dingy hall ways.. 5 minute walk to the Zanzibar ferry so ideal location, staff friendly and helpful, wifi was average. Restaurant has some quality dishes.

I stayed at the hotel on my recent business trip to Dar es Salaam. The hotel itself is nothing really remarkable, and the location is not picture-perfect. It's convenient for business travel as it is in the cbd. However some things are worth pointing out.
On the positive side I was glad to find a reasonably well appointed gym. The outdoor swimming pool was also very inviting- clean and warm. However, corporate cocktail parties were held around the pool most evenings, which made a swim less appealing. The hotel has got 2 pleasant restaurants and an inviting bar.
On the downside, the food portions of the a la carte menu are very slim while the prices are not. But what bothered me the most is the constant smell of damp everywhere- in the rooms, the elevator, and even the bed linen. I don't think the hotel could have done much about it - Dar es Salaam is a very hot and humid place. However it eventually got too much to bear.
But even with all that I'll gladly go back and stay there again as the staff is exceptionally friendly, which is a real treat to a lonely business traveller. Apart from the damp smell, the room and the hotel itself were very clean. And there is effort with the decor and ambience.
But remember you are visiting hot, humid Africa.

Dear Tripadvisor member,

Thank you for posting such a lovely review of the hotel.

I am glad that the hotel met your approval in most respects. Its nice to know that you enjoyed the central location of the hotel. Its ideal for business within the city. Thank you for appreciating the overall service as well as the quality of food and beverage in the restaurants. I shall share your feedback with the team. I do apologize for the damp smell in your guest corridor. Yes Dar is a very humid city and this is the hottest time of the year. However that is not really an excuse for there to be a damp smell. We have initiated a thorough check in the corridor ventilation system and will have this rectified. Hopefully you will not let this mar your impression of the hotel.

Glad to note that you will come back again. Looking forward to hosting your next stay at the hotel.

I spent nine (9) nights at the New Africa Hotel in Dar Es Salaam and would like to share the pros and the cons. The Hotel is ideally located for the business traveller as government and other offices are in walking distance. The front office manager was exceptional and made sure that I was picked up from the airport at midnight which was not my original arrival time. The staff were most courteous and the harbour view from my window was worth the extra 50 or so dollars. However I do have some concerns to share. Firstly, for the room price I had high expectations but was disappointed with the quality of the rooms. My room was poorly ventilated and had the kind of odour you get from an old carpet. I soon however got used to the odour. The worst part of my stay at the New Africa hotel was that the food was not well prepared. The first two days of breakfast were fine but there after the monotonous breakfast menu got to me. In short nothing tasted the way it was supposed to including the bacon and eggs. Overall I rate it an average hotel.

Dear Tripadvisor member,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of the hotel. I am glad that the hotel was overall satisfactory and that you had a good stay. Extended visits on business can be quite ardous and a warm and welcoming hotel usually makes things a bit bearable. I am glad that the front desk team took such good care of you. We do pride ourselves on the service front and am glad that this came through during your visit. Apologies that the breakfast was not up to your expectations. I have shared the same with the chef and his team and they are taking steps to add more variety. Needless to say we shall take special care of your orders upon your next visit.

Hope you return to the hotel in the near future.
